Very dramatic and heroic chase scene there, I lol'ed when the penguin fell and started to drag Kamba's pants off.

The teacher is not her brother, it was her childhood friend i think. but i do agree with you, lol. she is such a scary stalker but she makes me laugh most of the times.

I'm not a fan of Ringo and this ep didn't make me like her, but it was nice to see someone who doesn't back down in front of the Queen (which is just as bitchy, if not more). Not the hat pull, but I'd definitely love to see a punch there.

Himari going buriburiburiburiburiburiburiburiburiburiburi was the cutest thing ever. The cockroaches get their revenge, Kanba is the fucking Terminator, #2 doc and #3 nurse, laser sighted slingshots, penguin load sharks, fuck yeah.

Her childhood friend where did you get that from? to be honest I'm not sure how old he is but he is Shouma's teacher right? so I don't think childhood friend would be correct, unless he is a super young teacher.

I don't think it has been revealed how she knows him/met him, maybe it was bird watching? she loves penguins and he is a bird watcher.... I don't know, but I don't think it was childhood friends.

Wasn't the blonde woman his childhood friend?

he is Shouma´s teacher but in a previous episode, he appeared in Ringo´s memories when she was a kid and he was a high school student (not a teacher) and went to eat dinner in her house frequently, which means : they were neighbors, or friends.
Ringo was not his childhood friend...but i guess we could say he was her childhood friend, no? he was an acquaintance of her mother after all.

Honestly, unless you've just skipped or completely ignored the past couple of episodes, I don't know how you can possibly not sympathize with Ringo. All of her hard work and carefully laid out plans have been Murphy's lawed to death. You can't tell me you didn't at least pity Ringo a little when Yuri started taunting her about her failures. And then there's also her backstory where her parents have been almost completely absent from her life since at least age 11. By this episode, it's clear that that's the major reason for her "yandere" behavior.
Honestly, the reason I dislike Ringo is because of her belief in fate. I hate that. Everything she does, everything she says is to follow a destiny that someone wrote for her. I find it to be despicable, to just live your life towards some stupid objective someone gave her. Make your own destiny, dammit!

That said, I love her determination and how gutsy she is. It's just too bad it's towards wrong goals.
"Tonight, I sit in the eye of the storm. As fire boils around me, I press forward, winds and lightning lashing my wings. I am no match for what I face. Yet I will not back down, and though fear may place it's stranglehold on my heart, courage will see me through. With tears in my eyes, I hit full throttle. My engines become an inferno, and my weapons light up, awaiting my command.

If I die tonight, I will do so fighting for everything I believe in."

Sounds more like an aquaintance of the family, thus he was probably the object of childish affections from Ringo, which soon developed into a full blown stalker crush that has become obssessive and twisted, but thanks for reminding me of their past, however we are yet to find out exactly how they met I guess.

Also, I'm calling shenanigans on the chase scene. The penguin-bitch was obviously enjoying herself making things harder than they needed to be. No amount of anime physics can explain this:
Besides, we know for a fact that she has long-distance teleportation powers. She could have probably gotten back by herself.
Can't agree you on that one because the hat was totally locked in and stuck within the door latches. It would be possible that it be held up like that.

Masako-san looks really nice with the way her hair was done.

-I hated Ringo so much for what she did to Shouma...slapping the near life out of him for "screwing with her"

AND!!!! for what she did to Himari! she's so stupid. You can see how much trouble she caused the family for doing that especially for Kanba.

-The part where he was being dragged by the truck was so scary D=

Wait a second, that fate of hers is not written by anyone but herself I though so how she is thinking that it is a destiny written for her when she herself writes it out? That makes no sense.

I'm not sure she writes in it, I thought it was actually predetermined, if not maybe whatever she writes happens to some degree, but it may not be aimed at who she wants it to be at, I think we mainly see her stamping it as Destiny, seriously I am confused by this diary grrr

I don't believe it is, it's just simply what we know as a generality towards the relationships in the show thus far.

Another fantastic episode, I believed every character shined besides Tabuki, rather lame part like normal. I do agree with the poster earlier in the thread, Kanba's child voice was a little off to me.
Looking at posts on the Internet wouldn't bother me so much if people didn't also mix up he and she.

Was that Takehito Koyasu who did the voice for the siblings' father? It's nice fanservice to see VAs who worked on Utena doing work for this title.

