Some anime adaptations of games or game series basically require you to have played them or at least have adequate knowledge of them. Others are either independent or adapt the game material well enough that it tells you everything it needs to.

So does this one require any prior knowledge? I haven't actually played BlazBlue.

I'm not sure yet at the moment, though one of the VAs said in BlazBlue Radio show that it will be easier to understand the plot for first time viewer by watching the anime than it was for the game player playing the game for the first time.

From what I have seen from the first episode it actually gets you quicker into the story than playing the game does. It is a complex story so expect a few episodes before you understand what is happening.

A lot and the anime does a horrible job explaining things (to be honest it doesnt even try), however its true what DJIzzzyIzzyHitler said, CTs story was convoluted but still managed to explain things a lot better than this anime. I really should make at some point a thread to explain the setting and backstory of blazblue.

...that you should probably play/check out the game (at least Calamity Trigger) if you want to make any sense of what's going on.

No disrespect towards the animated adaptation, I'm glad to see it actually happening, but the story-telling for its first run, in comparison to my first run through the game, was...atrocious. I mean sure Calamity Trigger confused me at first (naturally it made sense as I progressed through the game) but this pilot episode was just all over the place. =/
Will I fall in love someday? I wonder?

I think the game will just give you some spoiler, so if you haven't played the game yet(like me) don't try to play

Most of people watching this anime have played the game such as myself. This anime for the fans not a fan or never played Blazblue there's the door.

Anyways. Check out the game the anime isn't a good adoption. The character details are off. The story is blah in anime.

ok 2nd post and i realize this is getting redundant but calamity trigger did not have a good story but it set up all the ground work for continuum shift to actually have a good story, this anime is not doing any of that ground work and seeing how its possible this anime might be dumb enough to cram both games into 12 episodes then we can expect this to get really convoluted, Calamity trigger in 12 episodes sounds perfectly fine as its a short ass game but continuum shift needs 24 episodes alone or some serious rewriting in order to fit all the stories into 12 episodes, and this is one of those cases where if you dont have every single character's story told, things dont add up

People, people; there's been a -single- episode and you talk as if you've seen the entire series. There's no way you already know "how the story telling is" in the adaptation if you've seen one episode. Most first episodes don't bother 'telling' the story, and instead INTRODUCE the story, world, characters, style, etc.

The point of a first episode is to net your interest into watching the rest of the show. If it gives you everything in the first episode and doesn't leave you wanting more, then you're less inclined to come back.

And to answer the topic's question, the anime essentially started exactly how the game did. In fact it's almost as if it was pulled straight from the game. You don't really HAVE to play the game to get it, though I imagine there may be some fan service for those who 'have' played the game. I do, however, recommend that you give them a try. They're very good fighting games.

Okay, huge fan of Blazblue series right here. Now I've watched the first 2 episodes and they are sweet, you have no idea how long I've been waiting for an adaption of this fighting series. That being said, if I never heard of Blazblue I would have no idea what is going on in the first 2 episodes. So to answer your question, so far yes it does seem like you have to know the source material instead of just jumping right into it.

Wished they opened it up to casual viewers imo, but it can't be helped 'cause it's only going to be a 12 ep run. I'll still definitely enjoy it, however, I can't say the same about you or anyone else that hasn't played Blazblue.

I guess so? It's not so much that I don't get what's happening, but it just feels chuunibyou as fuck with all the jargon and flashy designs. Some prior excitement might really help you enjoy this.

Hmm...so I've watched 3 episodes with no background in BlazBlue and I'm still totally lost. The anime doesn't attempt to explain anything- just kinda jumps right in to the middle of the conversation and drama. xD So lost.
