THIS IS AN ANIME ONLY DISCUSSION POST. DO NOT DISCUSS THE MANGA BEYOND THIS EPISODE.
----------------------------------------
This episode was quite interesting. We got even more talented witches making their appearances (some as judges) as we got the ceremony started.

As expected, Diana pulls off her performance with perfection and wowing everyone watching. Everyone is impressed. Hell I'm even impressed. Akko's performance with her friends was pretty entertaining with their "sacrifice". I know Sucy enjoyed the heck of that LOL

Surprisingly, they did pretty well in the end. Good for them.

Well a nice episode Ako didn't cause trouble this time and managed to give a very nice show but it seems Diana has some issues with it.
Well hope it's acknowledgement and not jealousy.
Guess time will tell.

Even Diana doesn't know right now, she just knows she felt something that she never felt before.

Pretty sure it wasn't jealousy, because the reporter told Diana she won the competition and she said "What about Akko's group?" Looks like the sacrifice wasn't considered part of the show, or something like that, even though the reporter admired what Akko did.

I think it was more awe, not just of Akko, but of magic as a whole. I think this is the first time Diana has seen magic that inspired her, whereas for her it has always been a responsibility.

I think Diana deserves more credit then she gets from fans. She is the one who the entire magic community has pinned their hopes on for her entire life. Last episode when Akko read Diana's diary, she learned that Diana is doing everything she can to figure out how to stop the decline. She is so far past her teachers that she has to do everything on her own, all while knowing full well how much ordinary people hate magic (having to move within that social circle). Akko is blissfully ignorant of all this. That, I think is what makes Diana so annoyed with Akko (previously). Here Diana is fighting against ignorance, fighting against prejudice, having to act far far more mature than her years, having all the responsibility heaped on her shoulders, of course seeing some gadfly, playing around (yes, Akko is studying, but it hasn't show up anywhere Diana would see it until this episode).

I think there was jealousy. Not just because Akko stole the show, but because she was more Chariot-like than Diana (didn't you notice Diana styled her summoning act after Chariot's performance?) and also because Akko is able to open her heart and inspire others, whereas Diana can't do that.

Of course, Diana has never felt like this because she has never "lost" to anyone before. And even if she got the title, she knows Akko did better. That hurts, just like it did back in episode 2 when she screwed up the tree and Akko saved the day.

You completely misunderstood Episode 2. Diana wasn't "hurt", she felt something else that she hadn't felt for nearly a decade. Go back and watch, listen to what Ursula says right before they cut back to Diana looking up at the tree.

The reason she didn't tell the teachers about Akko is because she knew they wouldn't believe her. And she didn't want to argue with them because she didn't want her feeling to be tainted by their doubt.

The subtle point they slipped through is that Diana is obviously a huge Chariot fan - she knew exactly how to pronounce the spell, which meant she had looked it up before. Diana's bitterness towards Chariot is because Chariot's disappearing had hurt Diana the most, because only Diana knew what Chariot really meant to a witch who loves magic.

So she is not jealous of Akko, she has hope for Akko. This was clear this episode when Diana waited behind the curtains for Akko to come. Had Diana not somewhat believed in Akko, she would have left with the other girls, but she stayed. And watch when Akko and her team get swallowed, Diana was even more shocked than Ursula. Diana had HOPED that Akko would succeed, hence her surprise when it looked as if Akko had lost.

This point was made clear last episode. Her lashing out at Akko was disappointment, not anger. And her disappointment was that Akko was (as far as Diana could see) failing to live up to Akko's self-confessed desire to be like Chariot. This once again showed both how much Diana respected Chariot, and her hope that Akko could become like Chariot.

As for Diana's inability to inspire others, that is not true. She has the respect of everyone at the school, even the cleaning staff (don't overlook that, haughty princesses are not capable of that). Watch her performance, she created a unicorn, that wasn't transformation magic (which is what Ursula does) - she created one as art. Akko inspired more humor than aesthetics - hence the two teachers were NOT amused.

