To me, this episode was kind of all over the place. There were random events that, to the best of my knowledge, had no precedent, and that was kind of a turn off. Correct me if I'm wrong.

I think I enjoyed this episode a bit more than the last one. I can see how the relationship between Haru and Minato mirrors Rikuo and Shinako, but other than that, nothing really happened.

My main concern is that, for the moment, Shinako and Rou don't really seem to have a purpose in the narrative. Shinako rejected Rikuo early and since then has really just been the love sponge for Rou, who we're meant to think is part of a love triangle with Rikuo and Haru, but they're barely shared any screen time together so far, so the illusion just doesn't land. Basically, there's no way I can see thing going other than Rikuo ending up with Haru so I'm just kinda sitting here like, "okay. I know what's gonna happen. Just get on with it already."

I think I'll give it one more episode. If it hasn't grabbed me by then, I'll just drop it there, making Minare Koda my seasonal waifu by default.

Wont correct you cause I think the same.
The randomness of this episode was a lil bit too much. I had quite high expectations for this one, seems like I've put the bar too high..

Also this stupid clinging stuff is kinda too melodramatic to be real. Shinako saying she stops going in circles when it is clear, that she doesnt.. And haru.. well for me she changes more into a lil brat the more i watch it. This permanent pressure of the scenes to make people feel down feels like a bummer for me. Can't really espress it though.. It seems just like they want to use every but of drama they can.
And I honestly can't sense any kind of character development currently..

From my point of view there is another anime, which gives me a better feeling of how adults engage life this season..

TLDR.. The anime is getting repeating, wont be one of my favorites (like another one this season), but its not that bad that I would stop watching it..
If you are sad, stop being sad and watch anime instead

Yesterday isn't the most "mature and adult" anime out there (hi, Wave!), but it's like I said before, despite being a bit more "mature and adult" adult than usual the comments are more juvenile than average.
The story is just a bit more subtly told, but many comments lack any subtlety and nuance, some getting to the point of straight up misinterpreting what happened on screen.

The reason why Haru insists on Rikuo is similar to why Rikuo insists on Shinako.
Yes, he didn't had talked with him before, but like him she spent years watching from after and fantasying with him. 5 years! You don't need more reasons to justify her interest, there aren't other competitors (except Minato that's already out) and most importantly, Haru have huge daddy and mommy issues. Did you forgot how her parents divorced and how her mother kept changing boyfriends? It was during this time that Haru was fantasying with Rikuo, all alone, and wishing for a true and lasting love that she was desperate to have in her life again.
Yes, this is an issue, but every character in this story have it's own issues.

I kinda like minato's character. He's a smooth talker. And despite being rejected in the end, he actually did everything perfectly.

Uozumi on the other hand, doesn't really get much of a development. And i feel like he's not getting any spotlight for the next few episodes. For the last two episodes, the story have been switched into the other characters perspective. And i think this is going to continue for a while.

I just noticed something important! These cuts make it look in the anime that Haru is the reason why Rikuo is "changing", which gives ammunition for those who accuses her of being a "maniac pixie dream girl" that only exists in the story to change the life of the poor boy.

This isn't true in the original!
She wasn't the reason why she started to make that change.

This anime really delivers some hard hitting stuff. Forcing you to think about your life and all that. Really good to watch as it doesn't end the moment the episode is finished.

I've already committed myself to continue with this show, but man, my opinion of this show has not improved at all with this episode. Actually, it kinda worsened.
This episode somehow feels like filler. Not like it really matters. Basically, former high-school friend of Haru shows up out of nowhere. Friend mentions having crush on Haru but not much more connections beyond that. Friend meets with Haru to confess feelings from the past. He then basically gets up and leaves almost right afterwards. What the actual heck. Was anything particularly accomplished.

For anyone who says Haru is gonna end up like the main heroines in KimiSui and Your Lie In April.....I wouldn't bet on it because she seems like an anime-original character inserted here for some complicated purpose.

And boy, those "coincidental" meetings continue on, don't they?

Damn Rikuo is getting quite a lot of hate, isn't he?

I do feel that he's acting a little too agitated in this episode, partly thanks to him being a bit upstaged by Minato and his talent of photography which his photo did win first prize in the competition, but I think people are jumping to conclusions too easily as well. You can tell that Rikuo's still has feelings for Shinako, but his jealousy of Minato does show that he's starting to see Haru in a different light as well. He's in a bit of a tricky position now, so while I do understand his position here, I do hope he does that a bit kinder to Haru a bit more often.

