I wonder how the part about Mana being turned into Akuma will be explained. For now it can be perceived as plothole, as we don't know how it was possible, if Mana by that time was already a one part of Earl and Allen being the other. Was it someone else turned into it? Or perhaps it was a fake memory. |

Wow. What a returning chapter. It pretty much lived up to everything I had imagined it would be art-wise and story/character-wise. Probably the most prominent chapter so far, as it really speaks to the title more than ever before. This isn't as simple as Allen having a Noah inside him while also possessing innocence. Now he's on the verge of awakening as a half of Adam himself, and it's looking more and more like he has the Heart. It doesn't get any more gray than that. Saw a theory on mangahere's comments that the current Earl is a kind of replication that Mana created(maybe subconcsiously, in a similar manner as the original Earl splitting into two due to the Earl's ability to create/destroy) to kill Nea, and that Earl went on to faithfully/robotically fulfill his Noah duties after Mana wandered off in his insane grief, probably not even realizing who it was when he resurrected Mana as an Akuma. And it wasn't until after he'd died and the Earl began to be confronted with the memory of Nea through Allen that he began regaining Mana's memories(whether Mana implanted the memories in him or just in the nature of Noah transferring process). So the current Earl is in theory both the actual Earl, and the real deal Mana as well. Or at least that seems to be the only viable way around the Akuma Mana plothole. I'd honestly rather it lean more toward the current Earl being a result of Mana being devoured by his Noah memory due to his conflict/feelings of betrayal, and 'becoming a puppet'. It would make the Earl's character feel less broken and jaded, and it's a concept that was hinted at in this chapter with Wisely. But, that doesn't leave an explanation for the panel with Mana holding Nea when the Earl kills him, let alone Akuma Mana. Of course, the only way to explain it is to have both, Mana gets swallowed by his Noah memory, uses his power of creation to bring about the puppet Earl so that he doesn't become the puppet, and deals with personality disorder until he dies and then puppet Earl slowly obtains his memories a la Nea-Allen(though obviously not the same process here). I just don't know if I like the option where a puppet Earl is created because it feels less genuine in terms of Mana's personality and memory resurfacing, but is there really any other way? I just hope if it is the case, there's a solid explanation behind it. If it turns out to be simple manipulation/distortion of Allen's memory, that will feel like a huge cop out. Though I have faith Hoshino-sensei has had the answers since the beginning, and that won't be the case. Gah this three month in between is gonna be hell, but considering what we've already gone through, and the kind of quality we can expect to get every chapter, I think it's not such a large price to pay. |

Now that was quite a comeback chapter! Though I am pretty happy that the series back finally, mildly perplexed describes how I feel after reading that chapter. While I definitely need to go back and reread a ton, I feel a decent chunk will clear up next chapter. It definitely helps coming to this forum to see what everyone else had to say. Definitely am looking forward to seeing how this twist unfolds now. |

It's finally back! But wow I'm confused as hell. So the Earl we've known all this time is actually Mana? How does this even work, didn't he fight against the Earl alongside Nea, and that he went crazy after Nea was killed by the Earl? Also as many have mentioned, who did Allen turn into an akuma at the start then? Although another thing I'd like to point out is we've never actually seen Mana's face without the clown facepaint, right? I thought about the clown not even being Mana at all, but then the musical score inside Tim used their made-up language. Which then makes me question how they even did that if Mana was the Earl all along. We see a lot of Nea's and Mana's interactions as kids as well, so then when/how did Mana start becoming the Earl? I'm not too sure about the beginning since it's been a while, but was our first encounter with the Earl at Mana's grave? I thought about him somehow reincarnating back into the Earl after his death, but then it brings me back to my first question how they co-existed during Nea's time. My brain's going haywire trying to think this through, still so many questions gonna be left unanswered for another 3 months, but the biggest one..... WHERE IS LAVI |