You completely misunderstood Episode 2

I don't think so. I think your view on Diana is too rose colored. I think she was jealous. Both in episode 2 and in this episode. That's why she couldn't tell the truth in episode 2. This is Diana we're talking about. She corrects teachers in class when they make mistakes, and you want to tell me she didn't come clean in episode 2 because she thought they wouldn't believe her? Yeah, no. She just didn't have the balls to say the truth because her image would have taken a hit. That's why she didn't say it.

Diana isn't a bad person. It's not like she wanted Akko to fail. But she was absolutely sure she would fail nonetheless, and she herself would come on top. That's why when Akko pulled off that performance and stole the show in this episode, all of Diana's preconceptions and her pride broke down to pieces. That's why she was so confused.

Anyway, I don't have the time for an argument. Let's just agree to disagree and move on.

Yeah, yes. Again watch it. They said it was her, she said "no I didn't do it". Did they listen to her? No they immediately denied her and said "who else could do it" - not as a question, but a statement of fact. People like that cannot be talk to. Do you think if she said "Akko did it" they would understand? No, they would have laughed and if had she insisted began to doubt her. People ARE that way.

And Diana has lived her entire life knowing this. Everyone else is resigned to magic dying out. Not even the witches respect it anymore. Only Diana does. Diana isn't proud, she is lonely. You'll see this in the upcoming episodes. Diana is the one who needs hope the most, because she's the one who has been fighting (which includes learning languages that no on else cares about) the longest and hardest.

She stopped trying to explain herself the moment Finneran said "who could have done it if not you?" That's Diana's image, the image of a perfect student who never fails. She backed off and ran away after heading that, because she didn't have the courage to say the truth. Had she really wanted to explain herself, it wouldn't have mattered if they didn't believed it.

For what it's worth, I do think Diana's lonely. But that's because she isolates herself. She's too prideful and thinks she knows better and can do everything alone. And she was jealous as fuck.

Anyway, it's obvious we're not gonna see eye to eye so whatever.

Very good episode, for second time Diana has to take the credits instead of Akko while she feels guilty about it.

That hand at the end, TOO MUCH HYPE! Those cubes are similar to the cubed snaked from the red visions from the previous episodes.

Nope, seems not. I just think that such a stereotypical "proud girl gets humbled" character would be boring and if all this shows says is "faith is better than trying your hardest to learn things" it would be a stupid show.

Everyone praises Akko's hard work, and she does work hard and deserve praise, but it has been made quite clear that Diana works just as hard, her talent is not just reputation.

Effort should be rewarded (at least in this type of animation, if this was a grittier type of animation, then no it wouldn't, but then Diana would be the protagonist and Akko the antagonist).

I will admit I sympathize with Diana more than Akko. Akko has Ursula. Diana has??? Seriously who should Diana respect as a mentor? Her teachers? Her fellow students? Her mother, it seems, will be a hurdle both need to overcome (though I think I get the backstory there - mother a witch, father a tycoon who loves the mother, but doesn't respect her (or Diana's magic) - so the mother's bitterness will need to be cured), so no support there.

That is where I see the show going, and that would be far more interesting then Akko GOOD, Diana gets her comeuppance. At least to me.

The thing is, Akko tried her hardest too, so hard work isn't the issue here. It's completely a matter of attitude. Diana will get humbled (in my opinion) because she thinks she knows better and can do everything alone. That's why she doesn't have a mentor or even real friends. She isolates herself. And it doesn't matter if the circumstances and pressure contributed to make her that way. She still let herself become that kind of person instead of reaching out.

I am not discounting Akko's efforts. I think both of them are doing their best. But in this story, I don't think there is anything for Diana to be humbled about.

In this story, there is no pride in magic - that is what makes Diana tragic. For the teachers and most of the other students, Diana is just wasting her time. Learning Dragonese, learning useless spells, none of that really matters in this world. While at the academy, yes she gets some praise, but in this world there are far easier ways for her to achieve the same result. Every teacher at the school honestly thinks that magic is a waste of time, only Diana is still trying (at least to the general public, of course Akko is internally) to prove this is not the case.

1idd0kun said:
That Diana tries so hard is not something worthy of respect (for most people in this world), but far more people would think she is being pathetic.

