This episode seriously surprised me. I used to see Haruka as that spark plug that would always energize the whole group with her optimism and then episode 23 came along...

Oh...wow. I thought the days of shit hitting the fan due to drama involving Chihaya were behind us.

But then this happens.

As I mentioned in another episode's thread, I expected Miki's flirting with the Producer to become the subject of some scandal, and that would be the drama in the last few episodes. Other than that, I expected smooth sailing to their finale concert.

Needless to say, like everyone else, I was not expecting this.

Well, I was expecting the bulk of the episode. I knew that this last story arc would focus on Haruka. The difficulty she had in getting everyone together for a cheery Christmas episode last time was a sign that her "let's be together" attitude would run into trouble.

The show has tended to be optimistic, and I don't see how the writers would get away with a sad ending at this point (and not have fans raging at them like crazy), but in a way it's being more realistic than I would have expected. As Haruka herself pointed out last episode, the success of the individual idols themselves has made group activities more difficult. And this sort of individualism actually makes sense for the motley crew of characters that the 765 Pro idols are, each of them being very distinctive on their own.

In a way, this less-than-happy take on things has been foreshadowed by the theme song for a while now--it's called "Change" for a reason. :P

Ovindel said:
I also like that she feels more human than some other idols in this show.

She very often seemed more cheery than a person normally would be, but then again, that's her personality--and this episode really hits her hard as her ability to inject happiness into any situation just gets less and less traction, as the team is just slowly drifting apart. It makes sense that the 765 Pro idols would be crazily busy during the Christmas/New Year's season but it really does hit Haruka where it hurts.

----

Anyone else notice that, based on the credits, this seems to be the Producer's episode?

Well, it's also Haruka's episode, but I didn't expect an episode for the Producer.

And not surprisingly, the ending theme...is instrumental. Like how the Producer doesn't have a voice in the games.

Rozziu said:

Yeah. Well, it's also a totally different kind of hurting. I do hope Producer recovers, though.

Too hard ending for that (apparently) light series.

That's another instance of this series's surprising and unexpected "realism". Sure, it's kinda overdramatized, but the fact that not everything is cheery, despite first (and second, and third, etc.) impressions really does make you stop and think about the characters, what they're feeling, what life is like for them, and such.

----

As for Miki, between hating on her and being her apologists, let's take a step back and notice that she's kinda the exact opposite of Haruka in personality. Haruka is very selfless, tries very hard to rekindle team spirit, and cares a lot about making people happy, while Miki just forges ahead with her ambition, doesn't really give a lick about others unless it's convenient and makes her feel good, and is generally rather selfish and inconsiderate. Pitting the two of them against each other was a very wise choice on the writers' part, for the purpose of drama. I agree that Miki isn't evil; she's just rather inconsiderate and selfish. (FYI, I don't like Miki either; she's been my least-favorite of the main cast.)

Props to those of you who have observed that this industry, in real life, probably rewards such dog-eat-dog competitiveness, and Haruka is in some ways too nice for it. Maybe she'll become a producer herself in the future?

HikariNatsumi said:
Haruka is my official #1 idol now. I feel so bad for her since she's always so positive and tries not to make her problems known to everyone else. She probably thinks it is her fault and is now traumatized by what happened.

For now, it seems like Haruka herself needs a good dose of the song "Yakusoku" ("Promise")--with a large heaping of friendship. Seeing the emotional weight of being unable to reunite her friends bearing down on her makes me sad, seeing her straining to put on a front of "everything's fine" almost makes me wanna cry, and seeing her with tears streaming down her face at the end is just heartrending.

Hopefully, the Producer's injury (hopefully not death!) will bring everyone back together and give them a chance to re-unite.

----

Re calls for a second season:

I'm not sure how well this will work. First, you no longer have the narrative of "upstart new production company makes it big as its idols rise to stardom". Second, the cast will be much more scattered--as these past two episodes have implied, you'll have far fewer whole-group events that let the characters interact.

It's still possible to make a series on the professional lives of the 765 Pro idols, but the tone would be notably different.

----

My favorite character is still Chihaya, but Haruka is my second-favorite.

I lol'd.

Yeesh. I can sympathize with Haruka. She's a good, selfless girl, and, well, I can't fault her for feeling a little lonely.

You ever have one of those days where you're feeling down, depressed, lonely, etc, and then someone, like Miki, comes along and says something tactless to you that makes you feel even more like shit? Fucking people, man...
I think most of us can relate to that.

Like someone said a few pages back, all Miki needed to say was something like "Good luck, break a leg, let's do our best." She didn't need to be such a bitch about it.

