just when you think everything is over, yoko comes back with dozens if not hundreds of fans to help them, and with the new song beat the aliens, but i doubt thats the end of the war...
but oji and gang go back to they're normal lives, except for oji who gets one last glimpse of layla and that 10 yen coin

Well I'm glad the Yoko finally got the message. And I'm glad that they didn't end up getting a divorce.

But all and all. A good series. I gave it a 8/10.

if not for Gen, I'd be rooting for a divorce, as it is I'm not really sure that it wouldn't be for the best.

btw, no way she could have gathered anyone in that short of a time, but this series is riddled with that kind of problem, so w/e.

Ending threw me for a loop.

Good show though, very original, especially for it's time.

Well that was something...Yokko coming back with other old fans, she even dressed up for it. We get a happy ending somehow.

That ending was unexpected I totally didn't see his new song coming in ftw, but it makes sense since Watanabe didn't know the song. I was expecting Sato too sing since he was the lead vocalist back in the day.

Overall it was a great anime the plot was decent enough especially later on, the music was fine (OP was sweet too, but that end song was kind of wtf :P), and the characters where pretty cool; I give it a solid 8/10

But that's not really what the show was about though.. It's about being about to grasp the old dreams while being thankful for what you have now. Keeping a young hearth. Layla kinda represented the past. She's still there in the end to represent that theme. Plus his wife had a similar change in the end.

It was pretty great though the thing definitely felt dated and the pacing was strange at time. Would be a great candidate for a remake imo.

Somehow, someway Yoko woke up...and I'm actually shocked that she did. I'm curious did they wipe their memories at the end or something?

Anyway 6/10, great music and a fun anime because its so short.

Just when you think you've all the shows you ever will like, somehting like this comes along and shows you how there's still some unwatched jewels out there. This show is the most fun I've had in a while.

I didn't see that ending coming. How it was the new song (a metaphor for his current self) that would beat the enemy.

Hatul's review which you can find easily on the review page more or less explained the problems I had with this series. The sci-fi was not necessary, I would even call it as Hatul said it, a lazy plot device.

The first review by ZephSilver is a fairly apt description of the show, being similar to FLCL, is as much of it literal as it is metaphorical. Unfortunately, they didn't have the budget and animation pizazz of FLCL to properly run through the themes as successfully, in which I think if they had stuck to the general themes of "American Beauty" and "Death of a Salesman" would've been preferrable and far more easier to illustrate convincingly.

I want to give a high score, I want to be enamoured by the unusually relatable themes this soul of rock show, I want to get the word out of this tragically forgotten gem amongst the waves of mainstream shonen with their cast of industry boardroom approved cardboard characters. But I can't the show, has several 'flaws' I just can't seem to surmount, no matter how awesome the guitar riff howls.

6/10 it is, not enough to push it to a 7.

Haha, so the not-infidelity ends up being infidelity. Way to stomp all over your thematic buildup with one scene. If space concerts serve as the metaphorical affair with the cute space chick, why actually include a romance with the cute space chick? Felt sorry for his wife who some people seem to have interpreted as a villain, as well as Fomalhaut who I could tell as soon as I saw him, that he was written into the show just for NTR bait. Other than that I think it was pretty solid.

overall i liked this series a lot. it was definitely something new, though im sure comparisons will be made to macross. that kiss at the end plus layla coming back to earth leaves a lot of room for imagination. overall i dont really understand all the hate the wife got throughout the series. if you people intend to have wives one day, how exactly do you think she will act? the wife was pretty spot on although she was a little LAX about her husbands relationship with layla. and in the end she was totally right in disliking her so...

The first half of this show was pretty uneventful and the second half was random and riddled with plot holes but damn if it didn't have moments that got to me. I'd say this was a pretty good anime that could have been really great but lacked in execution. 6/10

Sadly the last arc or I say the final three episodes weren't qualitatively great as the rest of the episodes as how the plot devices were too convenient and taking the alien plot went too serious which rather loses balance of the story or raises many questions but still thankfully there were still some really nice moments (like that cliche had me goosebumps as how he beat the boss simply changing music. Amazing unforgettable feels) how that really makes up for it. The ending could been better too imo.

Overall this was interesting sol gem show and I rarely appreciate the slow-paced or the laid back feels kind of show but found this show incredibly fun. Really wished the final arc direction would been better that really snatches away from being this all-time classic 90s show but anyway this show managed to end up very memorable watch for me.

Wow, I didn't see the ending with Yokko coming. Pleasant surprise that sweetened the finale a bit up for me, yet I can't deny that I wasn't as fond of the sci-fi space war aspect overall. It was ok while there was still a balance between it and the slice of life part. Unfortunately, the balance was nonexistent towards the end. Technically speaking nor presentationwise there wasn't much going for it either.

Themes and message were good, but it was cool how Ouji tried to became a better family father throughout the series while still pursuing his passion/youth and I liked the role Layla played inmidst of that as well. There was also the odd trio with some funny moments here and there. So yeah, liked it overall, but personally, I would like to see a series with similar themes that has protagonist that isn't a rocker.

Re-watched this show today...and i still love it.Obvious it several plotholes and generic shit, but it was fun show. There were 2 tracks from the ost that was fire;13 - Layla's theme I and 22 - Let me go, let you go.In the last few scenes why did Layla come back to earth? She was engaged, all their enemies were defeated and Layla=Ouji shared a goodbye kiss.Really wished they did a ova or short special on why she came back .

