THIS IS AN ANIME ONLY DISCUSSION POST. DO NOT DISCUSS THE MANGA BEYOND THIS EPISODE. ---------------------------------------- The plot is simple yet relaxing and touching to watch....from a simple encounter - either Natsume meets Tsumura or Nyanko meets the troublemakers - begins the story in a good pace......quite funny to see Taki chasing the cat to other town..LOL Overall, the ending is nice as always.. p.s. mini triplet Nyanko are too cute... |

Was finally able to watch it now that it was finally subtitled. A little surprised by the poll that people hated it. There weren't any subtitles till just recently, (literally today) and I doubt all the people who participated in the poll didn't need subtitles. So not sure how they were able to rate the movie. I'm guessing it's trolls, but I'm sure not all of them are trolls. Either way, the movie was cute. It was really just a long OVA, but thats how a lot of anime movies are, if its a show adaptation. The movie had consistent animation, which is good. The 3 Nyankos were super cute as well! It's not as good as some other episodes were, and it wasn't as heartwarming as I thought it would be (it was still heartwarming, but there are definately other scenes in the show that are more so). But I still really liked it and it was entertaining. It was worth the watch in my opinion! For me, I would give it a 4/5! |

That movie was very good ,I'm glad to see natsume again .This felt more like a long episode than a movie but that's perfectly fine .As always ,a very heartwarming story , good characters ,a lot of feels, the 3 nyanko sensei are so damn cute and funny though .I highly recommend this movie for natsume fans . |

That movie was great. It was very much Natsume. I thought they did a near perfect job of adapting a large Natsume story arc into a movie form. |

The movie was good but nothing special. Felt like a long ova or a filler for people who are new to Natsume. I'm not sure why they made a movie with a mediocre story which is not moving the main plot forwards (What happened to Reiko, who is his grandfather etc..). Especially after the last season i expected way more. The manga is now running for more than 13 years, it's time for some answers. Rating: 7/10 |

Most of what makes Natsume good in one movie. The way the plot elements started coming together was really interesting. It's good for a franchise movie to be stand-alone to some extent. I also don't think it was the place for that kind of answers. The story itself was probably one of the best in the franchise, and I don't think it's fair to consider it mediocre just based on the fact it didn't continue certain overarching plot elements. The manga is now running for more than 13 years, it's time for some answers. |

I agree that for the franchise it can be better that a movie is stand-alone, it's quite common, but that thinking made many anime movies average at best. I get your point, to be clear i don't think its mediocre because it is not continuing the main plot! Imo it was far away from being the best story in the franchise and a letdown compared to the last seasons. So why you think it had one of the best stories? |

Azazin said: Well it both depends on the actual franchise and how the movie plays out. Unowen said: It's good for a franchise movie to be stand-alone to some extent. I get your point, to be clear i don't think its mediocre because it is not continuing the main plot! Imo it was far away from being the best story in the franchise and a letdown compared to the last seasons. So why you think it had one of the best stories? You have episodic movies like in battle shounen where they fail to get what makes those series interesting in the first place. The scope of the arcs, the time they normally take to develop their antagonist and side characters, and why for those a movie format normally feels rushed and underwhelming to say the least. Those are also series where you mostly care about certain overarching elements and how they're integrated in the specific arcs, so the fact most things remain unchanged after the movie is annoying. They work like fillers. Then you have directors like Oshii who strive for making their movies stand-alone in the sense they have a purpose and point by themselves. This is something he mentioned in a Beautiful Dreamer interview referring to Urusei Yatsura's Only You, a movie he directed which unfortunately for him only felt like a long episode from the series. What he made with the next movie went beyond what the franchise offers for a reason, even if it wasn't immediate fan material. Which leaves us with the Natsume movie, which had an easier time highlighting the good elements of the series and finding value by itself since it's one of those series where you enjoy more the journey than the destination (and why I don't see not giving those long-term answers a problem). The retelling moments were few and not detrimental (like how he introduces the youkai or the fact he is able to see them). In the way they are included it reminds more of the episodic opening in Mushishi with the female narrator than a recap for people who doesn't know. So simply put, it was elegantly included and makes the movie more solid in its own, being obviously useful for any new watcher, but without overdoing it (like for instance it could've explained what's wrong with the exorcists or the Matoba clan, yet it chose not to). As of why I particularly liked it, for a series like Natsume that is largely made of standalone stories the movie format allows it to take its time to develop things instead of promtly close them as it normally did in the 1-ep ones. And it did this by introducing the different characters and scenarios and slowly make them converge towards the end. It was refreshing and had some really good and tight writting, yet not leading to any overly obvious closure either. It's this effect and how it flowed what made it really good, even if we've perhaps seen some more interesting youkai stories in the series. |

