Did Goku really have to leave everyone so quickly damn

That was an alright epilogue. I liked a lot the short montage of the characters' journey. DBZ here we go

Looks like the first post is one chapter ahead again, how can this happen so often?

Goku being naive as always. At least everything ended well.

You know, there was a part of me that always wondered why Dragon Ball Z started at the Saiyan Saga. Call this shallow thinking, but I always figured Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z were segmented by Goku's age, so when I found out Goku was essentially an adult (or at least, took on that appearance) in the final arc of Dragon Ball, I did question why. I settled pretty quickly on the idea that it was because of Gohan's introduction, which I wouldn't doubt either, but there's also a much stronger sense of conclusion here than I anticipated. I did get a tad emotional when Roshi started explaining how this all came to be, with the photos of everyone when back during the earlier days followed by the snapshots of them all now, and resolving Kami's own guilt at the same time was a nice conclusion to his little character arc. Goku giving Piccolo a Senzu Bean was also a pretty perfect illustration of his character.

Then we have the women. I'm really glad Toriyama gave Bulma that one little panel to express how much Goku has grown. She's basically been in the background excluding the very first arc and parts of the Red Ribbon stuff, but she was still the first relationship Goku had, and it feels fitting to have her personally get a moment to reflect it in the "last" chapter of this portion. Then Chi-Chi, I found the whole Goku not being a fan of her squeezing to be pretty funny, and while I wouldn't say their love is, well truly love on both sides at this point, I do love him flying off with Chi-Chi at the end. It's kinda fitting that he ends up with one of the only other person in the series so far capable of riding the Flying Nimbus (Upa's the only other one I can really think of besides them two).

And now I've pretty much seen all the material from the original run of Dragon Ball. Feels pretty good to finally have that checked off my bucket list. I'd probably give this first 194 chapters a solid 8/10 it was a consistently entertaining read. Of course, still got a couple hundred chapters left, and this is all material I'm extremely familiar with (in large part due to the constant re-tellings in the numerous Dragon Ball Z video games) but I have never went through the series fully in it's original form, so I definitely do look forward to re-experiencing my childhood in this way.

*Edit*

Forgot to mention, it was nice seeing the series transition from comedy fantasy to being more action-orientated, and I like how you could just look a the different Budokai arcs to see how the series has changed over the times. The first one was filled with largely comical battles, like Namu vs. Ranfan with the only serious one really being the finale (Krillin vs. Chun too, to an extent). The 2nd Budokai arc was more mixed, the Tien matches were largely serious but the others leaned into the comedy more, like Krillin vs. Chiaotzu most noticeably. The final and most recent one, only really had Chi-Chi vs. Goku and the first half of Shen vs. Yamcha. Having three tournament arcs spread out like that showed off the changing focus in narrative pretty well.

Finished Dragon Ball. It was pretty fun, but I doubt I'll enjoy Z as much. DBZ was still a part of my childhood though. Never watched the anime nor read the manga, but played a shit ton of Budokai Tenkaichi 3 as a child.

fitting end for greet part of large story.
toriyama deciding for goku letting picollo being his enemy was great, and of course goku wouldn't be kami or anything, though i saw for miles for kami to ask that.
liked that bulma had her own personal things to say, for me she's much more main characters than kuririn and the rest, she what led this story goes.
and the whole summarising the dragon ball affection on goku was done great.

8/10 to DB

i always thought (and still thinking) that the separation between DB and DBZ is due the logic that keep sustained in DBZ than DB that changed a lot from arc to arc, in DBZ the logic of the "ki" and power-up are more of the same.

I just love the panel of Piccolo flying away laughing about his revenge, it's some real kids cartoon shit.

Great end to this arc. I love the panels from past adventures and the speech about how the dragon balls brought everyone together. And Bulma is the perfect character to comment on Goku's growth as she's been with him from what the start.

Overall, another great tournament arc even if it's not as good as the previous tournament. It's a bit boring when all of the characters in the finals are major characters. The final fight against Piccolo is probably my favourite one so far though. I just love these Dragon Ball fights where the characters get absolutely destroyed by all the damage they take. This Piccolo is also a lot more interesting than the previous one from the start. Because we've experienced the previous arc, we have some backstory for Piccolo, which was something I lacked in the previous arc. I also love this more youthful appearance of Piccolo and of course his cape and turban looks great. The revenge plot is very simple but effective.

I don't really have many opinions of Chi-Chi as a character, but I like her reintroduction in this arc. The whole marriage plot is silly and not really focused on, but it works in a manga like Dragon Ball. And even comparing this to other shounen romances, it's still better than most. Most arcs end with Goku taking off but it's great to see him take Chi-Chi with him now. And it's nice to see that Chi-Chi is still able to fly on kintoun. I think they're a good match, even if she's only in the manga for one reason now.

Bye DB, Hello DBZ.

Honestly, I found this ending a little dry. But it was a great conclusion. What's wrong with this chapter is the volume in which it is installed. It's as if Kishimoto closed the classic with volume 27, but with the initial three chapters of Shippuden. It becomes meaningless and dull. Volume 17, for example, takes the last 6, 7 of the classic and combines it with the first three, four of Z. And that's what makes this ending dry and out of place. It's okay that Toriyama isn't the king of coherence sometimes and his chapters take fewer pages than regular weekly mangas (13-14 versus 18-22), but he had to be careful to make the physical separation between the classic and Z. Lucky for the Japanese there were no spoilers in 1988 hahahahah