This is because I don't think you get the world setting of this story. Diana focusing on magic is not a respectable activity in her world. She has far easier ways of achieving success. She could marry into wealth and privilege if she wanted to, without even trying.

But that is why she is tragic. She has alternatives, she could have abandoned magic, but she doesn't. That is why she is a good character. For her, being an expert on magic is not a feature, it is a bug, but despite that, she still tries. I agree that Akko is more appealing, but my sympathy is with Diana. All of society is against her, but still she tries. Let's pretend that Akko fails, then what? She could find a common husband to marry and be happy.

But that is impossible for Diana. Her attitude is "make magic relevant or die".

Akko's still protagonist. Thing is, she has no magic ability, yet is learning how to use magic, and is showing some progress, putting some heart into where it counts the most. What's keeping her going is the determination to be someone like Chariot, but as she goes on, she can only be the best Akko she can be and not Chariot, but I think I see it somewhere, someone who has a believing heart and passion. She's managed to unlock words, when it all got down to it. She has a role she doesn't know is going to be at play here.

As for Diana, what else could you say about her? Seemingly perfect in every way, but it's exactly why she's got all this pressure on her, which isn't good. Especially when she is trying just as hard as Akko, about this crisis with magic depletion from the earth. Thing is, these two has things that contrast from each other. Akko's born without aptitude of magic, but she has potential, and shows more heart and passion, learning from her mistakes as she goes. What Akko has, Diana lacks. For me, it's not about who protagonist and antagonist, its these girls own journey. I'm more inclined to Akko, because she represents having to put everything she's got and then some to make it all happen, and she has a role she doesn't know about. She'll struggle even more before it all comes to a head and accomplishes something not many people believe she could do.

I see it your way. She works harder and almost "since birth", she didn't wait to arrive at school to work. She is a studybug, one can even suppose she might have had no talent to begin with but studied so much, that she might have surpassed the teachers.
The fact she came even to the point of learning forgotten languages is a proof. You don't do that in a whim and without hard work, and you don't do that when you didn't already learn the most important languages.
Her room is full of books.

I will admit I sympathize with Diana more than Akko. Akko has Ursula. Diana has??? Seriously who should Diana respect as a mentor? Her teachers? Her fellow students?

I see her also as a loner (I love loners in general). Nevertheless I wonder why she didn't consult anyone about the forgotten book she read, not even Akko, who has chariot's wand. As someone noticed, she also should have insisted in episode 2 that she wasn't the one who saved the day.

That is where I see the show going, and that would be far more interesting then Akko GOOD, Diana gets her comeuppance. At least to me.

I hope too. I agree with you that Diana seems to be a tragic figure. I wonder why they put Diana in such a good light actually. Maybe it's to keep people like me watching! Ha ha ha! I do a parallel with Homura (another loner) who stole the show for me in Maho Madoka Magica even though they are different too. I always fear that they show her becoming jealous or bitter or egoistic or evil. So far they didn't. It's a good surprise. I hope it stays that way and maybe later Akko and Diana being both chariot's fans, they will talk to eachother and join forces. We'll see.

Other topic : I didn't understand why Lotte and Sucy didn't interrupt the bullies. On the other hand I'm glad the latters discovered she was the one doing the prank on them. I got triggered last week seeing Akko doing the joke hiding herself behind someone else identity. I hate this kind of cowardice. It looked like nobody noticed how wrong it was. Strange. I wonder what kind of education people receive these days.

Lotte and Sucy assumed wrongly that they could persuade Akko out of her plans but when they insulted them, the two realized that Akko was in the right and they want Akko to win because people like Diana's cronies don't deserve such a title and wanted to prove like Akko that they can contribute to the magial world.

Good ass episode again. Glad the pace picked up. Was starting to get tired of revived skeletons and charming bees.

The 180° in Lotte and Sucy's point of view seemed kinda odd, that's my only gripe with the episode.

Also, Ursula once again saves the day by whispering to Akko just exactly what she needs to do. Doesn't annoy me tbh but will MC ever find something by herself?

