I know it ain't done yet but i'm surprised it's rated under 8.

It's a good mix of action, drama and comedy.

the animation is good.

the soundtrack is very good.

the pacing is really really good.

i know it doesn't re-invent the wheel but we are talking about a classic tale. Look up "Androcles and the lion", it inspired a lot of artists and novels.

Seriously OP, MAL ratings doesn't matter in anyway. Forget about that and enjoy the show.

It surprises me that the ranking of the series has not improved with the episode 20.

Me too suprised. It is strange that there were not to many mentions of this show on this site. I discovered it by accident, while reading reviews of random shows. But this is one of the best series this season. And I think, that MAPPA is currently became my favorite studio (previously it was White Fox).

Two cour shows always receive nice jumps at the end of their runs as people who dropped it early their votes wont count. This will be no different. I would be surprised if this does not finish above or close to an 8, as long the ending is decent.

If they don't rush things, then I think an ending would be good, because source manga was ended years before. One major problem with this show, however, is that they have too much material to adapt in 39 episodes

I think its either the artstyle or simply the fact that it is a typical 90s shonen anime. I noticed that LN Adaption are often more successful than Manga adaptions dunno why but thats just how the current community wants.
For me Ushio to Tora is one of the better shonen Anime it has a good story and the atmossphere is captivating so after this season I will give it probably 9/10.

By the way, where is your signature from ?

The characters are pathetic and have no character development, story is bad and repetitive, art is bad, did not notice music so it's probably below average (I'm not taking about the OP and the ED). If I compare it to much better animes this season like Noragami (second season) and K:Returns of Kings (second season), both of them have awesome music during the episodes, it was awesome so I remember it.

The sole good aspects is Tora and the action scenes. The sole one who has any character development is Tora again.

I've watched all the episodes.

Because the majority of users on MAL don't like old stuff... even when it's made anew. :P

All snark aside, I definitely agree about the weakness of the storytelling. OP said it, themselves... it doesn't re-invent the wheel. So, even though it's a fun show, I wouldn't say it's much more than that.

In all honestly, I feel like most of the ratings on MAL tell me how broad of an appeal a show has... at least, in most cases.
The MAL ratings seem like they're mostly governed by the number of 10/10 ratings a show receives, and I've seen far too many users who give out 10/10 ratings like they're candy, without thinking too much about the good & bad points of a show.
So, if a show attracts these brainless idiots, then it'll get more of those easy 10/10 ratings... but Ushio to Tora doesn't seem like the kind of show that would attract such people, right?

Thus, we're left with level-headed users who will likely give it an 8 or a 7 out of 10; some people who have bad taste and will give it less than that; and maybe a few people who genuinely fall in love with it and give it a 10 or a 9 out of 10... but not so many as to make a difference.

Of course, there's exceptions to this... because when a show is actually really good, and it can get a 10/10 rating from a level-headed user, then the brainless idiots will give it 10/10 ratings alongside the level-headed users, thus boosting it even further.

So, essentially, the way I see it, there's four different tiers of shows:

- The shows rated highly by both idiots and level-headed users
- The shows rated highly by idiots and normally by everyone else.
- The shows rated normally by level-headed users, but not really rated by anybody else.
- The shows everybody hates and that everybody rates lowly.

Well, much of this is just conjecture, but... I think there's some of you who will probably agree with me.

Cause it is based off of an old manga so many parts of the storytelling are different from what is used in current anime/manga. Some of us will find refreshing and like the show while others will think that it feels dated or out of place and score it lower.

Ex. One of the biggest complaints of this series that i hear is the lack of character development in the main characters. This is entirely true. In modern anime it is common for your main characters to change and mature over time due to the influence of others and the story on them. When this manga was made though there was another popular option though, and that was a strong static main character that instead influences others and the story. That is the type of story this is. Unfortunately some may not feel that Ushio is a strong enough character to pull this off.

good theory. I don't really over-analyze characters like that. Especially in Ushio to Tora which is VERY humorous.

