This depends on what you wanna gain from watching it.

Do you wanna understand the universe and it´s characters?
Then skip anything Anime related about Devilman and read the Manga (It´s a chore though, both Anime and Manga are unfogiveably slow).

Do you wanna be midly entertained watch some disturbing imagery and some bloody DBZ fights? Then watch the Ovas in no particular order. Preferably get a few friends together who have bad taste and strong stomaches get drunk and watch this Gorefeast. If you´re not easily disturbed get some Pizza and laugh your ass off at one of the most hillarious scenes in gore history.

Although people will disagree. The Devilman Ovas don´t tell a proper story.
It´s like watching Akira and saying the Anime is brilliant when it´s a 1 1/2 hour adaptation of a 2000 page Manga.

well, id say read the manga before watching the devilman ovas. its not like you generally need to, but do it.
it will be a lot more interesting watch if you know what its about beforehand.

if your going to watch the amon one, you will have to read the manga first or you wont get anything.

Not really, I only watched the OVAs and had no problem figuring out what's going on in them. It's all fairly straightforward. Naturally the source material will always provide more in-depth information but if you're asking if it's necessary to watch the OVAs, it absolutely isn't.

Hope you like the OVAs. They have some great visuals and animation. Make sure to get the 1080p remastered BD version. It's worth it.
I probably regret this post by now.

Honestly i want to understand it enough to actually have fun from something beyond the gore even tho i watch this mostly for the 80' 90's super violent ova's. I actually like gore so much i thought the second episode of genocyber and that legend of the overfiend didnt have enough gore at some point. Maybe theres some parts in the manga that i can read just to understand the ova's better withough getting a lot of spoilers?+the manga is pretty long

If you´ve watched Genocyber and weren´t satisifed I´d recomment you just to go over to Movies and watch torture porn like Saw.
I don´t remember Devilman to be in any way worse than Genocyber.

You can watch Devilman on an entertaiment basis without reading anything about it and completely avoid the Manga. There are just several scenes in each Movie dedicated to the Love interest Miki which have no purpose if you´re not familar with the Manga or the work. Too many plotholes and too many blanks, but they only become apparent if you start thinking about, if the material presented to you makes any sense.

Suprisingly even Violence Jack isn´t that bad once you get used to it with the exception of the Chainsaw scene. The only statement befitting of that one would be, "Well, there goes my innocence".The statement "This is imagery is to what Todd Mcfarlane beats off after work" was rightfully associated with it.

Why are we comparing Devilman to Genocyber, Violence Jack and torture porn? It's not just some trashy shit OVA with tons of Gore, it's a legitimate franchise. If you're looking for something bad and bloody there are much better(or worse, I guess) choices. Apocalypse Zero was pretty goddamn entertaining as a crapfest, for example.
I found the Devilman OVAs to actually be pretty good, especially the visuals were great. In any case you need the manga even less if you're just in it for the gore.
I probably regret this post by now.

I watched the saw and actually genocyber is a lot closer to my taste, i watched 2 episodes so far and the first episode was pretty amazing (for what im looking for) but the second episode wasnt really gory except the children brains exploding in the beginning (ofc im talking only about the gore its not as important as the plot and characters) . But again its not actually so much for the gore that im watching it for but sort of a compensation after watching to much modern anime. I sorta had to have this authentic 80's/90's ova feeling

I didn´t intend to downplay the quality of the OVA, but as you keep mentioning the visuals in all of your statements, you can come yourself to the conclusion what the most memoreable part of the series is.

I already mentioned that it has DBZ worthy fights in it and I couldn´t help but smirk every time I heard Franky´s (from One Piece) voice actor every time a certain demon opened his mouth, but outside of it´s visuals and it´s gore the OVA´s do not offer much. Devilman and it´s author Go Nagai were influential to the industry as a whole and I´m sure that even Toriyama was influenced at least partially by him given the fact that Nagai invented the ecchi genre.
But his writing can be sloppy at times and the shortening of the adapted material didn´t do it any favors.