Takuan_Soho is right. Diana's love for magic is as pure as Akko's, and she's obviously a good kid who's taken up a bunch of responsibilities. The dynamic is not that unusual either: Akko is the main character with a hidden talent that everyone writes off as a clown, while Diana is the top dog who is able to see something in the MC early on and roots for her, but gets disappointed and annoyed when she screws up and doesn't take things seriously.

Diana doesn't seem to have any friends. Even her roommates are a couple of morons who suck up to her constantly. Rather than resent her, she would be the happiest person in the school if Akko got her act together, knowing that there's someone her age with as much passion as herself, who might be able to help her in revitalizing the world of magic - just like how they healed that tree together.

Well anyone disappointed we didn't get a new OP and ED this episode, I was pumped all week for a new OP and ED, oh well this is the official half way point and if Netflix breaks the season into two parts, it would be at this point that part 1, we will see.

Onto the episode, well I am proud of Lotte and Sucy finally setting up and having Akko's back, but disappointed it took them being the subject of ridicule for them to do something. So it is cool when people make fun of Akko, but when they feel the brunt of it, not so fun isn't it. Oh by the way Hannah and Barbara, I dare you to say that to Sucy's face, you won't, won't you, you don't cut the guts to do it.

Anyway the show is awesome, I am glad everyone got the chance to shine, even team Amanda their got their moment, and Constanze especially I just love her.

Am I the only who wanted the summoning to not go off without a hitch, I wanted Hannah and Barbara to screw up because they were to busy picking on Akko to actually practice, and Diana save the day which would have made her better in the judges eyes, so you accomplish that and give certain people a lesson, and also symbolism on she is carrying everyone on back. But that is all right, they got their come upping last week and still haven't learned, maybe someday. Maybe if Akko saved their worthless laughs they might change for the better.

Akko her attempts to humor everyone was awesome, I love mouse Akko and elephant Akko, I hope they don't get sued by Disney. I am glad the guests were impressed, I am not sure if they were laughing with her or at her, especially not sure about the other students, I think a lot of them might been laughing at her.

And the real form of the ghost, just me or does look a bit like Sucy, distant relative perhaps.

In the end, Akko doesn't win, but she doesn't care, she just wanted be the best witch she could be, she did something Shiny Chariot couldn't do, so they dq her, but in the end she won her way, she don't need their reward.

And the big debate what emotion was Diana feeling at the end, what did that mean. I think she is question her path, she always been straight laced, followed the rules, did what she was told, but sees Akko go against that, not followed the rules, and accomplish something good. I think that is what she is feeling, I don't think it is pure jealous. But I don't she knows how she feels, which makes it easy for somebody 'wink wink' to manipulate her to feel anyone they want her to feel. I hope they pull a Sasuke here, even though a evil Diana would be awesome to look at, no I don't want her to go down that path.

But great episode, worth the wait, and a big step of Akko's journey is complete, but those mysterious hands hints that her journey is far from over.

Diana never thought that Akko had potential. This episode makes it clear when she assumes, without any evidence, that Akko ran away. When Lotte corrects her, she not only tells her that Akko didn't run away, but also that she never gives up. This proves what Diana said about Akko in episode 12 wrong. Diana thought Akko was quick to give up, but it's actually the opposite.

One of Diana's issues, which this episode brings home, is that she's quick to make assumptions based on preconceptions instead of getting to know the people around her for what they really are. She always assumed Akko was a fuckup without really knowing Akko at all.

It's only now, in this very episode, that she's starting to see the real Akko. And it's a shock for her. She's confused to the core.

Stunning episode! Seems like Dianas character is about to develope. I was so happy for Akko at the end. Sucy and mushroom girl were also awesome for going with Akko even though her request seemed straight up dumb

Really liked this episode. Except that once again, everyone from the whole school has to shit on Akko and not give her the acknowledgment that she deserves, getting kinda annoying imo

Well at least unlike the race, this is a solo award, if Diana won which what all should assume happened, she is the only one who gets that honor, they don't get squad. That is the one thing that on my nerves about episode 3, those two good for nothing especially the mean training wheel gag, get to be in the picture and have that honor without doing anything but riding Diana's coat tails.

