So the jsdf has been focusing on anime watchers in the past several years and with some good success and GATE itself is a pretty good advertisement (the author is an ex-jsdf official)

How will it affect the jsdf if most of their a people are otaku? (if they managed to recruit atleast 30K that's like 10% of their force)

lol

Oh please, the otakus would probably quit within a year after realizing that serving in a JSDF is not as fun as they think it is. They would also realize that the equipment that they are using are a joke compared to the US military.....Probably.

I think it would heavily affect the JSDF if a bunch of lazy otakus and NEETS decides to join the Self-Defence Force. They would think war is like anime and they would think a magical lala goddess would come to their rescue or something.

I mean, have you seen how the JSDF performed in the Middle East? Fucking terrible. They had to be protected by the New Zealand and British (or I think it was the Australian) army because of how poorly they fought back. Now imagine if those soldiers were otakus and NEETS. They would get massacred lol.

Serving in the JSDF is miserable, and it's a breeding ground for suicides despite Japan not fighting any war unlike the US. They wouldn't last long.

Mostly because of Japan's anti-military mainstream media. People over there see you as a loser if you join the JSDF.

Also they are not allowed to engage into Combat anyway unless directly threatened, means it was the job of the Australians from the beginning, to keep them out of the fighting so that they wont be forced to end up defending themself, in wich case, they would have needed to explain exactly everything, for every single shot fired.

It was the Australians. I had a good experience meeting and collaborating with the JSDF, traded a few shirts and got a JSDF bamboo fan. They are nice people. The JSDF that were sent were mainly engineer units, not many combat units. Also their combat units lacked sufficient firepower (restrictions) due to their policy. So it's wrong to say they preformed terrible. They were sent to support; that was their only objective, nothing else, so it's perfectly normal they needed protection.

Edit: Sorry, having net issues, this post should of been above RaiStorM's post, accidentally deleted instead of edit... go figure...

As for a response to RaiStorM, yes, that was pretty much their situation.

After reading your post, I guess it was wrong of me to call them terrible. I don't exactly know the full details about the JSDF being dispatched in the Middle East. I only know the gist of it. What I read was the Prime Minister dispatched the JSDF under the U.N Humanitarian Assistance. I read another article claiming that the JSDF did poorly in the battle. I guess the second article that I read was trying to bad-mouth the JSDF.

Oh and you served in the Australian army? I salute you o7

The media can intentionally or unintentionally bad mouth military operations regardless of country. Some may be due to lack of understanding, as in this case they would not know why the JSDF avoided combat and or hardly participate in conflict making them seen as incompetent (Also the fact that most of them were not even combat units). There are a lot of other factors that also comes into play, and the big controversy is not telling the media classified information. This can lead to conspiracies and wild speculations giving them the full range of wild stories. Nether or less, there is one thing we all know about the media, and that it dose anything and everything to sell their story/s click-bait and all. So next time you read any story good or bad, have an open mind :)

I am currently serving in RAInf in the ADF. Planing to transfer to reserves as I wish to further my studies. I really enjoy GATE because I can relate, though without the magical girls, loli's and fantasy :( . But it's also unique in the aspects of being realistic (to an extent). I also find the anime more realistic than the manga; most likely due to the person in charge being an ex JSDF. So in regards to your other statement, not all otakus are spineless haha. That is if the definition of otaku is similar to the actions/behaviour of Itami and or Kurata. As I understand the definition of otaku varies.

Well, you've seen Gate, right? The part where units callsigns are lifted from Fate/Stay Night? Or the part where minister of defense complains to an officer that he doesn't have much time to watch anime now?

Overall, you can't expect JSDF as it is now to fight an actual war, the kind where their ability matters. They don't even bother oppressing undeveloped countries. Even in anime, they're either being stomped by giant monsters that are immune to guns, or shooting up medieval armies who can't shoot back.

Ancient Rome-era armies actually.
But The JSDF should still be able to handle 3rd world countries regardless of their current situation. They don't oppress other countries because that is against their policy and international relations would be severely hurt if they do. Neighboring Asian countries would immediately complain against any 'offensive' actions politically or militarily.

They are lacking in skill, but they are still the world's 9th most powerful military even with all the restrictions.

They've shifted to a peace keeping campaign, so allot of people are joining to safeguard places in japan and not to do military operations in other countries.

Most American war movies are like that. They portray America as the saviour of the world from terrorists, China, Russia, the aliens, you name it and they are the ultimate good guys. This is why I don't care if the JSDF is portrayed the same way as the American military.

While I agree with you in spirit, all this animation really says is that any modern army would be superior to any feudal military. Even the "Red Army" or the "PLA" could breach that barrier. Nothing in Gate really says much about anything.

I kind of find it ironic...especially the speech that rory made during the press confrence how they try to bad mouth the jsdf as bad guys.

It is easy for people who live sheltered life to discriminate the military but when an actual crisis comes along they can't survive it without military support. what is even funny is that the author who wrote this being a former JSDF member himself actually predicted this.

After the Tsunami of 2011 along with the nuclear disaster of fukishima that followed it...the JSDF were highly praised for there excellent service in helping out during that crisis...so thankfully people have had a bit more of change of perspective to those that work in JSDF now.

Also now the JSDF are getting some much needed military upgrades these last few years. there air combat and reconnaissance forces are being replaced with the new modern aircraft such as the f-35 fighter and there naval forces are also getting better upgrades such as there new helicopter destroyers and there recently new Sōryū-class submarines fleet which pack quite a punch that are being built.

This was done after gate was finished and a lot of there military portrayal, vehicles, combat gear and strategies reflect of the current situation that was at that time and trust me a lot of their gear really was antiquated back than.

Also Japan is home to some very dangerous neighbors especially north korea and china and if a war breaks out from them...The JSDF are the first front line of deference. especially after the recent tensions over dispute of the Senkaku Islands and NK increase defiance over there nuclear program.

The only reason why the JSDF has shitty equipment compared to the US Army is because they are restricted due to their constitution. Now the Japanese PM is going ahead with his plan to re-militarize the JSDF. Which means a stronger army, new weapons, equipment, and etc.. I fully support the re-militarization of the JSDF. Hell, the US is allowing them to do this because restricting the JSDF doesn't make sense anymore. And like you said, the ongoing threat against North Korea and China. US needs someone to act like a "Police Force" in the Asian continent and that someone is the JSDF and the South Korean military.

Really? Advertisement for the JSDF? Can't we just have a story that just happens to involves the JSDF and leave it at that? There are a bagillion stories (anime/manga or otherwise) that involve the well-intentioned military, that doesn't mean they're all advertisement for the military. Almost all of the people watching this are adults, they can tell the difference between fantasy and reality. Well, maybe.

Why is is so surprising that there are otakus/nerds in the JSDF, there are such people in the US military. Not all otakus are the losers that you people know, there are plenty who are just like everyone else.

What does the US military have to do with this? Most foreigners don't really give a shit about our military other than our foreign policies, even if we do spend more money on it than the next 10 countries combined.

Now the Otaku(Specifically anime otakus)that join the JSDF definitely would be in for a hard time. But it wouldn't degrade the JSDF performance. Thsoe that can't handle it would be flunked regardless. Those that pass means more people join the JSDF. There isn't a negative.
The series would help expose the JSDF to a new group of people. That means more people will join. It's not like you are automatically qualified because I showed you an advertisement. You still have to past the exam so their quality wouldn't really get any worse.

Of course I don't think this series is an advertisement for the JSDF. But assuming it is or it ends up as one, it wouldn't cause any issues.