Hello everyone. I registered an account to discuss this chapter. I think I can explain what is happening, after thinking about it quite a bit. The first Noah, the Millenium Earl (true name Adam) has been around for 7,000 years with the mission/raison d'etre of destroying humanity. At the start of time, the Earl battled the Heart of Innocence (or its users) and won, wiping out humanity at the time, but for some reason also creating a new generation of humans descended from the 13 Noah. At some point, the Millennium Earl briefly came to question his purpose or mission (perhaps after meeting Katerina), and decided to disappear by fragmenting his consciousness into two main parts - Mana and Nea. This bumped the total number of Noah in existence from the traditional 13 to a total of 14. Mana and Nea were raised by Katerina as humans, but at some point after coming of age, Nea's Noah side awoke and he realized who he was. At this point the original essence of the Millennium Earl (the mission to purge humanity) re-emerged to lead the Noah, which now included Nea. (You can argue that this brings the total number of Noah to 15 if you want to include Mana, Nea, and the Earl, but Mana's Noah side/half of the Earl never woke up so you had 14 still). Nea as the 14th Noah decides to rebel against the system, wiping out all the Noah but Road (with whom he had a special relationship), and trying to kill the essence of the original Earl in order to became the new Earl and do what he wants instead. They keep failing, so Nea and Mana (still human) go on the run while fighting the Earl. Eventually Mana screws up somehow, and the Earl finally manages to kill his rebellious Nea fragment, and Katerina also gets killed in the process. Whether or not the Earl reveals Mana's true origins at the time, in any case Mana is driven insane by the whole process and goes on the run and becomes a crazy circus clown. Allen, a human friend of Nea's (perhaps an exorcist already, perhaps not), finds Nea dying and offers to sacrifice himself by letting Nea eventually resurrect within Allen's body. Nea imbeds himself in Allen, causing Allen to eventually lose all his memories and regress in age until becoming a child before growing older again (probably to mirror Nea being reborn slowly). General Cross also made some sort of deal with Nea - it is implied that Cross rationalized "the enemy of my enemy is my friend" and was an ally of Nea's since Nea was fighting the essence of the Millenium Earl. Cross knows about the deal between Allen and Nea (maybe he was even there at the time). By fate, Allen/Nea runs into crazy-Mana the clown, who grows fond of Allen/Nea and begins raising him...either out of instinct or because he really knows Allen is also Nea, or some combination of both factors. When human Mana finally dies, the Earl shows up and tricks Allen (not knowing Nea is hiding inside Allen) into resurrecting Mana as an Akuma/Noah. To the Earl's surprise, Allen has innocence inside him as an exorcist and slays Mana. The Earl lets Allen live out of curiosity (though later it's revealed that he let him live because on some level he sensed Nea inside Allen without realizing it). In any case, Mana finally being killed out of his human form and turned into Akuma lets the essence of the Earl transfer Mana back into his Noah origins, thus letting the Earl merge back with his Mana fragment. The human side of Mana loses all his memories and just becomes a walking vessel for the Earl fragment, his original progenitor. Eventually everyone comes to realize that Nea was sneaky and is growing inside Allen. What the Heart/the Apocalypse Innocence protector think about all this is kind of wrapped in mystery, but they seem to want to kill all Noah, meaning the 14th and the Earl both (the 14th is as scary as the Earl because the 14th can also pilot the Ark). The general consensus is that Nea really threw everyone (including himself) for a real loop by not only finding a way to become reincarnated, but by choosing to reincarnate inside the body of one of the Noah's enemies, a born Exorcist who fights for the Black Order. The Earl was already driven somewhat crazy 35 years ago due to being betrayed by his Nea fragment and being forced to kill part of himself (and maybe getting hurt by Nea during the fight too). He becomes more crazy after re-absorbing Mana, and then goes REALLY crazy when he realizes Nea is coming back, which triggers the dormant Mana to struggle to emerge to be re-united with Nea. In the most recent chapter, being re-united finally causes Mana to come out of the Earl essence's shell for a moment, after which Nea (still occupying Allen) reveals the whole backstory. So the Earl and Mana have a messy merged/split personality due to the Earl forcibly re-merging with his Mana fragment but being forced to keep part of Mana's personality, whereas Nea and Allen have a messy merged/split personality because the original Allen allowed Nea to reincarnate himself inside Allen, but this also gave birth to a new, younger Allen who grew up a second time from scratch and developed his own personality as an orphan and an exorcist. So both lead characters have duality, but for different reasons. Both characters have a human side and a Noah side (Nea is technically also part of the Earl, but is distinct as the 14th Noah because he awoke on his own and was killed, rather than being merged back into the Earl like Mana). Ta-da! |

It would've been easiest way to explain everything, but at the same time very disappointing and it would invalidate all that was known since the start of the series. So the biggest question for now is that how Mana was able to raise Allen and who was really turned into Akuma back then, if it wasn't Mana. |

Artwork looked great! However, I'm going to have to go back and read all 218 chapters now to remember what exactly is going on. Not too thrilled about being skull-fucked (Earl is Mana + Alan is Nea = Millennium Earl) and having to wait 3 months for the next chapter. Still, I'm glad D. Gray-Man is back! |

From what I've gathered: -The Millennium Earl was once a single person (as we believed for the entire series but was shown this is not the case) who was for whatever reason, essentially reborn into two different beings: Mana and Nea. -The Millennium Earl that we know is Mana, who we thought was dead. -Nea, the other half of the original Millennium Earl is currently being reborn through Allen. The biggest question that people have (at least for me) is: knowing that Mana is the current Millennium Earl, who was the Mana that was with Allen in his childhood? My theory is that Nea didn't exactly die and Cross may have had something to do with it. The Mana that was with Allen in his childhood could have been Nea a few years before his death where he did whatever to Allen to allow himself to eventually be reborn in his body. Since Allen pretty much has Nea's memories, it's a possibility that Allen's memories were slightly modified to the point where his memories of his caretaker were changed to make it seem that Mana was the one who adopted Allen instead of Nea. |

Probably will have to re-read last chapters again (and why not the whole manga?) to remember some stuff. Anyways, glad D.Gray-man is finally back!!!! |

The crazy thing is that this means that all of the things we've seen the Earl do in this entire series is him at half strength! I also really like how Cross' line about having to kill the one you love works for both Nea AND Allen now that we know the Earl is Mana. |

