Before starting this series, I read a few reviews that mentioned some "highly disturbing" scene of a woman being tortured.

After having watched all of Shigurui, I can't recall any such instance. Was I asleep when it happened, did my version of the series have it edited out, or do I simply have a different standard for "highly disturbing" than other people?

In what episode did this occur?

I think they were probably talking about the nipple scene(s).

Wait, the one where Kogan's wife has her nipple hit really hard when he realizes she cheated on him? Are you sure about this? In the context of the series and especially the episodes dealing with Seigen's punishment, that hardly even raised an eyebrow.

Well..the only scene I can think of that fits the "woman being tortured" you mentioned would be the scene where the old guy rips her nipple off then in the next episode the guy with the sliced mouth eats it in front of her.

But yeah..I thought the hot iron or w/e between the legs was way more disturbing.

That's the scene that someone on the forums said made this the most "disturbing anime ever."

I think there is no single most disturbing scene, the whole anime's mood leaves me unsettled when I marathon it.

I cannot pinpoint one particular scene that is disturbing in this anime, the whole anime IS disturbing...for me at least..

I totally agree with Plate when he said: the whole anime's mood leaves me unsettled when I marathon it.

Wow, I must be in the same vein of ShaolinRibiero... I don't see this anime as very disturbing. I am more disturbed by the overtly sexual tones and perversion of other anime series, especially when dealing in 15 yr old and younger characters.

There are plenty other anime series that dish out much more violence, and in a more disturbing manner than this anime. The only reason this one really stands out, in my opinion, is because the violence is more slow paced and detailed.

Imagine Elfin Lied in the Shigurui style, I think many people would be puking and Shigurui would be viewed as tame.
Is there another word for synonym?

The disturbing things in this anime is what's implied I guess, and not what is actually shown on screen. I don't know if you read the manga, right after Seigen was "castrated" by Kugan....there was actually more to it. When Ushimata told Seigen and Iku to leave to a village near the place....it was only a trap so that they can be beaten and tortured more. That wasn't really shown in the anime, but it was kind of implied.

However, the things that are shown on screen is definitely the most disturbing you'll see in any anime I think. Elfen Lied is violent too, but it's just more in the sense of people exploding left and right. But in Shigurui it's incest, rape, nasty stuff.

I mean, you don't see a guy eating another dude's eyeballs in Elfen Lied do you.

Elfen Lied is like a child's play compared to Shigurui. The ordinarity and realism of violence in Shigurui is what i call really disturbing. Of course some of the most disturbing scenes exist only in the manga.

This.

I think Shigurui it's sometimes a little disturbing, yes. But it's disturbing in an honest way ;). And Elfen Lied it's a joke...

It is disturbing, and the manga is even more graphic with some scenes tittering on the edge of guro...

I totally agree!

People comment on the gore, the incest, rape, & violence found throughout Shigurui. The steady pace, quietness, & the muted palette seem only to enhance the impact of these scenes, I think. But none of it is gratuitous. I think it's that deliberate-ness that packs one heckuva wallop. It's extreme, but reality-based. Intense, but not frantic. There's no sex for sex's sake, or violence for violence's sake. It's an "extreme" glimpse into a time when women were treated as property-or worse-, absolute, unquestioning obedience to your leader was the norm, & strict discipline ruled a samurai's every thought & action. Disturbing? Sure...I'll go with that, but it doesn't glorify any of it.

There are plenty of popular anime that are not only built around, but revel in, perversions like pedophelia, incest, & rape. Loveless & Angel Sanctuary are the first that come to mind. Anime such as these are truly stomach-turning & downright unwatchable. I find it tragic that Shigurui is not just less popular, but also deemed less acceptable than these other totally despicable anime. This, to me, is what I find truly disturbing.

Wow...I sound like such a prude, & I am so not. Consenting adults have every right to their choice of lifestyle. Crossing this line is unacceptable. I don't ignore the fact that these ugly, horrific things happen in real life. It's worse knowing that there are people out there who not just ignore it, but actually get their jollies from it, and that's just...BENT.

Am I missing something? There was sex in this series. At the beginning with the old man fucking the shit out of the girl when he awoke from his long slumber. This wasn't suggestive or hinted at, they showed a great deal of it.

As for the series as a whole, it wasn't overly disturbing but there was a slight disturbing tone to it. If you want sexual disturbing check out Aoi Bungaku. It's a series made up of small stories and each one contains it's own disturbing twist.

Well, maybe you're missing the fact that this series was meant to be disturbing and it did a pretty damn good job at it. And I mean that kind of in an artistic sense too, it was meant to be and it's a really well made show. Maybe people are blowing it out of proportion compared to shock value horror stuff or other equally disturbing things that exist in the medium but still.

I mean it's pretty normal to find a show with a deliberate oppressive environment focusing on envy, malice, narcissism, cruelty, dismemberment, rape, and death as "disturbing". Wouldn't you agree?

Despite all that I found it very well made so I liked it, even though I'm not usually into horror kind of stuff.