Great movie Nice to the problems of youkai that Natsumi helps to work out. Glad he was able to give Mutuko and solve some of the problems he created by becoming Yorie's son, turning Sensei into 3 kittles completely destroying everyone's memory of certain people |

Lovely movie, even if its been two years it felt like home coming back to this wonderful anime, the story was as always feely and seeing so much cameo felt good. The only thing that bothered me tho was that at the end of Natsume Roku,Natori finally knew about Natsume having the book of friend if i recall correctly but we didn't have any interaction about that in the movie, does that mean that this movie is considered filler ? |

I waited so long for this! I missed these characters so much!! 。゚(゚´Д`゚)゚。 When the story started, they introduced so many elements that I was wondering how or if they were planning to bring it all together. Surprisingly, they actually did it in a lovely way. While not as emotional as the original manga, this is still quite good. I loved the story so much. Cant wait for a Natsume Yuujinchou Shichi. The word Tsunagari, the kappa and finally Murase Ayumu made me miss Sarazanmai so badly. Lol, they brought the two stupid exorcists back. |

This was so beautiful and moving, just as I would expect from Natsume Yuujinchou. Sasada's speech was poignant and beautiful, since it was about a memory of a place that no longer exists. Of how things with form are fated to break one day, but that something remains even if we eventually forget about them, and it change us and the way we interact with the world around us. I would love to know more about Reiko too. Natsume went through a lot, but he finally has a place to call home, a place he can go back to in which he is loved. He finally has someone like Tanuma, Taki and even Natori, who he can rely on. And friends like Nishimura, Kitamoto and Sasada. He is no longer alone. But what about Reiko? Was she able to meet someone, to form bonds like Natsume did? I would love to eventually know. Yorie's reaction must have hurt her too, no matter how "used" she was to people avoiding her like that, but I really liked to know that she wasn't avoiding her in the end, she just couldn't bring herself to say something as "simple" as a "Thank you". And I love how this touched Natsume. Reiko was gone and Yorie could no longer thank her, but Natsume could still say "thank you" to Yuuki, one of the few people who tried to reach out to him in the past, and it was beautiful. I would like to believe it's worth to reach out and say what you have to say, it can make a difference or at the very least give you closure. I wondered why Yuuki was introduced at first, since he seemed disconnected from the rest, but it was worth it. I'm still sad over Mukuo/Honokage though. He was cursed to wander around, able to easily blend in, but unable to truly form an everlasting bond with someone, no matter how much he cared. He had to content himself with a "lie." But he found someone he couldn't leave alone, and a place to stay by her side. The whole thing with memories vanishing was scary at first, since the cause was unknown and memories are really important. But I wish he could've stayed with her longer, but maybe this was for the best. She lost her memories of the past eight years she spent with her 'son', but I don't think she's lost the way she felt for having him with her, and in a way it made it easier for her to accept that he was tragically gone. I was bummed when we didn't get a clear view of Honokage's true form too, but then we saw him in Yorie's paper cutting and he was majestic, and Natsume won't forget him. Then Honokage's memory of Reiko, who was 'okay' with being forgotten, but I loved that it was clearly shown that she wasn't, that she had an impact on the people she met. To finish, I loved how Nyanko-sensei was divided in cute triplets, I loved that Tanuma was the one who realized that they needed to be stacked to talk, and that he was the one to ultimately reunite Ichigou, Nigou, and Sangou too. I hope that little girl wasn't too sad, and understood that that little kitten had someone to go back to. Her mother caught those three frogs so fast though, I don't know if I could do it. lol And I guess this is it. Beautiful, poignant, and wholesome. |

That ayakashi looks like that speechless ayakashi from Sen to Chihiro no Kamikakushi, except it can talk. Another ayakashi wants its name back. Then he met someone who knows his grandmother on the way back from going on errand. She was just curious, but not as familiar. Another suspicious ayakashi on the way back. Megane girl's memory of the old ep. in speech. He met a megane guy who became friend in elementary school but didn't end well. He met the son of the lady he met before, and went to her house again. Nyanko-sensei becoming three cute kittens from eating fruits from suspicious ayakashi tree, then went missing. Some friends also forgetting people's name because of missing kittens. The two kittens are in that lady's house. They eventually found a way to talk, too. The son was ayakashi who can change to human form and somehow memory can be affected when he's around. He was protecting her from another ayakashi. Meeting Ishida-san's character doing his job. lol @ getting captured by human girl again. That ayakashi was just shiki who lost its master. The ayakashi who changed to the son also got his name taken by grandmother, too. Ishida-san's character helping out again. Nyanko-sensei finally back. That shiki became so cute. The bell finally returned. She started her art because of the grandmother. Natsume confronted that megane guy and amended that misunderstanding. |

