Yet another frustrating episode.

I'd say it's the weakest of all to date (hopefully they'll manage a decent finale next week). Little plot advancement, little character development, little artistic merit (to the point of making Murasaki look almost uncute): what's left is a good measure of mindless shounen-like action and Lin Chenshin turned into a shallow "last boss" character. I liked how the novel stayed away from moral manichaeism. Plain evil Ryuuji aside, it was all shades of grey.

Those last few episodes have been disappointing in this regard. That, and they're a bit of a challenge to the viewer's suspension of disbelief. I'm not sure what they tried to achieve by rewriting the ending that way.

This episode more than any other proved to me this series needed atleast 14 episodes to wrap up well. The entire episode seemed very rushed. One second they're preparing the boat and the next it's broken in two and they're in the middle of a fight? Not to mention how quickly they got into the Inner-Sanctuary. Pacing just felt odd.

Seeing Benika get beat up by incest-lolicon-brother Ryuuji was a little frustrating. I yelled "oh, come on" out loud at the screen.

Overall, my pick for least favorite Kure-Nai episode. I hope the 12th and final will do this series justice, as it's easily my favorite of the season.

Perfect episode before the ending. This is a very good built up for the climax in the next episode.

I feel like something was missing in this episode. Though I enjoy the fighting scenes. I wonder if Shinkurou can really defeat who he's about to face. Can't wait for the final episode.

I liked Yayoi and Lin's fight, but other than that...

Chicks fighting in high heels irritates me.

Also, Benika, Murasaki and Yayoi should just have their own anime and there should be no elbow-blades or Kurenai involved.

Frustrating episode, indeed, but I thought it was much needed. They pretty much covered all of the plot in the previous episodes, so all that is left is the battles, so that's pretty much what we should expect. Though I do think, given the previews for next episodes, the father will definitely play some kind of role towards the end. I'm still not entirely convinced that Murasaki is going to be freed, but I am anxiously hoping for a Ryuuji vs. Shinkurou showndown.

And seriously!!! Will Shinkurou man up and use his bone technique he's got? I understand the need to be stronger without it, but if it doesn't have a huge negative side effect (like death to oneself), given the situation he's in and the person he wants to rescue, I think its high time he uses it.

I'm a bit disappointed in how Shinkurou has progressively gotten worse at fighting threw out this series. He started out as an amazing fighter with emotionless attacks. Now hes like a typical street thug swinging all over the place hopping to get a hit. You can see how sluggish his attacks are when he's fighting with the weaklings at the boat compared to Yayoi and Benika.

I was also a little disappointed in Shinkurou not even using his blade. I would have expected him to use it once but apparently their saving it for the end...at least I hope so. If he doesn't use it at all then I'm gonna be pretty pissed.

I'm still liking this series even with the lack of Shinkurou badassatry.

Good episode, it still amazes me that Shinkurou doesn't whip out the bone sword and kill these people, other than that the fight scenes ruled. I can't believe there's only one more episode.

The episode was alright but definitely the worst of the series so far to me. Fight scenes were alright but as somebody mentioned before the pacing of the episode was off, which I understand as they are trying to set everything up for the finale, but it was still a bit of a mess. I actually went back in the file during the boat scene because I thought I had skipped something somehow. Hopefully the finale is great because I really do love this show.

Also I was amused at Benika's death threat to Shinkurou if he threw up in the car.

Also, I think Shinkurou should have used the bone blade against Lin, it was a bit frustrating seeing him just get beat up =/

There was so much awesome in this episode that it dragged it down a bit. A 13th episode to this series was really needed to wrap things up nicer. Still, it's been a good ride. Can't wait for the last episode.

Yeah, I tink so too, the fights where awesome because they were so realistic.
I wouldn't have thought that they are running back and forth... I thought they would just rush in and then there would be a final battle xD, but that is what makes it so awesome

Looking forward to what we will get in the last episode...

I liked this episode too, because of the fights, which was all this episode was. Out of the series, this is my least favourite though. The pacing did suck, but that's because of the 12-episode limit. What's up with that anyway? It does feel rushed. There are three different antagonistic 'boss' type characters and Yayoi is injured/unconscious. That leaves Benika and Shinkuro who are both no matches for them (oddly). I mean, Benika is supposed to be nearly flawless in fighting. I can't believe that fight made her look weak. As for Shinkuro? Was there really a time when he was good at fighting? I'm starting to really forget. Anyway, I hope the last episode can bring some justice, but I have a feeling it will be disappointing.

