THIS IS AN ANIME ONLY DISCUSSION POST. DO NOT DISCUSS THE MANGA BEYOND THIS EPISODE.
----------------------------------------
Watched yesterday Haikara-san ga Tooru Movie 1 at the Akibapass Festival in Frankfurt, Germany.

It was a great movie, many comical jokes but also very lovely storytelling included. The creators have taken great care of this production. The character design and composition also make it very enjoyable, too. I didn't expect it to be such a good movie and gosh, what would I give for the clothing shown in this movie, quite a few were stunning. Even the more serious parts of this movie have been realized good.

The only way I can imagine the big cliffhanger to be that Shinobu must have lost his memories. He might be taken care of after his downfall, because he was able to speak Russian, for sure at least a bit as he was studying it. I wonder where this is going...

Can't wait to see the sequel movie, which is announced for 2018. :)

Has anyone else seen it?

Yeah it was released in Japan on the 25th of April, there's just no subs for it in English yet. :(

I know Post Apocalyptic subs picked it up for fan-subbing but they don't show advances with it.

Well, it was a nice movie with a nice history, but it's so rushed, and the direction in drama parts was very bland. I didn't felt a lot of emotion from the movie. Hope in the next one it'll get better

I enjoyed it. I wasn't sure where it was going with the beginning of such blunt traditional values, but it got better as it progressed. Thoroughly confused by that ending though. Was really hoping she'd find him as the rugged leader of a band of thieves and they could begin their new lives.

Those are assumptions only, but if you don't want even that, don't open the spoiler:

I enjoyed it so much! I'm happy that a classic shoujo gets a chance to be animated modernly for us to see. I can't wait to see the next film.

Interesting and very shoujo historical piece. I mean, I had feeling from the the first frame the blond arranged marriage partner was going to win, because this is an anime and [sarcasm]everyone knows parents know best. [/sarcasm] What's maybe surprising is that the plot trajectory is not a love triangle, but rather Benio's growing feelings of love for her arranged marriage partner that overpower her modern desire for freedom of choice. Tamaki is best girl however, because of her exquisite ringlets.

It is 100% accurate that daughters-in-law in Japan were expected to enter the in-laws home and do all their work (I'm not convinced Japanese men in actuality did anything except sit around the house like lions) but this is an aristocratic household. What kind of aristocratic lady cooks and cleans? Don't they have slaves for this?

The Count's rather silly declaration he will kill Ranmaru for breaking a plate is I believe a reference to a Japanese folk tale about the ghost of a maid killed by a samurai for that reason.

Noticed a reference to the American Polar Bear expedition. I like that rather than WWI, a more obscure war is chosen for a historical backdrop: the Allied attempt to intervene in the Russian Civil War.
The dub makes the error of calling the Russian troops Cossacks; even if they do look like Cossacks, Cossacks fighting for the Reds is extremely unlikely.

gah...barely even shoujo...they could have made the girl more modern, in the classic sense since this was set decades ago, and it was so boring...2/10

Nice to see an old manga getting a new adaptation

Quite the unique cast and a lot more comedic moments than I expected

seeing the ending, I guess Shinobu has some kind of amnesia and is now going out with some russian girl and I suspect the gang leader to be the guy with the scar but let's see in the second movie

A movie I enjoyed more than I expected. The pacing was too rushed, and moments weren't properly developed, but I still enjoyed it. I liked the animation and character designs. I also really like Benio. She's so energetic and independent and just fun and interesting to see!

I do think this movie could've been way better if they had developed the moments for, especially the dramatic ones. Some developments were just so quick that they sort of made no sense or felt forced, like how Shinobu managed to win over his men, Shinobu trying to rescue his sergeant, and even overall how Benio slowly fell in love with Shinobu. I was a bit confused at why Benio suddenly seemed like she was in love despite not seeing much development.

