THIS IS AN ANIME ONLY DISCUSSION POST. DO NOT DISCUSS THE MANGA BEYOND THIS EPISODE.

What the hell happened to these characters? They look absolutely nothing like their manga versions. I'm not sure if I like the dark mood either, at the very least I don't think the beginning of Part 3 had this kind of tone.
"Yes, I have been deprived of emotion. But not completely. Whoever did it, botched the job."

Yeah, for example here is what Jotaro looks like in the manga:

Jotaro is the oldest 17 year old I've ever seen, but oh sweet baby jeebus...he's definitely one of the sexiest! His Stand is awesome! I LOVE super manly anime!!

Nice start! Stand sure beats the hell outa hamon. I think Jotaro should still learn Hamon though. I'm feelin this realist style, the quality of the animation is excellent. However, a blonde Joseph is pretty weird. I hope this ova retains Joseph's playful personality. I'm intrested to see how this Dio compares to the ultimate life-form guys.

Beautiful animation, but it felt kind of wasted on those seiyuu and music. Not that they give a dark tone, more like a bland tone. It was made in 2000, but I thought I was watching some OVA from the beginning of the 90s (Vampire Hunter), but that might be to keep the feel of the 1993 OVA, so I guess I'll find out about that in a few episodes.

It sure is jarring going from the 2014 anime version to this, but gotta keep JoJo Friday alive somehow until it comes back in January. Also I saw that bullshit! Jotaro doesn't have his stand draw the fly until after his school fight! I'm watching you OVA...I'm watching you...

I watched the original Jojo anime back around 1998 and was confused as Hell by it. At the time I had no idea that it was not the beginning of the story. 2019 now and I'm FINALLY watching the prequel. Loving what I see so far!

Jotar's hair hat spikes protruded so much they kept reminding me of Sonic the Hedgehog.

Anyway, kind of a dull start. Was never the biggest fan of the Stardust Crusader's opening bits and the more serious tone doesn't really help. I did appreciate the addition of floating head DIO vs. Jonathan at the beginning.

I frickin love the:

"Kujo Jotaro is a normal, popular Japanese high-schooler..."

.. aspect of the official summaries of this show.

Because those details are just barely relevant. And, even though the first OVA's of this franchise are significantly less comedic than the modern-day version of the show, I think this has to be a humorous intention. Jotaro's colossal character design and adultish face contrasting the fact that he's supposed to be a seventeen year old high schooler. It's laughable. There's not many other animes who would give their protagonist a profile like this.

I've finished watching David Production's adaptation of JoJo (2012 onwards) a while back. So I'm guessing I'll watch the pre-2012 OVAs. I'm going for an in-universe choronological viewing, so the 2000 OVA first before the 1993 one. Yeah, this is kind of weirding me out already. So not only they've picked part 3 to be the first animated adaptation, but they picked the 2nd half first. Has Jotaro always have been the fan favourite? I mean, to be fair I guess DIO's fight is a good first impression for an anime adaptation.

Did Jotaro ever had a dream sequence of Jonathan being decapitated by Dio in David Pro's adaptation? Yeah, I think that's one difference. He's also not alone with cellmates and he was "defeated" by being lured out of the cell, which I believe wasn't the case in DP's version. And finally, his chains are making sounds. Imagine if Risotto does the same thing with his hat. Yeah, there are videos of people documenting the difference between the two versions so I think I'll stop.

Anyways, for the more opinionated part of the comment. I know, these are probably popular opinions anyway so that's why I'm placing it at the bottom. And I don't want to spread too much negativity.

Right off the get-go this OVA is different from David Pro's adaptation. I love JoJo for it's personality and high-energy, flamboyant atmosphere. Personally, my favourite anime parts are BT and DiU (and Joseph and Josuke are my favourite JoJos) since those parts capture what I love about this anime. Maybe I judging this OVA too much (which I really don't want to), but I just don't see those elements present here. No over-the-top sound effects, no dramatic soundeffects, no flashy colours, none of that. I'm willing to admit that it's probably just not my thing, but damn, it's just too gloomy. And it doesn't help that they've picked the gloomiest part for this OVA. Like, man, why did they pick Stardust Crusaders? I feel like if they've picked Battle Tendecy at least Joseph's colourful personally could've helped offset the dark atmosphere. Oh well, I guess this was just something people wanted back then.

Yeah, I think I'm a little harsh. It is just the 1st episode (or not, since there was the 1993 OVA).

I'm not really sure if I want to finish this. I might watch a video or two about the OVA and see if the person narrating it could convince me. Or I'd just watch this very slowly. Which to be fair, is something I already do anyway.

That name... DIO.
Dat explosion.
A head in the glass.
It's alive. It's attacking someone.
Dat stab. Dat explosion.
A guy in a cell.
Kujo Jotaro. 17.
The cellmates want out.
Possessed?
Holy. Papa.
Yare Yare daze.

Good start. The 30th anniversary of the original 1993 OVA is days away so I'm watching this first. I had the opportunity to watch this so many times since the 2000's and only seen clips of the opening scene with Jotaro so many times. I even put it in my backlog. It's the right time now. Watching this makes me miss the 90's-00's. I felt emotional and hyped at the same time. I love how Jotaro's seiyuu has almost the same name as him, but rearranged (kanji included). He's also my predecessor. I love hearing Chikao as Joseph and Tanaka as DIO. Legends.
If you see that my post is exactly 1 month old (or more) from when it was posted... Don't waste your time, especially when you want to reply with something petty & insignificant. Assume that I've moved on (because I have).