No way,,im just thinking the opposite, that is what Kurenai is all about, i like this pace very much,, cause it is what makes Kurenai unique, it is all because of the different flow that i was able to keep my attention on it throughout this episode, they dont bother us with little unnecessary details, such as going on the river by the boat looking at the scenery, hearing the guards footsteps for a while,or Shinkurou's thinking back about all the past good memories with Murasaki ,but instead, they provide us the important moments with a unique style. I dont believe that they rushed this ep. at all, or this was done due to the incapability of wrapping up the story in flutter. Anyways, this episode is by far one of my fave episodes in Kurenai so far, i hope they will be able to make a coherent final to live up to the beauty of the episodes aired up to now...

Very conveniant Kurenai fights like a 'badass' for about 9 episodes then suddenly fights like a pansy against bodyguards who inexplicably arent carrying any guns.

Also inexplicable is the lack of father/daughter theme between Kurenai and Murasaki to contrast against her brother's relationship with their foster mum.

Why are the Kuhoneins even the way they are anyway? Have we had an explanation or is it just a quirky tradition we're not supposed to question?

I really shouldnt be thinking so much about this. ¬_¬

"Oh lets go all the way to the inner sanctuary, get our asses kicked and run away again!"
"Once we run away again I'm gonna have some sort of resolve and go in there alone! I'll definitely beat them now!"

...damn that resolve bull crap thats in every shounen anime.I must admit though, the trees and the snow were pretty nice.

I think they vaguely explained that Kuhouin's couldn't reproduce with people outside of their bloodline. How they found this out, we do not know.

Couldnt or didnt want to? I've just been assuming that they dont want other blood in their lineage.

Oh God, please dont tell me they're incapable of reproducing with other people, because that makes the depraved Kurenai/Murasaki pair up even more disturbing.

I barely remember and may have repressed it. I think they did mention "couldn't" the last time they explained WTF is going on with the Kuhouin's, maybe two-three eps ago.

It's also based off of a novel, I think someone in the forums here had read it and mentioned in the discussion that it's only the men who can't have children with outside women. Or it may have been another forum.

Edit: Sutiivu apparently remembers!

I thought this episode is amazing, however I still think we are going to have a sad or bittersweet ending. It certainly won't be 100% happy.

The fights in this episode were amazing and I didn't find it to be rushed at all. Also, Kurenai rushing in at the end by himself seems silly since he just go this ass kicked with Benika, but maybe now he is thinking "screw it, I'm using my arm blade".

Can't wait for the finale.

That makes sense since royal families did marry within their bloodline.

It was a decent build up to the climax, but I think it definitely could've been better. I wasn't very impressed aside from the fights which were pretty good, but hopefully the finale will be good.

Oh, and Benika got a lot of air in that last scene with her car in the snow, I wasn't quite expecting that xD

Can't even find the words to describe how good this series is. More than perfect episode too to build up the suspense and prepare the grand finale. The pacing was extraordinarily good and the development is just right once again. The last sequence of the episode was incredibly well directed too, with Shikurou on top of the cliff above the Kuhouin's residence in the snow. Makes me think of Takeshi Kitano films... Kurenai is actually much better than any series I've watched since Gankutsu Ou in the sense that it doesn't feel like a series at all, but the production values are close to that of an animated movie, the writing values are close to a very good novel (and I mean more than a basic light novel) and the art values to that of a movie directed by a great Japanese master. BY FAR the best anime of the last couple of years.

It's a shame there are only 12 episodes though, but I'm pretty certain the end will be as perfect as the series was.

Yep, thats what I was thinking, they're like royal or something, but the viewer has yet to get any coherent idea of why these bad guys are the way they are, (much like those laughable terrorists who kidnapped kids for no reason other than its soooo evil), they're just sick for the sake of being sick.

Please, everyone go back and listen to the ridiculous sound effects in the fight scenes, especially when that lady gets stabbed. Close your eyes, what do you hear? Thats right, a couple tons of fish guts being dropped from 50 feet in the air onto concrete tarmac. I laughed so hard.

Why? Did everything in the past make sense? I don't think so. Royal families had their tradition, and pride to protect their pure and clean blood by not letting a filthy outstander in the family bloodline. I don't see anything wrong with this part of the story.

Btw i liked this episode, they did rush this episode, but among the others this contained the most fighting scenes. I guess they wanted us to feel how fast did everything happen, how couldn't the characters think, and so on.