WAT

This isn't how it was supposed to be, I didn't fucking expect a twist like this in a lighter series like this.
Haruka's suffering was already bad with no practice, everyone separated, canceling the sunday live, Miki really wanting to win against her (though that was reasonable imo) and now THIS.
Though I don't think he will have any serious injuries/death. They probably wouldn't dare something like that, I'm pretty sure.
I can't really blame Miki for anything, only if she will have a grudge against Haruka for this, though I don't think she will. She didn't really do anything wrong apart from unintentionally disturbing their conversation.

By the way Haruka's emotional changes and depression was, as sad as it might be, still beautifully portrayed and done, if you get what I mean. I actually expected Jun Maeda's name to pop up somewhere.

Can't wait for the next one. Producer-san hopefully doesn't have very serious injuries, as I said earlier, so I don't actually worry too much about that. I hope Haruka will come out of the depression soon, though she might even consider leaving 765 Pro. I guess, the others will probably start practicing for the concert.

I feel like it's only a matter of time before Haruka completely breaks down. She's been working so hard to keep everyone and everything together and values her time with the rest of 765 more than anything else. She especially seems to admire Producer and wants to work hard to make his efforts bear fruit as well. I didn't expect something like that to happen at the end, I wonder how the rest of this series is going to turn out.

You know what I don't blame Miki for wanting the leading role all to herself, thats normal. However, I will blame her for her utter stupidity at times, she seriously needs to learn how to read the mood. People will say that she is 15 years old and she's a teenager, but when I was 15 at least I could tell when it isn't time to crack some jokes when drama is about to erupt. Right now, Miki is just annoying to me, she thinks she's all that now, I liked her better when she was pouring her heart and soul into that Ryuugu Komachi concert and when she was just plain lazy and asleep all the time.

Question though, aside from everyone growing apart and such, why is Haruka so upset? Is she upset that the show got cancelled? Or that she has an emptier schedule than everyone else? Or all of the above?

I kept struggling to see why she's so upset-- everyone's busy and stuff, and that's a good thing right? Besides everyone just got together for an Xmas party even though they were all busy, so shouldn't she be a little less worried about everyone moving apart?
Haruka has always been the team unifier so it's obvious she feels lonely now that everyone is slowly drifting to their own worlds. That said, the original trigger is actually less selfish and actually something everyone is guilty of. They are going to have a New Years Concert with all the 765 Pro Stars and even though it's an important concert everyone besides a few, like Chihaya, are just giving the most minimal effort to even try to mold their schedules in order to be able to practice (Miki in particular didn't seem to go to any of the practices at all since she kept going on tours and things like that). It's not like Haruka has no work, in fact she has plenty and even more if she'd go with the flow of things. But she always tried to mold her schedule to go to every practice and to go back to the office at the end, even if it was late. Basically she feels like she's the only one who actually wants to do things as a team, and the others are just prioritizing their personal agendas over their team efforts.

The show's cancellation was more like one final blow to their unity because now they wouldn't even have a single place they would all work together. With that blow she pretty much felt like their unity had vanished.

Thanks for explaining why Haruka was upset, love you.

Ahhh! You can’t end an episode like that! Man, everyone was acting a little off this episode. Miki was kind of mean when she said they couldn’t work together. Why did she have to interrupt the Producer just as Haruka was about say something. I hate it when that happens!

I fell pretty bad for Haruka, she was really attached to all the girls as a group. For her being an idol was a dream, but I think spending time with the other idols and working together was also a part of that dream.

There is obviously a conflict of ideals here. I see what you mean, but I would find it hard to fight to the end for the lead role while at the same time still supporting your opposition. Miki is able to do stuff on her own, while Haruka still yearns for some friendly connection to keep herself going. So, I didn't find her mean at all towards. In fact, I see it as helping Haruka, in a sense, overcome her need of dependency.

This is where I think Haruka's strong point of her preserving the good ol' "danketsu" of 765PRO is also her downfall. They're not always gonna be together, and I think Haruka needs to realize it.

About Haruka: Definitely. But, just because I think she needs to realize that fact, I don't think it condemns the way Miki spoke to her. She could have just as easily simply said "Do your best" or "Let's do our best" and left it at that.

When it comes down to it, what bothers me is the fact that Miki is supposed to be Haruka's friend. Had it been someone she barely knew or someone from outside of the group acting that way, it wouldn't be an issue, I think.

BUT, then where would the end-game drama be? :] Someone needed to drive the final nail intoProducer's the coffin.

She already reliezes that though. She already Reliezed from the beggining it won't stay the same and THAT'S why she's having trouble,it's not just her feeling lonely. It's her conflicted emotions, she wants everyone to succed but she's also scared of being alone. That's who she is, she's smarter then we take her for.

Miki constant calling the producer "Honey" is so unprofessional. I can't imagine an idol in real life calling their producer or manager that. Girl needs to go out and interact with boys her age and keep the relationship between her and the producer strictly business related.