To be honest, it's implied that everybody including the judges minus the one from Luna Nova love Akko's show. Wangari even took the time to go to Diana and informed her about her winning as she didn't want ruin the victory that Akko and co truly earned. The entitlement of Moon Lit Witch feels more like an insult rather than an honor of sort.

Everyone at the end loved what she did. Akko didn't get the title because she broke the rules.

Very good episode. Definitely a sign of good things to come. I'm hoping this makes a dent in the progress in the show so we can move out of "CHECK OUT WHAT AKKO GETS IN TROUBLE FOR THIS WEEK!!" episodes because although some can be charming like the zombie episode, we're fine without them anymore.

This episode was definitely worth the wait for it. It was absolutely beautiful and marvellous.

Lotte and Sucy finally backed up Akko after hearing the annoying insults from Diana's snotty followers and their plan for the festival was easily the highlight of the episode. =)

Even though most of her animal transformations weren't perfect, Akko was in her absolute prime. Their performance broke the rules, but they easily won the crowd's heart that night. Although that meant Diana won the title of being the moonlit witch, it didn't feel like a victory whatsoever to her.

If only her and Akko were able to cooperate more and become friendlier to each other soon...

The end of the episode was interesting though, as it showed someone using a snake that can fly threw the air, who looks similar to the future vision a few episodes ago. It most likely is our main villain, but I'll wait for next week's episode to see if I'm right or wrong.

I enjoyed this episode. The main story was pretty enjoyable, but what really caught my eye was the world building. All these new witches flying in, some kind of prejudice against the headmistress, and WHO WAS THAT AT THE END, I haven't seen the movie so I must wait to find out!

Well you know if Diana is jealous of anything, it is that Akko she can carve her own path, her own legacy, while Diana no mater what she does, it just be expected and follow the Cavendish blood line. She is just going to be another great Cavendish. While Akko ironic she is trying to follow Shiny Chariot legacy just like Diana is follow in family legacy. Diana can't escape her family's shadow, while Akko chases and tries to be in Shiny Chariot's shadow. Diana can't escape what Akko seeks.

I mainly want to talk about Diana' feeling towards Akko's group's performance.

So, from seeing everything so far, I conclude that Diana is probably jealous of what Akko brings to people. Jealousy, is a very complex feeling, but it's a human emotion that we feel almost everyday. Jealousy is a thin thread between loving and hating someone. So, of course Diana doesn't hate Akko, however they share a somewhat one-sided(?) rivalry, so it's too early to say that they are as close as Sucy and Lotte are to Akko. That's exactly what Jealousy is though.

Diana is confused with this emotion because it would seem that she has always been put up on a pedestal by her peers and adults in her life, her nobility status and her clique definitely helps in feeding her somewhat unsure feeling of meeting someone that is equal to her. So, when she akko and them freed the wailing spirit, thus putting an end to the sacrifice ritual via changing something so big and drastic in the witch community, makes Diana's feeling that akko isn't a competent witch, that much harder for her to comprehend.

Jealousy is ugly, but it is sympathetic because we all feel that way some time in our lives, or even now. Diana doesn't know the feeling of someone doing better than you in class or anything normal like that.

Anyways, it was quite an episode. And I really can't wait for the new OP and ED next week. Also, Croix is possibly showing up as well. I hope we get to find out why Akko needs to unlock the the seven words soon, because that part is still left unclear.

Speaking of the new OP and ED, I hope in the OP, Diana and Ursula get some screen time. I need more that one shot of each. At least as much screen time as Lotte and Sucy, that is all I ask. And don't spoil too much like the new Digimon Universe: Appli Monster OP and ED.

Back to Diana, if we are going through a Diana jealousy of Akko arc, timing wise would be role reversal, I think episode 12 concluded the Akko is jealousy of Diana character arc. Heck she gained some admiration, so whatever Diana going through, Akko just experienced, so if anyone would understand it is Akko. We could an Akko / Diana "you're great, no you're great" argument.
