Ed could fix thiscountry but Kino just travels.

Kind of sad really, the people believe and then we find the story and then other people believe differently, sad.

And Kino does love free stuff, love how he got the extra ammo after finding out it was free.

It isn't about being false or true, but about wrongly interpreting a book or text or whatever. And even a unmeant interpretation is not false in itself - as this episode for example proved - . Like a teacher of mine often repeated (please bare with my translation) it isn't about truth, but about "realness" and anything can be real even though it is not true.

two lines from this episode i really love:
"Only a bird with broken wings sings the truth." Freaking emo and depressing, and maybe not true, but still so beautiful and deep when you hear it for the first time.

"I don't know. Ask me again in the morning." Self-explanatory.

This episode was nothing short of beautiful. and btw:

I agree with GreatS. And... it's not just the bible. Every religious text, be they Christian, Jewish, Islam, etc. predicts some kind of apocalypse. What we have to remember is it's only real if we believe it to be.

Things don't always happen as you might think they will. Things aren't as you might think they are.

I liked how, in the end, the prophecy turned out to be slightly true - the country was indeed destroyed before the morning arrived, if the other country's people did what they were up to

These sort of allusions seem quite common.
And it seems to me, well obviously it means, this is no revelation, that cruelty and loss often helps people see things for what they are. Sort of situations like "you don't know what you have till it's gone".

People learn from sadness more than happiness. When something goes wrong, the human mind goes crazy trying to figure out how to solve the problem. If everything is just the way you want it, you hardly have to learn a thing.
You don't have to learn to fix what's not broken.

Only a bird with broken wings sings the truth is just an exaggerated way of putting it more artistic effect. Because we are likely to feel sorry for a bird without wings.

It's hardly emo to me, to say such a thing. Well, depending on what you mean by emo. Which is becoming encompassing and straying for it's original meaning with every minute.

To me though, they are just very beautiful words. Because they exemplify the value in sorrow. I don't believe sorrow is necessarily worthless, and nothing is worse than death. I would rather be in sorrow for eternity than death. I don't care if it makes someone think I'm emo. I'd rather be stronger than someone who thinks sorrow is worse than death, when sorrow has oh so much value and should be cherished.

Old avatar and sig retired for now.

Lol! Just what's going to happen here now? For me, it's so ironic that somehow this episode is happening in our world already. But, who cares? LOL!

This anime is great, yeah!!!

But oh well, this is just my opinion; but, we shouldn't debate the religions and beliefs, like whose true or false, real or unreal. I mean, everyone has a CHANCE/choice or an opportunity to choose right? Well, you can also choose not to believe anything either. So, for me; to be on the safe and middle side; just let other people choose what they want to believe or whether they believe it or not, we all had freedom. :D

It seems more like people make prophecies true, rather than prophecies just coming true on their own. Things are only as real as you believe them to be.

But yeah. Pretty awesome how Kino got a bunch of free stuff, haha. Loved the episode again, of course. :D

Maybe the guy wrote it intending the country to be destroyed. It's crazy what people will believe. As long as it's in a book, it's official. Jealous of Kino for all the free stuff.

This episode is great enough with the end of the world thing.... but the story was merely halfway... When the hotel reception told her about the book of prophecy... then to the war....

There's such a thing as a self-fulfilling prophecy of course, but luckily the creators of the show had the sense to stop short of accusing every religious book of being the ramblings of a mad poet. As Kino herself says in the end, there's no way we can really know. I admire her detached attitude and willingness to let life take its course.

*Describe this show in 1 word: EPIC.

Seriously, I've started watching Kino's Journey months ago but because of lack of time i decided to on-hold it first to watch other animes.. Now i have some time and i decided to continue it.. And my opinion hasn't changed at all, what an incredible show this is!

I loved this episode because it showed what is often happening nowadays.. The question is not whether it is true or false, but how we interpret it. If we want something to be true, then it will be. If not, then it won't.

About the bible..
It is up to us whether to believe it or not - or how much we believe it.
I for my part right now, do not believe much in it (Yes, I do believe in God) - because the bible is more or less a collection of stories from so many peoples, interpretet and written down again by other peoples. Which leads me into thinking that most of the things are either exaggerated or not true at all. But on the other hand, it has to contain some kind of true or else the Bible might not exist at all..

Everything was pulled so cleverly that it's great.

A town whose main "tradition" is to change traditions.
And how humans can take something and blow it out of proportions or look at it objectively (through Kino's eyes).

What an excellent episode. Fanaticism. One of my favorites themes for a show to exemplify. It clearly show how gullible the humans are, attaching themselves to beliefs that aren’t anything but false prophesies or written thoughts that can mean any one thing depending on who chooses to interpret them; people devoting themselves, waiting for them to come true to give “meaning” to their life, willing to throw away everything else for this faith.

Kino sure likes free things, huh? Free ammo is God for her. I love how she’s so aloof and goes with the flow of life, as things they’re, they’ll remain.

Hermes: "Kino, was the prophecy right or wrong? Which do you think is it?"

Herein lies the irony. That prophecy was nothing more than a fabricated poem of sorrow, but it became reality because it was believed as such.
On one side, one kingdom was destroyed for its people believed the world would end; on the other side, one kingdom destroyed the other to avoid getting itself destroyed.
If it weren't believed to be true, it would never have become a prophecy; it would just be a poem of sorrow and nothing would have come of it.

I believe that explaining it kills its charm, but I hope it helps you understand it.

I have to say, this episode seems to mirror what just happened in our world. The world didn't end on 5/21 and the fools who believed it are now left without anything while the "experts" are looking for a new date. I couldn't have picked a better time to watch this show.

I can’t tell whether I’m hating this series or loving it. While I understand that is necessary at times to simplify people and places in order to make point in a limited amount of time, I feel that this anime goes too far in the simplification. All the countries and the people represented in them are lame caricatures of some real idea. The problem is that the show tries to treat this all seriously and provide some sort of moral lesson or judgment. There is a disconnect with the ridiculous and preposterous natures of the countries and its people and the seriousness that the anime tries to express that prevents me from enjoying it.

The only that keeps me going is when I examine not the countries of Kino herself. That what we see is not reality itself, but Kino’s perceptions of a culture she does not fully understand marred by her unconscious prejudices.
