This show is like the anime equivalent of Mcguyver. The historical part of the story made it much more interesting than it wouldve been. Despite the show being so grounded in reality, it feels animation is a perfect medium for the story arcs here.

"...our faces marked by toil, by deceptions, by success, by love; our weary eyes looking still, looking always, looking anxiously for something out of life, that while it is expected is already gone – has passed unseen, in a sigh, in a flash – together with the youth, with the strength, with the romance of illusions.” - Joseph Conrad ('Youth')

I like this show too, but don't know about animation being perfect for it. The heavy snow in this setting would have looked good live-action. Real extreme weather shows up well on film, and Keaton's background art doesn't have enough intensity to compensate. Then again that isn't a limit on the medium itself, so I guess it could go either way.

animation itself is OK, but what I was talking about was anime conventions and "behaviorism" exhibited in the show is what gives it a unique touch that live action would probably not have been able to. I'm not really good with words, so its hard to explain...but you know what I mean, right?

I think so. Like the art is realistic to a degree but not photorealistic, the stories are believable but just a little stylized. In Keaton's world, pocket diaries will stop bullets and professors can double as adventurers. Something like the medium strengthening our suspension of disbelief.

yes, all that plus the related fact of the sense of morality and ethos depicted that would probably not have had the same effect in live action.

LOL

Another nice episode: good characters, and a treasure story that could be something out from Corto Maltese: believable and yet not shallow. Plus I'm really starting to like the way the episodes are built (mystery stories style) with a development, and a final twist/revelation at the end. Gives a sort of a right tempo to the whole thing.

The old man's yarn was a good story so I had to check whether all of it was made up. It seems so, mostly. His father's name, Nikita Volkonsky, was actually the name of a Russian general in the Napoleonic wars.

I didn't find a rumour about the gold being transported by boat. However, it's well known that a lot of gold went missing during the revolution. In 2017 there was a report in Siberian Times about a large stash of Romanov gold found in an old rail tunnel, worth just under 30 billion dollars. I gather it was just an April Fool's joke, but it shows that the stories and myths about the fate of Romanov treasures are still alive in that part of the world.

So yeah, a great episode just realistic enough to pique my curiosity to find out more about the topic.

Love! Semionov is the very telltale of a life well lived, good episode.