Do you know that according to katsura, Millenium Earl's design is a person in 18th century who looked like 50 and never gets old. In the story 35 yrs ago b4 this event and allen is 15 turning 16 and the noah is awakening. 15+35 = 50 :) is this some kind of relation or coincident |

One thing that I forgot and left out - Road (who is the only Noah besides the Earl who wasn't killed by Nea, and therefore the only one who remembers what happened) reveals to Allen that Nea was actually "fighting for Mana." So we have reason to think that Nea's rebellion against the Earl wasn't just a coup d'etat, but perhaps was done to protect Mana from the Earl somehow. Maybe the Earl was planning to re-absorb Mana, or maybe Nea just did it to prevent the genocide of humanity because Mana was also human at the time (despite also being a fragment of the Earl). On a side note, one might speculate that Mana was the humanity inside the Earl and Nea is the Noah part of the Earl. Hence why only one became a Noah, and why the Earl is now possessing Mana. We know the Earl has a human form because he uses it sometimes ("the Duke") when hanging out with the other Noah when they are manipulating human nobles. It's probably Mana's body. We also saw the Earl in human form at the sunset before he split into two babies. |

Ah, a new chapter. Nearly 3 years behind schedule but at least the author delivered in the end. Anyway, I always find sunset scenes taking place in wheat fields to be really romantic. Honestly, I can't find anything cooler than it. So Nea and the Earl used to be the same being? I think that explains some stuff, but I'm still very much confused. I guess we'll find out more in 3 months time? Hmm. |

so like this what Im (not) understanding.... mana and nea were once one being known as the earl. at some point mana came back to his earl senses and was forced to kill nea for whatever reason. mana falls into depression, ends up travellin around and finding allen. mana dies, earl revives him, new mana akuma attacks allen, allen kills him. - this is where my confusion lies. How did mana die and how did the earl revive him when they are the same person... |

Still didn't prevent me from dropping a jaw or 2 getting mindf***ed ever every other page XD @RandomTopic...ur analysis seems to be pretty damn good. But what is the Essence of the Earl ur talking about? I mean after he split into twins, are u saying there was still an Earl roaming around? That's the only part I couldn't get from ur explanation. Because it did say the Earl vanished here And 14noah said: The Millennium Earl being Mana and Nea was very much surprising and confusing but it explains why the 14th is technically not supposed to exist. Their are 13 Noahs but the Millennium Earl got separated into 2 being. My theory is that the Millennium Earl had the mission to deliver 'God wrath' thus eradicate humanity however he felt lonely and end up felling in love with Katerina or something. As a result of being conflicted, he was separated thus 'Mana' took the role of the Millennium willing to destroy humanity and 'Nea' took another different path. The only thing that is odd is the akuma scene with Allen so maybe the 'Mana' that Allen always knew was in fact Nea or that scene was just a memory manipulation. Yeah that's how I'd summarize my thoughts. Amazing come back chap :D Caterina was one hot chick :L And Dat long Hug while all the plot twists were happening was really nice XD |

This is left unexplained, but it does say that after Nea ascended to being a Noah, he was with the Earl and the other Noah for a while until deciding to rebel and to kill the Earl. Obviously Nea couldn't have gone to war with the Earl and tried to kill him unless the Earl (or some part of him) had come back. Remember that there is a picture in one of the chapters that has the dying Nea in the arms of Mana as the Earl gloats over them. |

Wow, finally some good news! Anyway, at first I was kinda having fun, saying "GAAAAYYYY" because of that long hug... Then I gone "What...?" Ok, to be REALLY honest, I´m not that surprised. Coming to think, it makes some sense when you think about the clown Mana being drawn to child Allen in the circus. But as usual, we got more questions than answers. Now, how both the versions of their story together connect to each other? Why the "Earl" had his memories changed? And why exactly the Millenium Earl was "reborn" into "twins"? Aaaah, my head. |

I just saw the news thread about sq.crown and came here to check if there's a new chapter. I'm legit so happy. This was my favorite manga when I was younger. This is the best thing ever. But onto the actual thing. It was really surprising that Mana and Nea were both the Millennium Earl. But it was cool. And it was nice to see "D." in their names. |

What the heck did i just read? I can not remember all the details too. But i remember enough to say i didn't see that one coming. Very interesting devolepment though... I'm soo happy her art improved. I was barely tolerating it because i liked the story so much. :) |

This chapter was pure epic, it explained a whole lot of things. Loved the new arts, Neah looked very handsome, also Allen. Nice to see Tyki and Wisely after a while, it was funny when they realized they lost the Earl. I can't help but imagine their reaction if they watched the reveal between Earl and Allen. So, just who is Allen? And who was the Mana that was killed? Such a long wait till next chapter!! I m probably gonna read this chapter again and again until i get tired of it. |

Well, it's heavily implied that when Mana and Earl appeared at the same time, the Earl's costume was empty Plus, the original Mana was maybe splitted into two - Adam and Mana Walker. So just one question. What will happen to Allen's poor heart? |
