I'm looking for friends, and getting involved in the community. I'm also trying to watch more anime while balancing reviews, and I love recommendations.
I went ahead and put in favorite characters/series, but since I've seen so few series/movies so far I expect that to change. Still gives you an idea of what I like.
About my reviews:
I try to write review with no/minor spoilers. Scores are 70% story, 15% animation, and 15% audio (OST/voice cast). All of my reviews are on
http://www.anime4649.com, plus screenshots, music, download.
I don't quite grade stuff the same as MAL:
0 – 9%: Atrocious
10 – 19%: Terrible
20 – 29%: Bad
30 – 39%: Mediocre
40 – 49%: Acceptable
50 – 59%: Okay
60 – 69%: Good
70 – 79%: Great
80 – 89%: Excellent
90 – 100%: Masterpiece
I also tend to suppress my scores a little more than most MAL users. So for instance a lot of stuff I give a "Good" (60-69) because that's all a lot of stuff is in my opinion - good. Hopefully this can help people using my reviews distinguish more what they might want to watch. If I give something an 8 or higher, I recommend it pretty strongly.

Atleast your Replace a word in an anime title with Ass is still ongoing.
"Once Shinkai does a film with both the build up and separation, I think it'd be pretty good"
I'd say ef comes close, albeit it's not a film but rather two cours. There is definitely the build up in the first series, and the separation in the latter series.
No problem :)
I am not so much bothered by the "junior high students" aspect since it's not rare to have a boyfriend/girlfriend by then (here at least), but I do find this widely-used premise deeply troubling. The thrill of romance is in the chase, but if they are already in love from the beginning the premise undercuts the worthiness of coupling/shipping.
Another reviewer also pointed out a plot hole in Hoshi no Koe; if they have wormhole technology to make light years seem like seconds, why are texts still delivered at regular speeds? At the very least, cell phone carriers can contract with some intergalactic shipping company to deliver texts at a faster pace, albeit at a higher price.
In the end, "This all felt terribly melodramatic" pretty much sums it up.
Though I suspect that part of the problem is the short length of his works. He did storyboard for the ef series, and I especially love two scenes in ef - A Tale of Memories.
Perhaps. Though even if it's not depressing I would still give it a 5. I just didn't feel anything.
"the value of understanding our past"
On an unrelated note, for some reason this reminds me of Hoshi wo Ou Kodomo.
I recall someone floating in a pile of debris at the end?
Unfortunately, you are talking to the wrong person on sci-fi. Very few sci-fi stories interest me, and so far no other series has kept me awake at night just thinking about it like GitS has. Heck, I have even put Casshern Sins on hold, which started out like a sci-fi version of Mushishi (a lovely, pensive piece of art BTW) in an apocalyptic future.
I know you are looking for a critical evaluation of Pale Cocoon, but the only good reason I can give you is that I didn't find it interesting at all. In such anime, the themes are central to one's enjoyment, and I never connected with the historical angle in Pale Cocoon. I tend to look more towards the future (ironically, I don't have much luck enjoying futuristic sci-fis :) instead of the past.
BTW I noticed that you have completed Usagi Drop. Any thoughts on that?
Edit:
Scratch that last one. I am getting senile....
Looking back on it, it's kinda similar to Shinkai's style. Uses pretty animation to (hopefully) evoke feelings but generally a miss for me. In addition very few sci fi anime interest me; GitS: SAC set the bar high and I have yet to find a sci fi series that can rival GitS in depth, especially cyberpunk realism.
What specifically do you like about Pale Cocoon? Not trying to undermine your enjoyment here; I am just wondering what others like about anime that I personally didn't enjoy.
IIRC Funi licensed it for U.S. I wonder if they will stream it eventually.
Arise? Not any time soon, no. I generally wait for the entire series to finish (been waiting a while for the monogataris now, and new seasons just keep on coming) before starting. Plus I am not digging the new design for Major. Though the action scenes are still as good as before, from what I saw in the PVs.
I am contemplating on rewatching the SACs first as well. Though considering Arise is set in 2027 instead of 2029, I doubt there's any plot need to watch SAC first.
That's a scary profile pic btw lol. Nina was certainly a creeper.