I wonder what's Masako's beef with Kanba to sacrifice one of her subordinates like that, if I remember, I saw a scan of the relationship chart of this series with an arrow linking them together. I'm also curious what Kanba did in order to acquire the money. Also, I should've noticed that from the first episode, but Himari's eyes change colors to pink when the Penguin Hat possesses her and noticed that the pink haired man/woman had the same eye color. Is he/she the human form of the Penguin Hat, or is it someone linked to her?

And Ringo gained respect points when she defied the Penguin Hat like that (though I have to admit some of the things that she said about her were true). Looking forward to what kind of relationship Ringo will have with the siblings in the next episode, and whether it will shed some light sooner than we expected on the diary and the Penguindrum.

That's good to hear because well, I don't know why but I am hoping for Shouma x Ringo, and Shouma to grow a pair, or to well at least stop being such a punching bag.

I always suspected Kanba had it in him, behind his douchebag persona (most don't think of him as such but he just seems too umm cocky or jerkass to me at times), I don't mind him as much now, but the fact that the red haired girl and kanba both had items with a specific emblem on it (the ball she shot and the envelope with the money) makes me suspect he is up to something.

And yes Ringo did a comeback, climbing up from that pit, and whilst I don't wish to sound like a pervert, we did get a panty flash from her (white btw)... FANSERVICE? well in all honesty her angry, gutsy performance was umm nice 8-), maybe I just like strong willed women (but I could do without her stalker tendencies)

Shouma x Ringo is what I believe, besides they do contrast, Angry girl, Calm guy :P actually that is unique since this isn't a tsundere case!

I freaking love this anime. It's the only one (out of all the summer animes this year) that has made me laugh this hard.

The penguins are hilarious, and everything Ringo does cracks me up.
She's like one of those shoujo manga girls that really want to get a guy to love
them but she's even wackier.
Unfortunate things always happen to her and the love rival always seems to win.
In the beginning I thought I would really hate her, but I
really like her. The "creepy stalker pervert" she is makes me like her.
She's definitely not the "typical-girl-falling-in-love" kind of girl.

I don't know if it's possible, but I ( really) want Shouma x Ringo to happen
The episode where they kissed (technically) made my heart skip a beat.
I don't know why, but it's probably b/c I feel so bad for Ringo xD

She's such a mess. Ahh, this is what happens when people are crazy in love.

You know what I agree I said the exact same thing that she isn't the typical girl falling in love type in the previous episode discussion, however you shouldn't feel bad for a stalker, they often have something messed up in their minds, there is a difference between love and obssession, I'm not sure where Ringo is at this moment in time but she is obviously extremely wacky, which makes me love her as a character, I especially loved her giving bitch hat, a nice old bitch slap, just like she deserved, she had it coming and it couldn't have come from anyone better.

I agree about Shouma x Ringo, it does seem like a good pairing, but at this moment in time we don't know much so we shouldn't really start going into details, though I think that diary points more towards Shouma than it does for Tabuki.

Umm it doesn't make you that crazy you know, not to the extent that Ringo takes it (the stalking and scaling a building for a picture of a nest, just so she can get closer to the one she is stalking) that is beyond the normal crazyness but I love her character all the same.

I'm starting to think that Ringo isn't really in love with...what's the homeroom teacher's name again?
Anyway, I think Ringo is just too depressed about her parents. Her mother ignores her, her father has a new family, and both of Ringo's parents actually forgot the moments they spent together. Can't take it, Ringo decided to turn to the teacher maybe? Since the teacher is kind of fatherly, and he actually cares for Ringo. So she decided to have this imaginary idea of a Fate Diary where it's just really her agenda where she writes her plans. I can see that things don't happen according to the Diary now, so I don't think the Penguin Drum is her agenda. Basically, Ringo's just searching for a parental figure, and she sees it in the homeroom teacher. But she mistook is as love.

And that girl...the girl who shot the artist...Gosh, why can't I remember the names?
My theory: She doesn't like Kanba for dumping her, but also obsessed with Kanba? So she wants his exes to forget about him, but she doesn't know them. That's why she made the whole Kanba Victim Association thingy, so she can know who his exes are. She make sure that Kanba's exes have an accident before she erased their memories so there's a logical reason why the exes forget Kanba.
Yeah, I think the one who pushed the artist is...that girl who shot the artist. Oh lol, I need to remember their names.
Oh well, I know it's too early to make theories about the new character, but none of the girls in this anime are normal.

I kinda think along those lines as well. It's obvious she's got issues with her parents. They are divorced and she rarely sees her father so I think it's very likely that her obsession with her teacher stemmed from/is related to her family problems.