Pretty good kiss between Layla and Ouji at the end... well it was definitely a great ending I think, they won thanks to Yoko who finally understood Ouji + thanks to the really good song xD + Ouji situation got just totally saved at the end, he could have ended up dead + single xD

I'm pretty sure that the ending thing with yoko and the others coming in was not real. First off, the way it looks she comes there alone (or with Gen). Then suddenly there's a massive crowd? So either she (and Gen) came, or not even them. I think it was all in Oji's head, imagining/wishing that there were people listening. The song is very sad, lonely and desperate. I think the fact that there was no crowd makes sense with the song.

I know it's metaphorical, but this is the only point in the series where it gets muddy. I choose to believe that he decided to express himself with this song in his last moment, in an empty arena before he believed he would die, leaving his wife and child behind who are completely unaware of the situation. I mean look at the scene when he makes the call. It's telling us that he's delusional, and alone. Frankly I imagined that they wouldn't even end up together at the end. But I think after he got back they patched things up because at that point, he had finally managed to let go of the past and was ready to move on (and the space war ended, lol). Thematically this all makes sense rather than some weird and impossible feel-good stupid ending that craps all over everything the show establishes. Add to all this that we never see any interactions between any of the supposed crowd members. I would at the very least have expected to see one scene with Yoko and Ouji after the show on the spaceship.

So to summarize: He played the ending song in an empty arena, there never was any crowd. They didn't get divorced not because yoko suddenly went into space (look they literally say that he shouldn't have his head in the clouds) and realized that he was telling the truth, but because after he had finished his relapse into youthful dreams he was ready to move on. OR thematically she recognizes his dreams and does end up with her head in the clouds too for a moment. I mean it does kind of work considering that she's always pushing against him on the topic. But either way there was almost certainly no massive crowd in my opinion.

Edit: thinking about it more I'm finding the fact that Yoko does show up more and more emotionally and thematically satisfying. And that the fact that she finally recognizes him and his dreams is essentially for him the same as (or even greater than) having a massive crowd of fans cheering him on. I think that the song is perhaps more bittersweet than melancholic. And the lack of scenes between them may be because there was a time limit that they planned poorly around. But considering the extra opening I doubt it.

This anime was going well. Except for the final kiss, that put the score at 4/10 to me. Shouldn't have betrayed his wife. Especially because in the end 85% of the blame for the family situation is on Ouji. If you pay attention Yoshiko is a great wife, sure she is not perfect. But many of the things she did was simply because Ouji was distant physically and emotionally (you don't simply leave your wife with a little kid alone at night without them knowing where you are, wtf), he almost wasn't even an acquaintance for her, let alone a husband, a friend. When she saw him naked she said there was a long time she didn't see that and she said it in a way thet she'd like to have more intimacy with him. This is a great sign in a relationship where things are weird (as this goes beyond s*x, ofc), it shows there is a lot of hope.
The guy didn't even know much about his own kid. That's just stupid.
Most of his behavior has roots on ingratitude. This has been even more common these days so in the end it was interesting to see this theme in something this "old".
Not surprised that most people blame Yoshiko tho. Especially the average lonely dude on the internet. You need to be an actual man to recognize your role in a relationship.

It was surprisingly good. it's kinda underrated too. I'm amazed how many people are suggesting that he should've cheated with Layla, people really don't know relationships work. Yoshiko wasn't a perfect wife, as she undermined her husband's passion for music but given the circumstances, she tried the best she could act, actually 10 times more than Ouji. Ouji is an overall good character you can easily sympathize with him and can see he's trying his hardest. the only disappointment for me was the last kiss, I mean Layla kissing him we can understand but his kiss in return was a setback for his character. I thought Yoshiko would kill him at that instant. Overall 7+/10
It is shocking to find how many people do not believe they can learn, and how many more believe learning to be difficult.

with a few more eps this show could have been something really special. I feel like it glossed over too much Oji and Yoko's marital issues.

Another thing that would have improved it is more variety in music. That one riff over and over started to get old. If I cared enough, I'd edit in more michael schenker tracks in place of the original audio.

The relationship in this case didnt work. Yokko has, as shown in the series, did everything she could to destroy any dreams her husband had. In fact he should have divorced her before the show even bagan just based on what she remmebered doing in one of the episodes.

Meh. Wanted nothing more than to like this anime given its strong OP. Seriously, it's too good for the actual series. This anime has so many fantastic themes. Heavy metal, intergalactic battles and alien babes. How could this fumble so hard!

The music, especially the solo Oji weaponizes, is incredibly repetitive. We don't get much time with the other band members. It was insufferable how awful they made Yoshiko. Primarily to carry Layla through as an object of desire. Kept waiting for Yoshiko to support Oji in some way but she simply was used to push the MC towards the hot blonde alien. Which doesn't even go anywhere meaningful! Would have loved for Yoshiko and Oji to either fix their relationship or realize they weren't the best people for each other. This way we can give our girl Layla some dignity and not be the cheap fantasy middle-aged folk dream about on the side.

Missed opportunity for Oji to teach Layla's people how to jam. Would have been nice if Oji and Layla were able to connect more through the music itself this way.

I suppose my main issue is not knowing much about the alien adversaries. We don't even get to see them let alone get a real introduction. Bad aliens are bad and destructive, of course. Bummer.

The promo posters had me believing that Layla was eventually going to take up a guitar and slay the aliens herself, once Oji started in on his self-doubt. Too bad Oji didn't pass the torch but this is a tale about being able to chase your dreams at a later stage in life. Points for that I suppose.

Fun overall. Layla deserved better and John Sykes was the reason I stayed to the end.
