Yes this is quite interesting
It would be if you didn't know about this (refering to Kumiko). I'm of the opinion that Reina knew of Taki-sensei through her father (a professional trumpeter) and she knew where Taki-sensei was going to teach. She knew how good of teacher and player he was. Thus she turned down that invitation to Kitauji to learn/study under Taki-sensei.
if you look at this, she rarely flinches or reacts to what he does. Which means she knows his teaching style.

Haha just by looking how many people commented on this ep, shows that it was amazing:) Well Kumiko in the beginning of the ep(boobs contest)so funny >o<
Of course Taki-sensei knows what to say in the end! Reminds me a bit of Kataoka-kantoku from Diamond no Ace...of course mean the speech :P

Kousakas smile was just beautiful..(I was like O.o... wahh...:D) and I guess after many stressful situations in her life, she already knows how to deal with them(when she suddently played). Thankfully everyone snaped out of it~~phuuu

I really like this anime, the graphic is wonderfull and the chracters are realistic and individual(mean the style), still I would like more personal development.

Tch!~~Kumiko clicking her tongue :P

It's these little things that make me appreciate anime over US animation. The US doesn't put these little things into their movies.

Actually the level of commentary is pretty average for this season. It's not even close to the most discussed episode this week. Even if it were just because something would get a lot of posting doesn't say anything about the quality of it let alone the show, just that people are posting in the threads. It doesn't even necessarily mean it's on topic. I mean Fate UBW gets 1000+ posts an episode and most of it is just pure grade shitposting and noise.

Yes they do, you probably just don't watch them. American movies cartoon or live action have tons of little visual and audio quirks to them.

Only because American animation never shoots for the level of realism a show like this demands.

I can see more in live actions since those come from the actors themselves. Animated movies, not so much. I've watched a fair amount of Pixar, Dreamwork and Disney. The details are more like hidden jokes or Easter eggs than putting in character quirks.

Asuka really hot! ... well all girls looked pretty in that band outfit!
And looks like Kitauji HS this time makes people notice them. A really new start from scratch to Kumiko.

This show has absolutely fantastic animation, especially the hair flipping scene. I really liked that one! I feel like a lot of the appeal for this series is due to its nostalgic nature of high school band, which I know a lot of people were involved in, unfortunately I wasn't. I still like the show, but some of its broad appeal is lost on me in that sense.

But I am learning more about band terms I've heard for years!

This show has so many little gestures and details that add that a small kick to the series. Most obvious was Kousaka's smiling scene and when she blew the trumpet (double layer animation), but also Asuka's gestures, Kumiko's tongue click and her slouching in the train among other things. Even sensei did a little pointing with his arms. Such things you can't capture with words and can only be expressed visually. I also love the guy characters in this series. XD

The change in characters are subtle and realistic, and Kumiko does great as narrator commenting on the change in atmosphere, etc. I really like that. And within the band there's still the desire to show up the sensei, but it really serves to motivate them. Kousaka breaking the tense mood was great, and how the spectators were beginning to notice their band made me really happy!

Also a bit of characterization on Asuka. She's strangely relationable. Competent in many aspects, but doesn't want to take that leading position.

The build-up and pacing is really subtle and gradual. Feels realistic. I'm hoping to see the band really succeed. :)

Pretty decent episode. But man, does the aesthetic stay gorgeous, especially during the city scene at night. Really can't get enough of how this show looks.

Hazuki is one of the biggest cuties I've ever seen. She's just a giant ball of adorable.

The marching uniforms on the girls were very cute.

Well, looks like Reina wants the D.

Yeah, this teased yuri shit is beyond annoying and it feels like it takes away from whats going on. Wish they'd knock that off. AS for the quality of the show, I'd still say it's just around average. Previous KyoAni works still run circles around this one.

Man, every time I listen to them play I get a huge hit of nostalgia and I tear up. I love everything about this show.
I also think Kousaka either didn't accept to go to Rikka because she knew about Taki-sensei going to Kitauji HS, or because deep down she wanted to be with Kumiko.

I feel you... Marching band was fun, but it's so hot... And on that second part, that's probably it. I'll be surprised if it's much different.

JPthugnificent said:
Ugh, this episode reminded me of my high school days when I was in marching band... practices under the summer heat was always killer, and when we had to march with our uniforms, it got even worse.

Not saying this was bad, just brought back some painful memories :/

Also, I see that they're not using the marching tubas. Which is kinda weird, since those tubas are usually the things that stick out.

Fun episode!

Yeah, I know, right? It's so tiring to march in the heat. Fun, but painful memories.... Oh, they weren't... I didn't even notice. How would that work? Aren't tubas extremely hard to carry, so we use sousaphones instead?

But that's partially the point of the anime, I think... It's about band. Of course the people who have been in band or are in band will tend to relate and reminisce.

She really is. Those maneuvers are actually pretty hardcore. My friend was Drum Major this year, and he literally practiced for hours to get that sort of thing down. And he still would drop it sometimes...

Usually competing marching bands would use converting tubas instead of Sousaphones. If they had marching tubas the why not marching baris and euphs?

No. I like to hear the other poster's experience with band, concert and marching. This show is hitting a lot of memories for many here. How can that be a bad thing? I'm have more memories of my years of marching (about a decade of marching experience in between high school, university and drum corps-junior and senior).

I've been seeing a lot of questions about why not much about SunFest. As I saw it, this wasn't about SunFest, it was about getting to SunFest. All the work and practice they needed to do to get their. I bet there is information online about something similar to SunFest online with videos attached to it.

This show is my must watch series for this season. Two thumbs up.

Just... Yes. To like everything you've said.

gandalf8 said:
The SunFes performance was also good. I wouldn't say they were amazing or anything, but it was definitely miles better than than the first time they tried to play in an ensemble in front of Taki sensei. Wish the performance sequence was a bit longer though, although its understandable they should save their budget on animating the more important future performances.

Definitely. Not amazing, but much much better.

It's just band. No orchestra. Orchestra (a full one at least) would imply strings as well as an altered band set up (not as many).

[/quote]Yes, this is a band/concert, not an orchestra. Orchestra would have mostly strings. A concert band may occasionally have a sting bass to help with the bottom. A band is multipurpose music group. As a past member of a concert band you do it all - concerts, parades, halftime shows, etc. Orchestras are mostly just the butt sitters. Many will crossover to band for marching band, either the woodwinds and brass for more instruments or added flags and rifles.

Cheesy high school bands have never been so good. Moreover the character designs in this show are absolutely gorgeous. Kousaka and Asuka specially. I think Kousaka is going to provide the dramatic content in this show.

The uniforms they have to wear are pretty ugly though compared to some of the other schools.