Their schedules are getting more and more packed. Man, just looking at the schedule thing gets me anxious, so much writing..
Haruka continues being the cheerful and motivational leader she is. She is sad but she doesn't show it, and does her best to motivate everyone. Loving her more and more.

I love Little Match Girl so that was really nice to hear! It sounded even better than the Game Version I saw on youtube. Yukiho's voice is beautiful.

Ahh, this isn't gonna end well... Haruka will definitely condemn herself considering how considerate she is. The whole "I'm fine" thing really hurt. And while I don't think Miki is at blame, she did indirectly make Haruka feel like that.
Miki doesn't deserve all that hate tho. It's not like she's the reason things took a turn for worse. And pls, she hasn't been selfish all the time. Sure, she had her childish moments but she's 15 and immature. Still, she always helps her friends when things aren't going in their favor by following well. Remember Azusa's wedding episode. Remember the Ryuuguu Komachi concert. She saved them multiple times. Also she knows how to make good use of opportunities. Got good development, too. Went from sleepy unmotivated "hidden" genius to one who wants to shine, and who'do anything to shine in front of the one she truly loves. She was born to shine tbh. She's realistic.
There are some situations where blaming is completely wrong. And you can't blame anyone. No one is directly at fault and yet things go horribly wrong. It's about looking forward, not looking at each other and pointing at their faces.
That being said, I'm more of a Haruka fan. Loving her role and personality. The growing depression. Her feelings for producer (pls give him the wallet. It's the feelings which count, not the size or value of the thing. Besides, I ship you with him the most! 'nuff said.) She's going to have the best development among the girls by the end.

One thing. Like is hard. Gah.

This episode continues the arc established last time. Wherein the girls are too busy to spend time together. And now it's starting to have a serious effect on Haruka. It doesn't help that Chihaya's temporarily at least not around. Most of this episode was a slow build to the last 5 minutes or so. With a few cool music sequences to be fair. Like Yukiho's confident performance of the "Little Match Girl."

But things come to a really nasty head at the tail end. Haruka and Miki while working on a musical seem to have some tension brewing. And things get worse when a worried Producer comes to check up on Haruka but Miki prevents him from doing so. I liked him sending her off to the snack table to get rid of her subtly though. The episode ends somewhat surprisingly. I wonder how long the Producer will be in the hospital. And just how guilty/depressed an already spiraling Haruka will feel next time.

Up until now the anime was about developing its cast while overcoming their character flaws to reach success and make it in the idol world. Now it's back to focusing on Amami while it deals with the struggles and problems that come with success. I like that shift, it was rather natural and Amami is a good character to view this through. This episode was constantly making me feel worse and worse seeing Amami slowly break down from her normally optimistic never-giving-up self to her miserable and disconnected self at the end.

Well, until the very end where Idol M@ster proves yet again that it cannot deal with drama. When it feels like its time to be serious it becomes a melodrama dealing with death, or at least in both cases tragic accidents. To have that intense piano at the end after such a wholesome show up until this point with stills of Miki and Amami crying and a preview where she's introspecting after we hardly saw any of that the past 23 episode except for in the equally poorly done Chihaya episode was seriously laughable. I don't know if I've seen tone shifts done as poorly as they are in this in memory apart from maybe Akame ga Kill. That may be an exaggeration as it's only occurred twice, but when it has it's been real bad especially in comparison to everything else. If you want to show big tragedies to pull at our hearts at least show the little tragedies sometimes and the character introspections that they will now in their daily life, it'd make the transition natural.

At least the problem I said about the Chihaya arc is a bit patched up. This lonely conflicted Amami arc seems to be going onto its third episode now!

It's incredible, I can't quote people here because some of the post were from 2011 or 2012..

But it's not Miki's fault here.
It's more like Haruka being stupid. Miki is serious when it's about her job, Haruka disrespect her friend for not being competitive here.

And MAL's people again saying bullshit about her being selfish, wtf, she is doing her job and it's not even selfish. It's normal and Haruka need to do the same, to fight equally. It's a competition and they still be friend after that.

The only complain you can do is about her not reading the mood when the producer come to talk to Haruka. At this moment ok, but criticize her saying the truth wtf.

Everyone has so much individual work that group concert is very hard thing.. To gather together at the same time.. Well, I wonder if in life with idols it's like this as well.. That many of them get individual offers, and everyone does their own thing.. Well, who knows..
As well as girls has less time to meet or talk as well, if not don't have time sometimes at all.. So with time it can turn into them being as if part of same agency.. But also many girls can be not familiar with each other..
And even Miki says that's it's not appropriate to try hard together, where Haruka or Miki will be chosen for main role.. Oof.. Well.. Really feels as if girls drift apart further from each other.. With some time they might change their view on each other as just colleagues, rather than friends.. Well, if not some of them look at things like that already, or weren't all along..
