The world of this story seems quite interesting. However, considering the story and the characters, it doesn't look like it will give an explanation on the world and what happened.

This show just seems like focusing much more on emotions rather than giving information of the universe it holds. Through this episode, the only thing I've got is "you can be happy with less" or some sort of message.

Or, maybe, that's just because the show is highly likely the type of "show, not tell".

Considering all these thoughts, I started to think that we, maybe, will not even get an explanation about what on earth (puns) has happened. What do you think? Does this have a manga or light novel in which the world and what's really going on has been explained?

This is exactly what that kind of series is going to accomplish. There will be (most likely) no exploration at all. This is not important.
Dub = fake crap. Always.

Would it contribute to the themes and messages of the show if they did tell? The show seems much more focused on everything but how the world became like this. How people relate to each other and how they handle adversity seems way more important to the writer.

Pay attention to the girls' conversations as well as "Easter eggs"( the current date as shown by the camera for one-year 3###-).

But for those that missed it-

The ancient civilization ended a very very long time ago;constant wars over dwindling living space and resources were the cause.(now how long ago consider the survivors built a temple well over 400 yrs before the girls were born).

The survivors clung to the remains of the ancient,vast,mega-cities.So much knowledge was lost & forgotten,with each generation losing even more,these survivors were unable to rebuild or repair these mega-cities.
And humanity in its decline still fights over the few resources left.(hence why the girls well sent off on their "tour")

Also,so many miss this,the girls have been from the first episode on exploring just one of these mega-cities.

Yup, you got it right. Show, not tell. That's the essence of SOL, iyashikei, and any other "plotless" series, and what differs good one and plain one.

The post above me already explained the general yet important stuff.
Let me add something obvious but not yet mentioned: these are all references to real life culture and trends.
The writer and the director want to push it to us that the ancient people that was the ancestors of these girls are us, today's humans. (Thus is why you get a dab in the OP.)
Also the theme of each episode are issues relevant to today's modern life, presented in a post-apocalyptic setting. (well, it's iyashikei lol.)

I still hope they get to tell the story even for one minute or less... Pretty much like the series anyway

Thank you all for your responds. Especially Revvie-chan and Nordhammer for giving details.

Still, I ponder about the universe. It would be better to get the backstory as ibraheem mentions.

@erayerdin

The basics of the backstory are-
A futuristic world became over-populated,resources of all kinds became scarce.The ancient civilization,fighting over the remaining living spaces and resources, wiped itself and most all remaining life out.
Over 400 years after the survivors arose from the ashes,the girls are sent out on their "tour" in order to save them from yet another round of fighting/war.

Episode 9 in particular will provide even more clues towards the setting.

The only background I would really like to see is when/why they started their trip. I think a flashback to their childhood growing up would be great.