Besides, his reaction to her saying to him "Am I this pretty?" was pretty amusing, though. =3

Anyway, this episode was really good. Minato was a character that was quite at first, but the more we knew about his connections with Haru and what he wanted to do in life, I warmed up to him quickly. His love confession to Haru wad rejected, but he took it extremely well. Haru's reasoning for rejecting him was understandable, too. The odds might be against her, but she wants to commit down the route she's taken, so that's why I'm rooting for her to succeed in winning Rikuo's love.

Who needs Rikuo.

Damn, Minato seemed like a perfect fit for Haru, too bad she's so set on her love for Rikuo. But it would be unfair if she settled on her back-up choice so I kinda understand that this was right. And Minato seems like a cool guy who's genuinely invested in photography and it's great that some romantic attachment doesn't distract him from what he tries to achieve.

That photo of Haru at the end was indeed beautiful.

No, because the anime is good! Good!
There's not way to escape these differences, always happens, somethings is always left behind because the anime don't have enough time to all the scenes and character's thoughts.
Just watch the anime. After it ends if you still likes this story (or not) you can go read the manga that also have it's own weakness.

EDIT: remembered something. There's a scene with Minato that was cut that makes Shinako looks "bad". So it's a good thing, right? Seeing how much people are complaining about her.

Haru came almost immediately into the picture, but I guess it's safe to say that Minato would have treated Rikuo differently if not for this coincidence. Not that he was really spiteful or anything, but he was hard to like to be honest. Though Haru and Rikuo's current "relationship" is what is truly hard to like. Right now it's just an one-sided effort and it's kind of sad to watch. Haru is the only one who goes to see and talk to him to keep whatever they have alive, and Rikuo likes the attention since he even got jealous of Minato, but that's it for now. He even told him that he and Haru are friends when she clearly doesn't see him as one. Maybe Haru's perseverance will end up paying off, but I hope it is in a nice way if it does. Then there's Shinako, who realized that the seasons won't wait for her and who is trying to move forward at last. Oh, and Minato's photo of Haru was truly beautiful too.

Excellent episode on its own. Not my favorite of the show, but still good.

That being said? It's very, very much left me confused about the timing of things now. Not to mention relative ages, etc. Or if there's been a huge time skip at some or multiple points.

Why? Because my impression from earlier in the season was Haru only just should have graduated. Shinako seemed so depressed about her not being there for the graduation and everything. And Shinako had only been back for 6 months according to her own dialog. OK, things are clear there...

But now, Minato? He's a former classmate of Haru. But is a second year college student (dropout) during the episode? So we've gotten at least a year worth of extra time since the graduation earlier this episode if that's the case, if not more. I mean, we've definitely had time passing, since it was spring not too long ago and now we're drifting into fall. But a full year on top of that?

Uhm... why do I think Haru bet on the wrong horse here?...

Wow, Minato saved this episode in such a way. He showed up, stole MC's spotlight by acting like a proper adult and left with a photography prize under his arm and a clear conscience in his mind. Damn, what a chad. He will surely be missed.
And on a side note, I see he won the contest with a photo of Haru from when they were in high-school. That was indeed a really nice detail.

Now on the negative side, I honestly can't understand the fact that despite having mostly an adult cast, most of the characters still act like teenagers. Especially Rikuo, who becomes more boring and even annoying with every passing episode. He may have an inferiority complex or something similar to justify his childish attitude but seriously, he was quite obnoxious this time.
I also fail to understand what Haru sees in the guy and considering how the show is avoiding explaining such essential matter, it seems it will take some time until she finally says her reasons.

We've only seen Minato in one episode and he's leagues better than Rikuo, the man with a fucking log stuck up between his ass cheeks all the time.

Haven't read the manga but considering the pace of the series and just how things are going,

I think reading the manga would help a great deal in understanding. And your thinking of what will happen to Haru is wrong.

In context, the manga is a 90s slice of life romantic drama, the pace can be rather slow and dragged out by today's standards, but perhaps other people find it okay. It all depends on context and understanding I suppose.

Does anyone know what it's like to have no clue of what's next after college, or whether there's anything left now that college is done? Then maybe you can understand Rikuo. I've been there myself, so I get Rikuo. Even extending that mindset to Haru and Shinako, though it maybe shouldn't be that way, makes sense.

There are no heroes/villains in this tale, or not even better/worse love interests, just people trying to work out their lives, maybe clear up the mess or decide the next path to take. That's what this story is and what it all leads to.

Another week and another episode of Yesterday wo Utatte and yes ... it's my favorite of the season.

This time it was super interesting to see how Minato's introduction helped a little so that both Haru and Uozumi began to see what their relationship is really like and that, especially Uozumi, they realize that something is happening, that they really begin to have feelings here.

