THIS IS A MANGA ONLY DISCUSSION POST. DO NOT DISCUSS ANYTHING BEYOND THIS CHAPTER.
----------------------------------------
A Local Princess here at MAL informed me the other day that she considered my early summary previews of Dusk Maiden of Amnesia "lame" and that it was bothersome to her to scroll past them once she finally found read the fan-translations on line. She wants to read "interesting discussions" here instead. So instead of a detailed summary of Chapter 38, which came out on October 22 in the November 2012 Gangan Joker on pages 57-78, I'll put down a few comments and speculations.

The chapter appears to continue to be told from Yukariko's p.o.v., as we don't see any sign of spectral Teiichi. Things are getting worse - their mother dies – and we see the significance of the comb. Finally, it comes to the point where the Villagers demand that the Kanoe family pay the necessary price to appease the mountain god – a price in blood. And the chapter ends with Yukariko asking Yuuko if she can sleep with her, then smiling while she thinks to herself that she will accomplish the necessary public duty.

So the chapter is rather short, but at least that means that Meibii made his deadline and the illos are all well done, albeit rather dark, which is appropriate for the dark tone the story has taken. Along with there being no Teiichi, there is also no comedy and no fan service. Yukariko looks like she has gone totally off the edge.

The thought that struck me is that if Yukariko was willing to use her older sister as a sacrifice to appease a god, and then kept that secret for 60 years, she might be willing to sacrifice her granddaughter now to keep the secret a secret. Kirie may well be in deep trouble once her grandmother finishes the story because she will now Know Too Much.

Yukariko is really starting to annoy me, feel bad for Yuuko, everything is pointing to her dying because she has a stupid sister.

That look in Yukariko's eyes, I swear she is going to see Yuuko out and her last words in this chapter sound suspicious. Oh man, it's going to be painful to see Yuuko die again.

Oh boy, I hope that won't happen.

It's remarkable how totally different the anime's perspective of the flashback was; but both are done extremely well. ^_^

I think you see it the wrong way around. "I will fullfill our duty" could mean she wants to be the sacrifice. Maybe Yuuko notices and stops them at the last second and get's sacrificed instead

Hmmm - I interpreted her smile as being malevolent, not a martyr's smile...

I guess that we will see at month's end which of us is right... <g>

Please continue to write detailed summaries if it's not too bothersome for you.

Directed to those, who find that to be 'lame' - how about you funny people step up and write it right here so we can have a nice little talk about it?
It's unbelievable how some spoiled kids try to act tough and that way ruin everything for interested readers and fans of the manga.

Now two things about the chapter I'd like to mention:
- Fucking superstition at its worst. It makes me sick when I see such disturbing cases of it.
- Yukariko's smile at the end is quite the ambiguous one to tell the truth. It could either mean that she's planning to sacrifice Yuuko or- and that's what I believe- she *is* in fact planning to sacrifice her elder sister but will prevent herself from doing so in the last moment with the intention to die in Yuuko's stead. But then her kindhearted sister will push back the silly Yukariko and sacrifice herself. The guilt resulting from that incident will eat up Yukariko and still does to that very day on which the story is being told to her granddaughter.
The release of atomic energy has not created a new problem. It has merely made more urgent the necessity of solving an existing one. - Albert Einstein

I am also reading it in Japanese, legit too as I buy Gangan Joker. Looking forward to comparing notes with you.
Superstition wow. Wasn't even supposed to have taken place that long ago!

Cool - maybe we can take turns.

I just received the December 2012 issue and as luck would have it, there is a filler chapter instead of a story continuation. Do you want to summarize it for the folks here?

Damn that Yukariko. We do know she killed Yuuko but it's just a matter of when? Was the last page of this chapter the final act? Who knows. It seems to be that way though.

It's incredibly scary what's going on. I wonder if Kirie is in danger now that Yukariko told her she killed Yuuko.

No wonder Shadow Yuuko is haunting Yukariko. Just as she told Kirie, she seems to have played a leading role in the death of her loving sister Yuuko. My opinion of her is changing now that the truth is slowly being revealed.

And the darkness is still yet to come.

I don't particularly think it's a curse alot of diseases can pop up with no cure. Though saying thatIi just love how everyone in the past memories were so scared shitless to the point they'd do a sacrificial ritual. Though the sister in the previous chapters showed sadness and remorse for what happened to Yuuko ; just reading this chapter I started to think she's an unstable person who should retire from her job and should stay at home with a house maid looking after her.

“Girls can wear jeans and cut their hair short and wear shirts and boots because it’s okay to be a boy; for girls it’s like promotion. But for a boy to look like a girl is degrading, according to you, because secretly you believe that being a girl is degrading.”—Ian McEwan, The Cement Garden (1978)

Loved this chapter.
I want to know what happen right after Yuuko was sacrificed.
Did the deaths from the disease stop?

If they didn't everyone would feel like shit for killing her to no avail.
