First, I don't think Deadman Wonderland itself should be criticized because the anime is not the actual series, but the manga is. The anime is a mere adaptation to make the manga more popular.

However it is true that as an anime it disappointed me a little for simple facts: missing or changing events from the manga and, the most important, completely eliminating some characters that make the show much more interesting.

I mean why did they give so much importance to Yoh at the beginning and eliminated Azami?! I guess when doing the first season they didn't plan making a second one... after all Azami is really important in the next chapters.

They also completely crossed out Chaplin& old man Idaki! They clearly didn't plan on having a second season... They also were the type of characters you rarely see in a manga and made the story more exotic and... original in a strange way xD.

Also the fact that the end was so... disappointing (?) is because is not the actual end of the series... after all is practically the half of the series (well... a little less. Almost a third).

I haven't seen how all was adapted because I'm practically on the third episode so I can't talk a lot of the fighting sequences and all that ^_^U But I can say the voice selection was pretty good.

I thought it was really terrible. It got especially bad as time went on, introducing way too many characters without developing them and lots of drawn-out shounen-style talking in battles. The ending also sucked, but the manga is finishing up, so maybe they'll do a second series.

I had a good impression of it from the first few episodes but at some point I started to lose interest. Overall I didn't quite like it.

Pretty much what you said.I lost interest around episode 8.I'm just finishing this because I'm so close to the ending anyway.

Just finished Deadman Wonderland and saw this forum. I wasn't horrifically disappointed but was somewhat disappointed. It started off good and there are a few things it did very well like animation, the gore and the concept. But the series really needed to be twice as long for more character development. And I hate to say it, but the ending is honestly the worst ending of anime I have seen so far. I mean cmon, so Ganta doesn't escape the prison, find out Shiro was the Red Man and the director still lives?! Too many things left way unresolved. Overall tho, I still liked it but it could have been alot better. The fights with the undertakers were awesome and Nagi was a badass character. His backstory was really sad and his fight scenes were amazing.

"Horrifically" (?!) Really? It's actually one of my favourites...the problem with the anime is it ended too quickly, it should have gone for at least 5 seasons. I read that the creators got pregnant and the whole thing, including the manga, was put on hold. I guess the network picked it up as a trial run and unfortunately, it wasn't renewed. Worse, it was hastily crammed into 12 episodes, that did leave viewers wondering what exactly was going on, unless they had been reading the manga.

However, speaking of the manga, which is pretty awesome btw, does go for quite a bit longer and gives you the whole story that the anime never did or could.

As for your comparisons to Elfin Lied, etc., I don't need to rehash why you are wrong in pretty much all of them as there were quite a few people who already responded to your post & explained why. I also find comparisons to be helpful if you're looking for something in that genre, but with the tens of thousands of anime/manga/tv shows, finding something that doesn't share some qualities with another would be mission impossible. Expecting to find something like that would be a disappointment...

You don't happen to know why Shiro in her Red Man state decided to kill Ganta classmates in the first place, do you? I just realized I never knew why.

I just hope for a remake of the anime, because it's not even the fact that I don't want DW to have a second season, it's the fact that I don't think it can. The anime left out characters like Azami, Chaplin and Idaki, all of which are extremely vital to the later chapters. I feel like the only thing the anime did well was the first episode (Hell, I kinda think it was handled in a better way than how the manga handled it) and the fight between Ganta and Senji

I agree with the OP. This started good but spiraled into bad from worse. And Hanazawa Kana's voice is so annoying! She hams throughout the series and I keep thinking Mayuri (Steins Gate) is Shiro!! Grrr

Please people get your facts straight the original Death Race came out in 1975 the 2008 version was a remake. If anything Dead man Wonderland got some inspiration from Death Race but to be fair Death Race is not the first thing to come up with the idea of prisoners fighting for their lives look to history for that original idea.

I don't know man, I thought the show was pretty interesting, it had a mysterious plot, interesting characters, and despite your claims I thought it was pretty original. I have never seen that other thing you were talking about, but I have seen death race and I never once thought "hey this is just like that movie with Sylvester Stallone, where he drove around with the tommy guns on his car!" Personally I think that the first 12 episodes were good, the 13th wasn't bad for filler but clearly the writers weren't expecting the show to end right there when they wrote it and you can't really judge an incomplete series as a whole anyways. Regardless we are all entitled to our own opinions. (but everyone has to admit that the show had a pretty kick ass theme song)

I was actually also disappointed. So I watched this and thought "well this gotta be good", and then it revolves around the theme of revenge and deadly game. Then it turns into something like blood fest anime with no purposes. Also sadly it did not have a season 2 and leaving season 1 hanging. So what? Shiro is the red man? She have split personality and killed everyone except the MC? So much unresolved questions.

I'm new to anime so I started out watching Heaven's Lost Property and took a break from it. I just finished Dead Man Wonderland and I was sooo confused by the ending.

On a brighter note:
Contrary to popular opinions, I thought Ganta being the crybaby and weakling he is was not a demerit to the anime at all, it highlighted his personality excellently and captures the theme when he conquers his fears to stand up for his friends brilliantly. Ganta's naivety was also an aspect that shouldnt be critiqued harshly, as it is reasonable because he's just your average unintelligent kid. Overall this anime was an amazing journey the whole way (apart from the ending), I loved it and would definitely recommend it to anyone who enjoys an action packed thriller and psychological anime.

It was not completely horrible, but I was pretty disappointed. Don't remember exactly what I didn't like about it, probably the protagonist before everything. Also the story makes no fucking sense.

I was %100 dissapointed, the thing is, i already knew what would happen after eps 5, i didnt read the manga just guessed, and i was right, i mean nothing good happens in this anime, i was hoping shiro was a love interest but nah then the flower girl then nah, i mean nothing good happens in this anime, sure the concept was good, i just dont think the idea of shiro being the red man a good idea, if it was you it would of been better or even the director, its just that shiro was the only light in this anime for me, then she was the enemy, obviously i was dissapointed..

I wanted to adore this series but it ended at a horrendous point and left everything unresolved. It soured any interest I had in reading the manga to get the full story.

This didn't feel like a season, it felt like the first half of a 26 episode series.

I really liked it. I hear the Manga really screwed up, but as for the anime I really liked it and thought it had potential to be great. I think it was original and I liked the character design.

I wouldn't say disappointed, just a little dissatisfied, especially knowing that there isn't a 2nd season. This is from somebody who hasn't read the manga as well. It was a bit predictable and the pacing was slightly off at times, but I enjoyed the concept of the series. The gore was awesome as well.