The best: See the jealousy of both :)

Undoubtedly this is getting better and better, so .. wait for the next one !!

Minato is the hero this anime deserves, but not the one it needs right now. So the immature characters will reject him. Because he can take it. Because he's not their hero. He's a productive adult with goals.

Yeah, these are people in their mid and lower twenties, trust me, they still often act like teenagers. I see this on a frequent basis. So still perfectly believable to me. Especially from people who have some emotional issues, or lack of purpose, etc.

I kinda liked the new character but... What was the point? Minato showed up out of nowhere and now he's problably gone the same way.

Another thing that is really weird is the relationships that this anime has established, Haru is obsessed with Rikuo because only god knows why, this Minato guy likes Haru because she never talked to him ??? Shinako is still stuck in the past after like 10 years.

Interesting start but the show is so slow paced that almost makes me wanna sleep sometimes, I also don't understand why it has the seinen tag on it when it's clearly just overly dramatic.

I won't drop this anime because I still have hopes for it.

It has a seinen tag because the manga it is adapting was published in a seinen magazine. Nothing more, nothing less.
Being a seinen has actually nothing to do with a supposedly maturity (of tone or themes) or violence/gore (when it comes to action shows).

I couldn’t agree more. Seems like he’s blind to how uniquely sweet and interesting Haru is as a character. But at the end of the day she’s kind of just following him around so I think it’d be dumb to expect him to act crazy friendly with her.

Minato is to Haru what Shinako is to Rikuo.

Episode five highlights how both Haru and Rikuo have had adulthood forced on them in their respective experiences. They both have people that they’ve had romantic potential with that are both excelling in their professional life, being adults while they struggle to measure up to societies expectations. It’s exploring the same theme in a different way that builds Haru as a character and should give a rough sketch of at least one reason she identifies with & cares for him.

I’ve pointed out elsewhere that while Haru is incredibly likeable to the viewers, she isn’t owed anything including special treatment from Rikuo as she’s more accurately a very present semi-welcome stalker than she is a friend. So while many want this to develop like a typical romance, it’s not that, their relationship isn’t that so Rikuo isn’t an ass for tolerating Haru or at times treating her like a soft nuisance.

SYFM continues to be a powerful work through the way it reflects a common experience among millennials & Gen Z. We’ve gone to school, studied and work dead end Starbucks jobs while we watch a few of our peers fly higher than they maybe ever even asked for.

The show could stand to incorporate more contemplative flair like March Comes in like a Lion, and maybe some more of the lived in feel & stresses of Maison Ikkoku, but all in all it’s still by far the best show of the season.

It's your fault in this case, the episode showed very clearly the passage of time visually. I commented about this, how they used a double exposure of the tree in front of the gallery during the montage with Minato to convey how much time exactly was passing during that montage.

The thing is, we got 4 episodes before with a decent pacing, and then we get this massive jump with almost no context. Even if the lapse was shown "visually" the transition between the last one and this was awful.

Doesn't help either that these characters didn't had any significant growth in that lapse, except Rikou who regressed by getting jealous of a random plot device.

I can't really understand what people see on this anime, but I'm sticking on the ride because otherwise "YoU DiDn'T eVeN FiNisHeD iT tO VoIcE aN oPinIoN"

Not like knowing that really helps. Even if it was obvious, the chosen “siegeway” from one subplot to a new one wasn’t necessarily a good one. Why need the timeskip in the first place, anyway? Why not just introduce the new guy within a shorter time period? What about the main characters’ mutual progression during that timeframe? We just skip over it like nothing? If something unusual happened like one of them goes missing or is in a prolonged comatose state, then I wouldn’t question the timeskip. But no, it just feels like a new character pops in and then leaves right afterwards with not much change or meaningful addition to the main story.

Honestly, I've already read a few chapters of the manga but I'm not beyond the point where Shinako tells Rikuo about the death of Rou's brother.

Anyway, I think Rikuo is an asshole. I know that this take place in the 90s but that doesn't excuse his behavior towards Haru. People are saying they relate to him, that's fine. Personally, I don't and I have a huge issue with people like that in real life as well. I am not friends with people like him which is why I find his assholery annoying.

We all consume media in different ways, I do think this is one of the best series currently airing but I have no interest in understanding Rikuo. This series, at the end of the day, is just another form of entertainment. A little on his background may shed some light on his behavior but it won't mean I'll sympathize, empathize or even side with him at all.

So Minato just came in and went away like how the seasons changed. He really took the crush thing to the next level. Perfect in his memories.

Really hope that Haru ends up with Uozumi. She's hoping to be his number one and not just a backup.

