I've recently received a suggestion to begin a link list for anime music, OSTs and the such. What are your opinions on the matter?

Ok, so I left the issue of adding a music link section to the officers and they have voted "yes." So, sometime in the next few days I will begin adding a category/list for anime music links.

We arrived at this decision after looking at a few other music clubs here on MAL. We don't want to step on anyone's toes by "stealing" an idea or something of the sort, but as we looked through the other clubs we were unable to find an actual list of sites for downloading purposes. So now we feel it's safe to add our own.

There needs to be an IRC section.
I mean like a tutorial or something for downloading with IRC
EDIT
Well maybe not... cuz the IRC bots would get flooded... lol

Hum...interesting. I don't use IRC bots myself, but if you're willing to write a tutorial on the matter, it can be the first in a line of tutorials written by members.

A list of IRC bots organized by which channel and group might be possible. Not sure how many people would actually need it though. Definitely a possibility though. We need to do a bit more research on this matter.

Someone needs to build a IRC bot file search engine :D Almost every sub group keeps an IRC bot with their releases, that would really boost anime sharing (or the bots would get flooded like evilsage4 said :D)

Like a search engine that indexes the bots themselves or the actual files they manage?

The files, who would search for a bot? :D The bot's name, server and channel should be returned after sth is found.
Actually it doesn't sound too hard, maybe I'll try to put something together this weekend.

It's an awesome idea if you make it work but I'm questioning exactly how. I mean, would the program itself ping each bot with a file list request or what?

No, it would just execute a few commands on each bot to pull down a list. but the problems is that every bot is different, so the command would need to be tailored to each bot.
To much work for a guy like me... I won't develop it. Though since we are on the subject, I am working on a MAL updater client for linux and OSX :) though I don't know if I'll ever finish it lol

Ah, makes sense. Hum...if the bot was designed to only check a list of desired bots, such as a hand-picked list of groups (such as the ones my blog follows :D), it might not take too long for someone who's interested.

Good luck with your updater client.

Their not too different.. I've only seen 2 or 3 types of commends to get the list. And I've already made an IRC bot before, so all I need to get to know is how the XDCC works to download the file-list file.

So u wanna make one? cool!
There are a few IRC libs out there to help you out. like python-irclib... all you would need to do is execute a "msg" or "ctcp" method to run '/msg "bot" xdcc send #1' type thing and parse the text file. or a !list or something

Thx ^^ That irc-help site doesn't help much :D I already found it while making my spam-bot. I just captured my net traffic with wireshark and found out most of things I needed to know from an IRC client. The irclib might be a good idea. Sending everything manually was hard ^^'

Should be going to school now..

IRC? o_o
...hmmm.....i was thinking...Should we make the 2 clubs affliated clubs? such that people find anime on this club, and discuss about anime of the other one, subject to the approval of other admins of course! I was thinking of having a new HTWA project with site links and reviews regarding Anime/manga/music/graphics etc. But now that i think of it, it might be pretty redundant since its basically doing pretty much what this club is doing. We already have an irc channel up and running, so you perhaps you could use it too, and shini, tigerz etc are already part of this club too...(i just realised...lol...^^) What do you think, keswick? =P

Sounds like a good idea. The purpose of this club and the HTWA really go hand-in-hand anyway. Actually, Dr_Jan_Itor was speaking to me about this before the MAL downtime a few weeks ago but we never finished. Thanks for the offer of using your IRC channel.

Just inform me of whatever you guys would like to do with the affiliate process. We might as well maintain an active collaboration between our two clubs since they're so alike.

I have a suggestion. Maybe you could rate links. You know like I trust this site so I give it like ten points and I don't recommend to use this site because it may cause problems

Right, right. Hum...we would actually have to use the member's help with that one. It would be impossible to ask everyone to review all the links at once. Although, I do think it might work if we posted a few links for review every few days. Yeah, that might work.

how about a Recomendation Center? i do have a group like that but kinda empty sadly , its my way of thinking that people can help others trying to find the next anime to watch but they dont know what to watch. so you ask them what they are looking for genre wise and the such then others try to come up with other series not on their watch or completed list and tell them so they can finally start the next series ^^. so how about that?

Interesting idea. I have been trying to find a few ways to bring people to the club for reasons other than the links and this might be suitable. I looked at the club you mentioned and it seems like a good idea. The issue with this though, is that we would need a dedicated person to always make sure the requests are fulfilled in the case that our members are not helping one another. Would you be willing to do this?

thanks for likeing the idea ^^

I could try but i am average person who sleeps and go to school so its very probable i will be delayed by like 7 hours or so the latest at a given time if otherwise stated.. Example: Graduation i probably wont be around for the entire day because i have relatives comming over also but would be helpful if more could help me expecially from a diffrent timezone that they are awake when i'm asleep and when i'm in school they are home..that kinda thing would help tons but i would take any kinda help.

if thats all okay it seems i might be of some help

how about a links section for anime & manga informational sites (updates, new releases, news, licenses, airing dates, facts, details etc.)
followed by a misc stage below it. this stage would contain sites about anything else anime/manga related (anime wallpapers, photos, original artwork, artwork directly related to series, fan art, fanfiction, or anything else someone would like to find after finishing an anime - or before idc)

i've already compiled about 15 potential sites up until now since last year, and have about 6 misc sites scrambled on my anime bookmarks.
some of the sites may be very obvious but i guess they are only to start it up.

so what do you think? yay or nay?

Building on the Recomendation Center idea, why not put it in a red color right to the link or something:

@enkil, I like the idea. I suggest we start working on that the moment we finish rating our links.

@Veggen, It'll be difficult to label the sites though, since each user has a different opinion. Example: quality that looks exceptional to a person who streams usually looks like absolute trash to a person who downloads.

Keswick: No, it's not a problem at all, opinion can't change the pixel aspect ratio. SD is typically 640×480 / 4:3 (youtube SD) compared to 1280×720 / 16:9 (youtube HD).

It wouldn't really be a good idea to add the label next to the site because streaming anime sites have a variety of definition videos.
for example, on a site, an anime series may have high definition videos while another anime may have standard or even low definition. making the labels inaccurate.

another problem is that the videos on an anime site don't really stay stagnant all the time.
they get removed and replaced when they get broken, and get replaced when removed for © infringement.
hence a video that was high definition last week may be standard definition this week.
the labels would then become inaccurate (again). not to mention that we would have to recheck every site at least once every month for updates because we have "no way" of knowing when and where a video gets replaced.

Even if we do go through with it. it would just be of little use. because the norm when choosing between high definition and standard definition usually goes like this:
if you want HD then you go download torrents that have episodes with 230MB in size or higher.
if you want SD then you just go watch the episodes on streaming sites.
and anything in between or if you just don't care then you just use direct downloads.

unless there is a way to automatically identify HD & SD videos on an anime site and then take out the percentage of which are and which aren't HD.
then this would just be a waste of time and effort.