@GigaSPX, I think that was Akira? I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure it was. I have no clue what the line-up was about though.

Anyway, that was an amazing episode! Definitely the best one yet. I thought the strangest part of it all was the flashback of Kanba's dad wearing a jacket with the penguin symbol. We've been seeing it a lot lately, like on those red things in the slingshot, so it must have some importance. Also, Ringo in Survival Strategy was hilarious. Seems like a lot of people dislike her, but I think she's awesome, albeit a little strange. I wonder how she'll react to everything that happened in the next episode. (Penguindrum 05)

Ohmygod that whole chasing for the hat scene was just so epic. He was literally dragged by a truck that was probably running at full speed.

I'm starting to develop an interest in Kanba and his relationship with that woman in red heels, for he was paying close attention to the news about that woman. Plus, she also said that she saw "him," and somehow I feel like Kanba was the one who pushed her down the stairs.

Anyhow I feel bad for Penguin #2 also with all of those cockroaches attacking him lol.

rewatch the end of episode 4, they show the legs of the person who pushed her down, and they we're definitely wearing black heels. So most likely, it was the slingshot woman who pushed her down, thus, she needed to erase her memories.

Meh, me too and I find the same with Sailor Moon. Anime was good and live action was total shit. Ironically my friend found it good.

Now making this into a live would be a bad mistake or should I say interesting but TV live series might better.

Also like someone mentioned on the previous episode thread, there is sort of evidence through the clothing visible when pushed and the red haired chicks clothes in the opening, which matches up, but still perhaps the clothing is a uniform? and anyone who works for this place with the penguin logo as their emblem wheres it, why do I say something so absurd? well the ball the girl shot had a penguin on it and the envelope that Kanba received had a penguin on it, hmm maybe they're working together actually though they operate differently.

This is just random guessing here but perhaps, Kanba with his playboy ways draws in girls, whilst the red hair girl then deals with them, of course this is probably not true.

Is it only me, but I found the VA to do the child Kanba was really off... It just sounded weird when child Kanba was talking to the father...

Same here. It seems they don't check the finish of their works or cannot say no to the director. Anyway this episode is far better than the previous one. But still the development is too slow.

This show is becoming weirder and weirder, I'm lucky I didn't drop it after the first episode.

I see Ringo's father has the phone key ring that looks like an eel that appears in the ED.

I kind of like the way I have no idea what the hell is going on and that practically nothing has been explained. I think.

Having no idea what's going on? well I think you should, umm they are searching for the penguindrum, ringo's diary is probably it and bitch hat is a bitch.... yeah.

That eel is probably from his other family, maybe even a new daughter, which may be the reason for Ringo's potential family/daddy issues, which I think is a key reason why she is drawn to Tabuki (someone who does act fatherly or well kind I guess).

Strange how you can be completely in the dark yet still enjoy episodes right?

If you want someone to blame for that mess, then Shouma is more responsible. If he had just told Ringo the truth instead of making up that completely absurd lie about penguinbitch being an alien, then none of that would have happened. The only reason he lied about it was because he wanted to be vindicated after that doctor laughed at him. He seriously shouldn't be lying for such a stupid reason when his sister's life is on the line. He should have just tell her that the hat resurrected her and is keeping her alive under the condition that they locate the penguindrum.

I don't think Shoma was lying; rather it was the BEST explanation he could even think of, with penguin hat throwing some pretty inhumane technology around.

I'm totally proud of him for this ep, actually; penguin hat has put the brothers in a completely inexplicable situation, but he gets sick of following after Kanba in the sneaking around and lying approach, and musters the courage to ask for help in a normal way, knowing that he sounds ridiculous and convincing anyone will be awkward and difficult. I half-expected the doctor to tell him anxiety about Himari's condition was affecting him, mentally.

Totally agreed on everything about Ringo, though. She's delusional, but understandably so, and completely earnest. Episode three handled her story in a sympathetic way, and this ep made me love her.

Kanba's development was kind of expected for me. Do think he's trying too hard to handle things by himself-what stood out to me in his flashback was that he only burdened his dad, but the father didn't waste time trying to straighten him out when he now had two kids to protect instead of one.

Imagine the road was dry when Kanba grabbed on the hat while being dragged by the truck... XDD
This is what actually came up to my mind when I watched the chasing scene.XDD

EXACTLY! You are the shit that shined out the dirt! Ironically speaking, you are totally right! That is exactly the problem and it's too bad drama got into all of it when comprehension through explanations would have been best.