I didn't find anything not believable because the setting makes it possible.

I don't know what the manga was like but the pacing was very surprising for me. I like that it felt like a light episodic show and surprised me by goin into the main plot for a LOT of episodes after that. It was a good mix of everything for me.

i'm sad since the turn-me ayakashi isn't in this one _|D
i was really looking forward to him popping up again, when i noticed this anime had a newer version _xD

i liked the weasels in this one much more though, but the last anime wasn't more than 10 episodes, so-.....
......

i don't really care about ratings though,
Tora's too adorable being curious about modern society though, he's like a little kid _xD!!!

It doesn't really have anything going for it, unless you're into the old school artstyle. It's just painfully mediocre in every aspect with a concept that's utter nonsense.

is there some sort of story later on? In the beginning it's just monster of the week story telling, which I think is pretty lame (unless it's JoJo)

The story starts to come together and have more to it later on, having multiple episodes focusing on the same enemy, but it also suffers from a lot of illogical bullshit which happens just to make events happen, if that makes sense. Some of the motivations for what happens makes no sense.

I found it worth watching just for Tora alone. He was quite the great comic relief. It's also nice to see the rare male tsundere.
It's an entirely different kind of flying, altogether!

Why is this series limited to 39 episodes as of now (26 for S1, 13 for S2)? The manga has been long finished for two decades now.

I understand that MAPPA wanted to see if the anime would be popular, but if it's popular enough to have a 2nd season (and most likely more seasons), they can do one long running series w/o any fillers.

Western audiences, western tastes.
Plus the shows is pretty old, Watched the OVA's back in the early 90's the flying head episode was one of the creepiests, Considering Wasn't until people died by consumption that I found it slightly scary in my infancy.

Manga has long been finished. and the OVA' does go into the Hakumen arc at all from my recollection.

I was suprised to hear they were going to adapt such an old manga for TV in 2015.

And from what I have seen its good. Nostalgic due to OVA's But still fun to watch.
its nothing like Nura or Natsume, considering its all Yokai related.

In a sense Tora and Mayuko's relationship reminds me of Yusukes Yokai Ancestor from Yuyu Hakusho.

The rating's right where it's supposed to be for this show. I really do like it and all, but the pacing and story-telling does leave a lot to be desired. What's honestly attractive about the show, to me, are the art-style and the characters, even though they don't really grow (sort of--Tora has development, but not really Ushio), and I've enjoyed it for what it is. And so while it's a classic, it's not good enough to be up there with the greats. I think it's a good thing it's been coming out of obscurity, but it'll never get much higher than this. Where it is, however, is a good, comfortable spot that suits it well.

The protagonist is very generic and the only interesting character in the series is tora i don't know why I watched this but I felt shit watching the whole season 1 the only thing in the series that kept my sanity is tora because I was interested in his backstory and he's the only great character in the series this anime is not for everyone it's very generic and you should just watch something like hxh witch is light-years better than this overall this anime is Garbo and I the protagonist pisses me off every time he talks I hope he gets a nose job at the end of the series because his nose is seriously pissing me off

Bcs there's a lot of things to critictize:
1. Repetitive. I dont get, "this guy growing stronger" vibes. What i see is he only swing his spear anytime. Remind me of Inuyasha with his sword, but at least Inuyasha get a different technique/skill.
2. Some fights are unlogical. I know there's a lot unlogical fights in anime, but such uncomfotable for me to saw someone fights on the plane that flying in the sky, which actually can kill you bcs of air pressure or something (example).
3. They forced every character (especially the girls) to contributed in the couple last episode (ep 17-18). For me, its kinda cringe.

Well i think 7.5 rating is fair for this series. And i still love this anime tho. The best part for me is flashback arc (ep 19), and when seeing Tora interaction with Mayuko Inoue.
