So according to so many people around the internet, Berserk 2016 was a complete failure because of the animation, frame rate drops and Guts didn't really look like Guts. but Guts 2017 there are mixed reviews and I wanted to this this community's input on the new berserk.

Not really watching any of these adaptations, but I really hope the opening single lasts more than a minute and a half this time.

Refuse to even watch it. I thought the movies were bad and cringy. The 2016 series was even worse...

Even if the 2017 is 10 times better than the 2016, it's still terrible...

Never going to watch it no matter how much people tell me to.
I've already watched '97 series and three movies. They were really good. The 2016 series though? Bleh.
I started reading the manga immediately after I watched the first episode of the 2016 series.

5000 pages in one day. Totally worth it ( ̄▽ ̄)

I suggest anyone who wants to get into Berserk do the same. Watch the '97 series and movies, start reading the manga.

It's fine. I'm not a 'Berserk fan' so the 2016 adaptation was my first exposure to the series.

In that regard, I used to like watching people scream and cry about it, but now that we're here in it's second season I'm starting to wish people got over it already.

It's really not that horrible, you're all a bunch of babies.

Try reading the first 5 pages of the manga and you'll understand why everyone is crying over it ー_ー

The reception for 2017 is better because most of the people that hated 2016 didn't carry on. Tbh 2017 is worse because even though they're not blatantly cutting important source material, they are pacing it horribly; the animation is a little worse and the directing dipped down to horrible again after improving a tad by the end of 2016. The three big battles in the first 3 episodes were total jokes. Compare that to the climax of the 2016 show which wasn't optimal but was definitely better than the absolute drivel that was pretty much everything before it.

You don't even need to read the manga (unless you care about the story, but if you do then why'd you skip the entire backstory from the 1997 series and the movies?). Watch the 1997 show. While it cuts out some important bits of the source material (and notoriously ends on a cliffhanger), it looks and sounds gorgeous. The animation is rather cheap but the directing, art and sound are absolute top notch. Then compare to 2016 and 2017 and see where it all goes so wrong.

Or.... You can just read the manga after watching the '97 series (and movies too).

I think it's essential to read the manga. Unless you don't care about it all. Believe me it's worth reading it just because of the amount of effort put into it. It's beautiful.

The manga is definitely the best option but if you jump into a show's sequel with no context that implies a lack of care for the story.

It still looks as shitty as it did last year.
I mean to be fair there might be like a 2% improvement in overall quality.
So that totals up to "slightly less horrible than last year"

So yea as everyone has said when it comes to Berserk, manga is by far the best option.

BTW Berserk (2016) was no a complete failure. It had flaws but it was still enjoyable. People overeact.

The same as Berserk 2016. Not really good, but it isn't horrible either. The manga is playing in a different league though.

It's pretty good guys, it's EXACTLY the same situation as Kingdom, first reason was HORRID CGI but it went better and better from there until it became beautiful.

Also if you like Berserk there's just some scenes that MUST be watched as an Anime.

The movies are really bad story wise and animation wise, minus the last one, and like the last 30 minutes of the second one. The 1997 series is the best, but 2016 is pretty good after the first 3 or so episodes, and 2017 is really good, big improvement over the last series.

Dude, you must not have an eye for cgi. The framerate is consistent for cgi, the character models were all redone and look highly accurate now, and the movements are much more natural. If by "Still looks as shifty as last year," you meant "Still primarily cgi," then you are right, but just because it is cgi doesn't mean it's bad. In fact I think the cgi scenes are better than the 2D scenes so far.

How, in any way, is 2017 worse than 2016? Besides the bird flying at mach 50 over a weirdly animated landscape, the animation is better or just as good in every possible way. Like, literally every possible way. The flashback for Farnese and Serpico was in 2D almost completely, but it was a tad low framerate and a bit rushed. Low point of the new season, yet still not that bad. The rest of the season is amazing so far. Especially the Guts/Zodd fight, which showed me that the director is learning how to animate in 3D, along with learning how to treat a series with a tone such as this. 1997 is better, but this is still good.