Yorie and her friends were laughing and scared of Reiko, she shouldn't have sugar coated it to Natsume. They were indirectly bullying her when they were younger, and she should've just said it to Takashi, instead of saying they were admiring her. Why didn't she take the bell, when Reiko was offering it back to her? That moment proved that she was frightened of her and her strange tendencies. Anyways, I still think what Honokage did to Yorie, pretending to be her dead son was also wrong. I get it he was trying to protect her, but still it felt wrong stringing that person along. I felt like he was holding her back in moving on with her life, and only set aback her grief. But I'm glad he realized that, and decided to disappear after asking his name back from Takashi. I see the other yokai got exorcized when Honokage faded out, I thought it was the cutest exorcism ever when it multiplied and disappeared in that chibi form. Natsume was also able to deal with his past. I liked the clearing things up with Yuuki, it was heartwarming and will enable Natsume to move forward. Although I felt it was unnecessary, since Takashi has already taken major steps in moving forward. Sensei in kitten forms was really cute! This movie kinda fused so many things into the plot. Like Mukuo's story, Reiko's past, Natsume's past and madara's form crisis. They didn't gel well together, some other stories should've been told separately like in a special or an OVA. But the animation was the same old good one, characters were good, pacing was slow and fitting. But the plot was a bit all over the place. But I enjoyed it, even if on the technical side it didn't pull through. 8/10. |

I had this film in Plan to Watch (added it before it was out) and forgot about it until I came again accros it today. Oh my how much Natsume missed me...! This was like a normal season episode but overpowered: Longer, and with more stories in it. But not one story and another following, no: just one big story made of story chunks, it's really well built and the stories are perfectly linked together!! Loved it! |

3 minutes into the movie; as with all movies, the music's cranked up to 20 while the voices are at 10, murdering my ears any time a musical score is playing, -woman's son is introduced, staring up at nothing, my deduction; that's an effing yokai, he's super-dead, that's most definitively a yokai. i was going for "can also see yokai" at first, but with that face, he's for sure a yokai. -flashed photo of him in what could be hiking gear. yep. he's dead. fo sure. ahshiet, did SHE get a seed from that tree and it turned into a copy of her son and that's what he was staring at while spacing out in the yard >O>?! ohno, time for sensei to become a mummy O.O' OHFA-... he exploded x3 woah, nyanko torture-fest. i bet everyone except Misuzu's gonnat get burned by the end of this _x3 prllffffttt- and Chobi's laughing his butt off AH! HER NYANKO-SENSE IS TINGLING!! ...what's up with that ominous wind and soundtrack..? phew. t'was just a dream.. but now we've two very suspicious people.. or just Natsume's paranoia, hm.. Aaaaaannnnndddddd-confirmed. hah- even got the mountain-climbing right. well, i said hiking, but still, same junk "Ohwhat a coincidink, Natori- i happen to know exactly the guy, hurr-durr!" annnd- movie over i agree with those saying it felt like one long episode of the series, nothing outrageously amazing or fantastical happened, but was still nice and interesting with some fun things here and there, though also quite predictable. still a decent movie though, and i guess a decent break for those still waiting for another season of the anime -w- |

Beautiful movie. I was worried how can they pull off over 100 minutes of a single story for this anime but they did it. Lots of classic as well as new characters involved. Honokage was blessed - one of the best youkais so far imo. The scene where he was disappearing applying the multiplication magic along the soundtrack was great. Sensei's little form and the voice was amazing lol. I need a s7 in my life now. |

I liked this. It was like a normal episode, except drawn out into a full length movie. I actually wouldn't mind that format if they ever green-lit another season. But like all the previous anime seasons, I'm still left wanting to know more about Reiko, beyond how she got a name from a yokai after winning a match. For example, we still know jack shit about Takashi's grandfather. But as far as story for this movie itself goes, it was enjoyable as a standalone movie, and I'm happy all the loose ends got tied up nicely. |

"Ephemeral Bonds" is a very poetic title for this movie. It plays very nicely on the different encounters that occurred throughout the film. Brief & easily swept away, but leaving behind something precious & lasting. The ED's lyrics really captured this well and left me in awe. I could really do with more feature length films for this series. Everything flowed smoothly and I found myself losing track of time even as I've become used to savoring each 20 minute episode from previous seasons. This movie was a fantastic blend of strong points from the past, bringing it all together. I might have cried if this was the end, but that next season lingering in the distance has me hopeful. Catching glimpses of Reiko's background always captivates me. It really hit home when she says that she wants to be forgotten while still holding onto the bell as a memento of such a trivial encounter. Those final moments with Yorie really wrapped it up beautifully. As Natsume eloquently puts it, "It seemed as if Yorie-san's grief landed softly." Smoothing things over with Yuuki at the end really did it for me. It contrasts strongly with that lingering regret Yorie had for not being able to thank Reiko. It's also a strong moment for Natsume to find yet another ray of light in his journey. 9/10 |