Also as i saw it, Shinkuro didn't want to run away, because he was afraid of the enemy, but to go after Murasaki, and after that he returned to the car because Benika ordered him to do so, to save Yayoi. So i don't think that it was the typical shounen like 'we run away because we're being beat up, and then go back and kick ass', even if it might seem like that.

About Shinkuro being a weakling: don't forget his age, and his fighting experience. If you take an other look, he fought with experts(i guess the Kuhouins don't employ amateurs to protect themselves), with two very skillful and experienced fighters on his side. No wonder he seemed weaker. The tables may turn when he uses his blade, but untill that i think it was pretty realistic.

I think it was a great episode as the episode before the last, even if it's not as good as the previous 10 episodes, it fulfilled it's task.

Here's the thing though, when you think of the Kuhouin, what immediately comes to mind? Thats right: a building. Thats it. That is our antagonist? We've got no context for why they're the way they are, nothing at all. Just a bunch of scenes with crusty old men being angry at each other. Why not show us why the Kuhouin's are going with this system and why they need it? If you dont, then I cant take any of this seriously, all I can see is a writer making up one dimensional villains that are boring.

Show us what they do. But oh, that would mean the antagonists would suffer character development and God forbid the viewer at any point emphasise with them, because in Kurenai there's only good guys and bad guys and an elbow blade.

Bad guys are actually the easiest to write and entertain viewers in the history of humanity, so its quite remarkable Kurenai cant even achieve that. *golf clap*

I think you are the typical example of thinking waaaay too much into things. The Kuhouin are our typical "traditional" royal family who don't marry outside the family. We know they existed in the past and even somewhat in the present (Amish). I honestly don't see a reason why we need to know their reasons. If it was their tradition since they've been a family - which we are led to believe - then so be it. For a 12 episode family, there is only so much they can go into depth with and I'm glad they didn't waste an episode in doing that, because it's something we already know.

And by the way, when I think of Kuhouin, a building definitely does not come to my mind. It's pretty much a very closed-minded family that believes in their blood and the fact that they cannot be *dirtied* by the outside world.

I have to agree with vindemon64. They're a traditional royal family from a long blood line. Back in the old days it wasn't out of the ordinary for royalty to inbreed or marry relatives thinking their blood would stay pure. There's really not much else to explain. It really all came down to the founders of the family in the past, just deciding to have their kids make kids with each other. Why this happened? Most likely because other royal family's where doing it at the time and it just become a trend and then a tradition. To have a whole episode showing why this happened would kind of be a waste of money and time for everyone. I'm sure the last episode they will shed a little more light on the subject but I doubt they will go into great detail why the family chooses to keep up with the tradition.

And yet we have to suffer an episode of a woman getting dumped. I'd rather know about the enemy the kid is up against than a typical dumping sequence. We dont need a flashback at all, we just need the bad guys being bad for a reason. Show the kuhouins affecting the real world outside of that building, maybe having dinner with the prime minister and telling him to start a new policy or something, make the odds stack against the good guys, etc, etc. No, all we're reduced to is a brother with a gentle voice and a typical "I want to fight someone strong!" bad girl, its like Naruto without the laughs at this point.

I'm only saying all this because the show is acting all serious and asking us, the viewer, to take it seriously. I dont make long rambles about Naruto, it knows what it is, so I know not to think too much about it.

I think you're reading to much into the family. They're just your typical rich family that happens to still practice the old tradition of inbreeding, nothing more, nothing less. I'm not taking the kuhouin's side but the "bad guys" can actually be considered victims in this series since Benikaand and Shinkurou technically kidnapped a royal child and now are trying to push their ideals onto the royal family threw the child. So when you say "we just need the bad guys being bad for a reason" its pretty clear their "bad" because their pissed that one of their family members got kidnapped. Do I agree with the things the Kuhouins do? No. I'm happy that Shinkurou is trying to make a difference.

The fight is pretty irrational and unsequenced. I like the mansion and the brother is really a fcking asshole... not funnz but he really seems like someone id meet in real life. I guess this series really is just comfy... not even the intro tried to be emotive... I really like the title accostumed fear... the tone it has it defines the whole atmosphere of kure-nai...

I'm just enjoying this, unlike everyone else, it appears. I do think that it's been a little rushed near the end, but if they only had 12 episodes to work with, then I think that they're doing pretty well with it.

Breaks my heart every time hearing Murasaki saying that she doesn't want to leave. Makes me think of the church camp that brainwashes all of my friends.
