THIS IS AN ANIME ONLY DISCUSSION POST. DO NOT DISCUSS THE MANGA BEYOND THIS EPISODE. ---------------------------------------- If any short needs a history lesson this is probably it. Although I'm guessing if you've found the MAL page you're less in need of one but anyway... It's easy to mistakenly assume this was made in 1936, what with "1936!" exploding around the screen every so often, and appearing in the title. However it was produced in 1934, looking forward to a time 2 years in the future where Japan is potentially vulnerable to dastardly cartoon mice. (Bear in mind I'm no history expert, but here's just the "need to know"): - In the aftermath of WW1, Japan had pretty good relations with the Allies, though as time went on things became strained, with the US wary of growing Japanese military might, which had knock-on effects. - Beginning with the 1922 Washington Naval Treaty, construction of (UK, US, Japanese, French and Italian) warships were restricted to prevent an arms race, though some in Japan felt a little short-changed, having less to begin with. - Without going into the ins and outs of it, Japan invaded Manchuria in 1931. - Following widespread international condemnation for this, Japan left the proto-UN League of Nations in 1933, feeling pretty sore that no-one was sympathetic to its ostensible reasons for doing so, and that America was leading a campaign against them. - At the close of 1934, an isolated Japan announces it won't renew the treaty, due to expire in 1936. - Mickey Mouse invades! As for the short, not really my thing. |

Interesting but not that good. I was rooting for Mickey Mouse to win the whole time. |

That cat on the island is definitely Felix. No wait, that makes no sense. |

...Man I dunno, this felt really pressuring, like the animation is trying to be fun but you can still smell the propaganda from behind it all. D: |

Felix the Cat is Japanese!? Momotaro from a book!? Usual for 1930's, cute funky designs, lots of reused cycles, simpler but smoother animation than some modern animes. Like the akabeko styled tiger-mouse. Tons of funny randomness. |

Is the duration by any chance false? Or did I watched the wrong file? :D The version I have is only 5:54 minutes long. ([Anonymoose] Omocha Bako Series Dai 3 Wa - Ehon 1936-nen (DVD, 10bit) [C8BC1BDD]) As for the short itself, it was pretty meh in my opinion. |
The dearer you hold a memory the more painful it becomes. |

Felix the Traitorous Yankee Cat was just chilling with his fellow islanders when the dastardly Mickey Mouse and his legions of mind-controlled reptiles attacked. Fortunately for them, a storybook full of Japanese folklore characters was just in reach to save the day. I personally find the Western war propaganda films more amusing because they really go their way to insult the opponent through stereotypical portrayals. This one's pretty meh for something that should rally up the masses for the wartimes. |

Messy AF. Most Jap propaganda films were really terrible. You can see the artists had little interest in this fare. Japanese cinema was much more effective at creating propaganda. Take a look at the early works of Kinoshita Keisuke, who made effective yet captivating emotional propaganda films instead. The animation department was a monumental failure in this regard. Mickey mouse was infinitely more successful. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Keisuke_Kinoshita |