Also, I sort of liked the whole traditional vs. modern woman thing at the beginning, but somehow I felt it didn't go anywhere starting from her falling in love with Shinobu. It just sort of faded into the background?

Despite it all, somehow I enjoyed it. I was pretty sad too when Shinobu 'died'. I really thought he did, because they showed Benio even mourning and moving on with life (not necessarily from her love). But I kept thinking this probably isn't what it seems because I know there's a second movie.

And then it came. I was a bit confused at the report, though. He might be the leader of a vigilante group attacking Japanese soldiers? He's either switched sides or it might be as revenge against what the army tried to do with him and his platoon.

Then we saw a random Russian couple. Or so I thought. But turns out it's Shinobu??? And he has his arm around another woman??? I was so thoroughly confused. Still am, now. Did he just somehow fall in love with another woman and abandoned Benio who was grieving and sad at his 'death' like that? That doesn't sound like Shinobu at all. Did he lose his memories?

Now I need to watch the second movie to find out. I hope it's not an unwholesome ending. I really want Shinobu and Benio to finally get married!

7/10 because rushed. Also because it made me feel sad at the end... but mostly because it felt rushed. Really wished the scenes were more developed.

benio is such a likeable character, she's so spunky & had such great dynamics with all of the other characters. she & shinobu were too cute together, seeing shinobu with that other lady made me feel so bad for her, while she was silently holding on & trying to keep things together for his family. ranmaru & ushigorou were so funny & cute as well, they were always there for benio. i also liked the introduction of sakurai takahiro's character too hehe although it was almost at the end when he appeared. in an AU, if benio was really widowed i could totally see them in a stay-by-her-side-silently kind of narrative, that would have been beautiful.

feel hesitant to watch the other movie, it seems to have terrible reviews.....

but i’ll probably remember over and over again

I really loved it. Character designs were really good (reminded me of Itazura na kiss, my favorite romance anime). Character, animation, storyline I loved everything about it.It was the most special thing about the movie is it place where it ended. I was expecting it to end at MC death/funeral but it went beyond and ended at the Manchuria train station part (It was very unexpected and surprisingly better place to end). Damn! that ending was so dramatic in a good way.
my only problem with this was it was kind of rushed. if it was in a tv series format, I would have considered this a masterpiece.

I cant wait to see the sequel

Extremely enjoyable on a technical level (seeing that era alone is pretty damn rare in anime, I believe), though I wish the story went in another direction...I mean, I really rooted for Benio to actually NOT fall in love with this aristocrat soldier, lol. And keep her "I decide my own fate" attitude. Of course, falling in love *could* theoretically happen, and it did, it's just that Benio basically was left with no choice, expelled from home and all that. After all, it ended up being a sweet romantic story, not a film about self-determination or empowerment. Although, it doesn't seem that Benio abandoned her ideals, she just adapted to her new life - I guess her dedication to her new family and running their business is out of love, not reverence for tradition. Plus she finds a job and stands up to a "male chauvinist" or whatever he called himself. Plus she goes after her love, after all. And don't forget the journals Tamaki was reading. The seeds are there.

The first half was absolutely hilarious. Benio won me over instantly and her constant schemes for calling off the wedding had me roaring. Her drunken outbursts were the best part and now I'm morbidly curious to see what a bottle of Vodka could do to her. Or rather, what she could do to a bottle of Vodka.

The second part did a fine job at shifting gears towards the romance & drama. If I had to describe Benio in one word, it would be "intrigue." Certainly, I'm finding it intriguing how she's starting to uphold traditions (such as the white widow's mourning dress) while still innovating her way as Miss Modern. It goes to show that while one shouldn't be too bound by tradition (i.e. the grandfather), there are still some that are worth upholding because of their timeless meaning.

The Meiji & Taisho eras are my favorite historical Japanese settings to explore, particularly because of the unique way that traditional Japan begins to merge with Western innovations. Benio really embodies the spirit of that union.