#1 When Haru asked Rikuo what he was buying with his 3 month salary we all knew it was a Camera. HOWEVER when she was joking around with him asking if it was an Engagement ring for her...HE DIDN'T SAY NO! I know I know it sounds crazy BUT he also said later on in the episode that he bought a second hand camera. Now I am not so sure what cameras went for back in the late 90's but it is still rather intriguing. (Also he never told Haru what he was buying as well!)

This is from the 90's?

Thanks for the Haru postage.
When someone asks me why I like anime, I'd say Just Because.

There was also a equal jump in time between episode 1 and 2, that maybe some didn't noticed.

Not like knowing that really helps. Even if it was obvious, the chosen “siegeway” from one subplot to a new one wasn’t necessarily a good one.Why need the timeskip in the first place, anyway? Why not just introduce the new guy within a shorter time period? What about the main characters’ mutual progression during that timeframe? We just skip over it like nothing? If something unusual happened like one of them goes missing or is in a prolonged comatose state, then I wouldn’t question the timeskip. But no, it just feels like a new character pops in and then leaves right afterwards with not much change or meaningful addition to the main story.

Minato coming and going so fast IS THE POINT!
Yesterday may not be the most brilliant of histories but it does some things good and well, SUBTLY! Minato reflect both Rikuo and Haru. Rikuo moved back with his passion, Minato is rushing to move forward. Haru dropped from school to hide herself, Minato drops College to expose himself. "Didn't you see? It's like poetry, it rhymes..."

The "yesterday" in the tittle is because the four main characters (and some others) are stuck in the past. Differently from the main characters, Minato "veni, vidi, vici". Instead of falling in the same trap like the others the just saw the trap and quickly avoided it. He didn't stayed thinking about the past and what if, he just moved on with his life, easily, something that the main characters are unable to do.
Serves as contrast for us and as example for them.

For all the anime's faults, the problem is with you two @AdolZeppeli @Ryuseishun when you are unable to follow the visual narrative, something very strong in this anime. The high quality animation isn't there just to show of, it serves a purpose.
Many people accused Minato of being "pretentious", but any of them noticed where exactly he was working?

What that "publishing firm" does is actually photobooks for gravure idols, including nude models, softcore pornography. He is not really pretentious with his craft, he just have set goals.

Haru is a stranger, Rikuo knows anything about her and is there uninvited without his permission.
He doesn't want her there, she gets in his way, she causes him stress when he wants to be alone and peach.
No matter how cute and genki Haru can be she is just an annoyance in his life for now.

I hope we'll see this guy later on, 'cause he didn't look uninteresting in terms of development.

I find Haru even more lovely, the way she acts toward Rikuo etc.

I comment on twitter while watching, then I go post on other forums first, and it's tiresome to write so much. Plus english is not my native language...

As the person who talks about how it's comparing to the manga, I point that the anime skipped a whole arc.
Kinoshita have a sister, that goes to the local high school, Haru's school.
She is with a group making a film for the school festival, and she goes to ask help from her brother, Rikuo gets involved because he understands a bit about cameras (the kid are filming on 8mm). During this arc because Rikuo gets involved in an actual project involving photography he reflects about what he really feels about photography. In this episode Rikuo feels much more of an asshole with Minato because of this missing arc. That exchange in the restaurant hurts Rikuo deeply. Maybe Minato was trying to show off a bit to Haru there, but he had no idea how much his words were paining Rikuo.
Why? Because during that missing arc Rikuo reflect why he stopped taking portraits of people. Static images with a photo camera can't capture the emotions he was trying to record. He tried to change to other subject "better suited" for photos and ended feeling an empty failure. Now, rewatch the scene and pay attention to watch Minato talks.
And of course, that he is younger and so resolved about himself and what he wanted to do with his work is something that triggers Rikuo's inferiority complex.

There are other things that the anime skipped, some more important than others.
I expect that the relevant bits will be reworked in later episodes?
It's hard to complain about cuts when for now everything is working so well with such wonderful direction. That time lapse montage of Minato using the tree in front of the gallery as frame to the passage of time in double exposure was wonderful!

Anyway, it's already more than ten years since I first read this arc in the manga and I'm still refuse to fully accept. Even if Haru had accepted Minato nothing would change because he would still left to travel the world, but that he meet someone who really cares about her, lost him, an submitted herself to Rikuo's vile treatment for so long... it's revolting.
It's even sadder when you think how Minato politely "rekt" Rikuo with the competition.

Thanks a bunch for clearing this up. I really felt like I missed episode 4 and had to check. Did it not skip a whole year? Because Minato was in snd year of college. Hadn't Haru just graduated? Or should I say would have graduated if she stayed in Hs. So if he was in her class, shouldn't he be in his 1st year of college?