The 2D is still very cheap and plagued by the horrible pencil filter, the pacing on the flashback was atrocious and cut out some important details. Not quite the low point of the series because it mostly copied the manga panels and was not a fight scene so the replication was altogether passable.

The Hill of Swords fight started off as a mash of manga panels without any sort of reason or rhyme to the point where it was nigh unwatchable, the repeated clanging made the scene laughable, the movements of Zodd in the latter half were like those of an action figure that has a badly implemented smashing function, the use of Hai Yo post-eyecatch was unfitting, the way the camera moved all throughout was ameteurish (though what's to be expected from this show at this point?). Before the fight started, the use of jazz while Guts reminisced on Griffith was quite the top kek.

As 2016 progressed, even if the models looked hideous, at times they could move like something vaguely resembling a human. In 2017, up to this point the only one that has any semblence of decency is Guts, who is about the only improvement over 2017. Puck also looks fairly decent but it's difficult to fuck up a chibi that doesn't have much screentime or wacky movement. Farnese, Serpico and Isidro all look terrible, Griffith is a fucking abomination, Locus is passable and Zodd is a travesty. On the plus side, Raksas is pretty good.

Griffith, besides the overly feminine lips, looks great so far. Better than the first shots he had in 2016. Honestly if his lips looked a bit more of a natural shade of pink and the shading was better on him I wouldn't have a single complaint. Also I think everyone in Guts' party except for Schierke looks good so far, but Schierke's character model will hopefully be redone. The placement of soundtracks was a tad bit of a mess at first, but it wasn't too bad past episode 1. The flashback was mostly accurate but made Farnese out to be less likeable, so new watchers might not really empathise with her like they should.

The colors in Griffith's hair are oversaturated, the armor is poorly rendered and his movements are stilted as fuck. Schierke looks ok up close but terrible from far away, and when super deformed she looks bad.

His armor is a bit shiny but armor is like that and I don't think his hair is too saturated. However I agree his movements are stilted.

I wouldn't go as far as to say they aren't worth your time, but the CG animation might throw you off. The movie trilogy is good and you should definitely watch that. The new anime that continues after the ending of the movies has some questionable CG and has received much hate. You should still check it out. But most people say that the anime is nowhere close to how good the manga is.

I don't care that much animation. I personally think Berserk 2017 is one of the best anime in this season.

And I say it is better than Berserk 2016, because we do see Griffith and his new overpowered army

If animation is that too important to you, they why would you even read the manga ?! The manga does not even have animation, colors, sound etc.

Maybe because the manga artwork is gorgeous ? And anime is a animation , so good animation matters..

The animation is definitely subpar. For me, the characters' eyes are flat and have no soul in them. Where is the rage burning in Guts' eyes or the mischief in Isidro's? It's like they're just going through the motions.

That said, I'm glad to see Berserk finally getting a closer to complete adaptation, so I'm willing to tolerate it. Hopefully, by the time they get to Elfhelm, it'll look better.

250 chapters in one day? Do you even have a life or a that high attention span? Holy.

Dude, it was one day, not a week or month. And yeah, I think a 21 year old guy will have a high attention span. I'm not a kid. And this is not the first time I've read something for a whole day. I've completed a 500 page novel before in a day.

Same me, i knew Berserk while i saw Berserk 2016 and watched it, and read to Chap 349

Damn you really must be used to reading as a main hobby. I envy that

Yeah, I love reading. I think you can say that my passion for reading is the same as my passion for watching anime and gaming. Which is a lot.

Read the manga. Watch the anime adaptation for the sound.

Agreed
This is still better than majority of anime this season.

I like the anime even some are critical with the CGI use. I find it the CGI quality acceptable though.

I was nothing until the moment I met you.

It pretty much has the same problems as the first season when it comes to visuals and sound design. I think the storyboarding is better though, in the 2016 series there were several scenes I had to rewatch to see what was even going on

IMO it's a little better than the 2016 version
