| ^I sure hope there's a vol 2... but there clearly isn't. The manga overall was good, but I didn't like the ending. Too many loose threads... Not to mention how the brother is being "rehabilitated." Idk, the brother-sister relationship is seemingly mended, but I don't like that the brother is sacrificing cross dressing because of it... It makes the sister's views of her brother seem very... superficial, imo. (Seriously, why is the sister trying to rehabilitate him? Because she thinks it's gross? Because she's ashamed? The hot guy changed his values... so why couldn't the sister?) It doesn't send a very good message about being different or being accepted... Instead it's just like people have to conform to society so just give up being different.... Maybe I'm thinking too much about it... |

While the manga initially touched on several issues surrounding its subject matter carefully and light-heartedly, in its last third, it forgot all about delicacy and finesse and tried to shoot straight to the ending as quickly as possible, making it abundantly clear that the manga's serialization was forcibly cut short. Whether it was due to low ratings (something I can easily see happening if it were overshadowed by other gender-bender manga running under the same serialisation), a loss of interest from the mangaka, or a combination of both, this manga was unfortunately never to be. I did really enjoy the series for its light-hearted comedy; it was genuinely funny in those earlier chapters. Unfortunately, it took a serious, dramatic turn and handled both its characters and the themes it was working with very poorly, to say the least. Ultimately, this manga wasn't given enough room to really breathe and explore its themes at its own pace. The way it set up its narrative was relatively solid, and if they handled its themes and its characters with some competency, it could have even turned out to be a good manga! Unfortunately, this simply wasn't the case. But hey, I liked the earlier parts of the manga enough to finish the last third, and I'm not all that disappointed that I did. I largely knew what I was getting into with this manga, what with the short length and its mismatched broad premise. I expected it to be cut short before it could really shine. Of course, I didn't expect the series to be butchered as glamorously as it was, but I was largely prepared. It wasn't so bad that I wouldn't recommend it to anyone; they'd just have to have a vested interest in cross-dressing/gender-bending and enjoy or don't mind a light-hearted (faint-hearted) narrative. I don't regret reading Past Future. |

What is this ending? Anything would be better than this; if Mirai just finally came to accept it after some heartfelt cheesy conversation it would even be better than this; if there was some cheesy cliché of Mirai breaking down in tears and admitting that the reason he hated it was because Kako looked cuter than he did...  |
