Really loved the artwork, just looked very realistic. Sort of like Sakamich no Apollon. Looks like they are gonna have a decent pace, which is good.

Shoujo is basically female wish fulfillment though. Shoujo romantic plot devices are even more ridiculous than what you see in shounen harems.

From the shoujo I've seen, their cliches aren't as bad as shounens. Shounens are hilaribad. And harems aren't even close to comparable.

Shounen romances have their wish fulfillment too, although it's certainly not the same types that are in shoujo. There's also plenty of shitty tropes on both sides.

It only seems that way if you buy into emotional pornography (empty melodrama). 90% of shoujo are basically the exact same romance story with superficial differences, and there is very little variety when compared to shounen and seinen, though shounen is also fairly repetitive. Not to mention that non-anime/manga female oriented stuff like Twilight and 50 Shades of Grey are arguably the worst fictions in existence, and shoujo uses many of the same tropes. Also, shoujo reverse harems make crappy shounen harems look good in comparison.

I know shounen has it's wish fulfillment stuff too, but shoujo is an entire super-genre devoted to wish fulfillment (this fact also tends to get ignored when looking at shoujo). That's not the case with shounen since romance is only a sub-genre of shounen.

The directing in this show is great. You can really see the director's previous work on the ABe shows in it. I'dl watch it for the directing alone, but the story seems to be entertaining as well.

^^Isn't the same with shoujos? female lead gets the most bishi guy from the school for an unknown reason. Same as with shounens.

Pretty generic, but the art is pretty good.
Now lets wait for the bitches complaining because bishi#1 likes the awkward/anti-social girl. Also the top girl, like a model or something like that to put her eyes on the bishi.

As long as the drama isn't that much it'll be fine, the main girl is kinda cute, same as Asami.

I'm being serious. Most standard shoujo have the same "main girl and bad boys" cheesy romance with very few exceptions. Then there's the mahou shoujo sub-genre which is itself very stale. And ironically the best mahou shoujo series are shounen/seinen ones like Nahoha and Madoka. Shounen gets repetitive too, but overall it still has much more variety than shoujo does (Death Note, Nougami Neuro, etc). Even more generic shounen are still more varied and innovative than generic shoujo.

There aren't any shoujo that can compete with shounen and seinen greats like Hokuto no Ken, Dragonball, Hunter x Hunter, Fullmetal Alchemist, Samurai Deeper Kyo, etc. Even Sailor Moon which is by far the best shoujo series doesn't compare.

technically natsume yuujinchou is listed as shoujo, so there goes the variety....

This is one of my most anticipated shows of the season--I love the source manga and this first episode didn't disappoint. While it bears a superficial resemblance to Kimi no Todoke, I think Mei is a much stronger character and as we find out more about the main and supporting characters, you'll find that she takes a much more active role in resolving the plot obstacles. I'll be interested to see how they handle some of the relationships in the show since some characters are sexually active.
Please don't feed the trolls!

I didn't really like the first episode. If Mei has been alienated from other people so much, how could she even talk that much to a stranger? Mind you but this guy was the most popular guy in the school. It would make sense for her to despise his kind since those kind of guys are propably the ones that fit her category of "people who betray" since he is a "player".
I'm really going to question the next episode if she won't get pissed. That was an ultimate player move on his part, she should be furious.

Actually because of this first episode i went to read the manga but itw as a compete let down for me. This first episode had a lot more drama built in, the character designs were awesome while in manga were kind of sloppy. And there are some particular scenes that I loved, put up together with the music, that made this anime vry special. Like the scene where Mei was listening to music on the way to school. You know that kinda made up her entire personality of a girl who shuts herself in and ignores the otehrs... all these made me care for her, but in manga I couldn't find one single point to relate to Mei. I guess the manga is after all targeted at younger girls but still lacks the depth of the anime.

So yeah.... very very good job for this first episode. I loved it though it's definitely not my kind of genre.

I've only watched a few shoujo but they all seem the same. Lonely girl with no friends somehow gets the attention from the most popular guy in school, topped off with a kiss barely a few days of knowing each other. It's the exact same as Tonari no Kaibutsu-kun which is airing this season except the male MC is much more callous. Fuck, even the thing about the dead rabbit when they were kids is the same.

I guess the viewer is supposed to see themselves through the female MC. Since something like this doesn't typically happen in real life they can get imagine this is how life would be if these things did happen.

That said, I like the character designs and music. :3

Not every shoujo is the same though. It just is something that is aimed at girls but that's really where the similarities end. It is however true that there are cliché things in this genre, but that's really true with everything.

Sukitte is still ongoing and the scanlations are quite behind, but I think this story is not really that cliché and a lot of things are pretty believable. Actually I was kissed before to avoid stalker before. Though it was by a girl, haha. Anyways, the cliché I really hate is love triangles. Seriously. WHY. So I hope the anime gets chance to get more of character growth and development for Yamato and Mei instead of focusing on the outside..problems too much.

By the way, my fave shoujo series is Natsume Yuujinchou.

NY is basically a shoujo/josei in name only which is why its quality is way better than what you usually see from the genre. It's actually written more like a seinen.

But, my friend, fanservice shows for males and females will always outshine these in sales. :/ Already these shoujos are doing horribly on amazon.

I beg to differ. Please do read Joou no Hana and come back and tell me that the manga is wish fulfillment for females. Really, please do. XD Joou no Hana is amazing!

What I mean is, the popular ones are always wish fulfillment for some reasons. You should read shoujo manga like Joou no Hana, Sekai no Hate,Akatsuki no Yona(don't let the first chapter fool you....you will be mindf*cked at the end of the chapter).

You should especially read Heroine Shikaku. Its a manga which like makes fun of other shoujo manga. Basically, the the shoujo 'rival' is the protagonist. Its annoying first but you'll come to love it.

And now I'm getting off topic. XD

There are exceptions to most rules. Still doesn't disprove what I said.

Besides, most of the few good shoujo and josei series borrow heavily from seinen and high-end shounen elements, which pretty much says it all.

Out of all the new anime I am watching this month, this anime has so far left the best impression on me from start to finish. My only criticism would be that the sub text is too small for my eyes which sucks so I hardly have the time to read the conversations but I'm not lost yet. Anyways looking forward to the next episode!
