So...what happened? I was sure everyone died but then those last pages. I think it was just to show us that she COULD have lived happily.
But then again I really don't give a damn. Pretty boring and generic read. Didn't care for it at all.

Reading this manga again and i have to say, i cried again at the end *wipes a tears*
ohhhh Akio!!

I just wanna give her a hug :(

Anyway... Loved it, i don't see how you wouldn't understand the end and that it was a 'boring read'... this manga really got to me. I don't think most of you's were paying attention to it really were you?
Need some explaining guys??

Akio has to live with that arm for who knows how long. She was on the brink of death when she sees', her family, her friends, even Suho who have already died calling out to her to come with them... to the other world when, actually, she wakes up to find that she is still alive. However she smiled at the end...

To me, i think she still had hope... a sign... to start all over again, a new life... but to have that arm just makes us pity her. With that arm, it's bringing her back to life making her carry on, even though similar things might happen again she has to go through it because that arm is pulling her back into reality. That monster that lives in her arm will always be there.

I don't know how some of you guys can't even feel what Akio is actually going through and i don't even know if you actually understand this manga at all but, it's really sad to see some of these reactions to this wonderful piece of art work that i've just read.

It's as if you guys don't have feelings at all, reading some piece of manga as if the mangaka hasn't put any effort into it makes me sick. Not knowing how to appreciate something that is right in front of us because when its gone its gone...

I could go on and on but some of you might be 'offended' by this. But i love the mangaka, because i understand it. Go back to your fluffy romance stuff if you really want to understand love, hope and the meaning to 'not give up'. Because i certainly don't see it there.

Good read. I'm under the impression Aiko survived while everyone else who were with her died. It's too bad Sudo got killed as well, but at least his words were able to help Aiko move on in life. I really do enjoy bittersweet endings.

A good read indeed, but I would have enjpyed this more if the manga had been longer. Some characters were not believable and/or didn't get enough time on this manga. Not bad at all, but I saw some wasted potential here.

Okay I'm scratching my head asking myself what the hell happened at the end there. It looked like more of a happy ending but she was apparently dead?

Weird/5
Final rating of the manga: 5/10. Sorry but I thought it'd be a bit better if it made more sense.

Man she didn't survive, they said earlier in the manga that she'd die without the freakish arm (Chapter 8 pg8)...
She had her legs and freakish arm blown off (how are people missing this? Page 33 people!).
In her passed out state she was searching for her loved ones and searching for 'the light' (dying), she briefly wakes up and smiles at a shadow that's strangely like Sudo (he really wanted to see her smile), and hey, she was in incredible pain so it's showing she managed to relieve that pain and feel peace... and it's left to your imagination.

The image of her walking around is too 'glowy' for me so it looks ghostly, and no one would be calling her but the boy who would have wanted to meet her, and sorry to be a downer, but Sudo's dead so no one can introduce them.

One thing that bothered me was I couldn't get a handle on the timeline of the original experiments, the years seemed all messed up. But I haven't given it much thought and I'm lazy so...

So, yeah, she died. BUT, she died peacefully, and had the long awaited smile before passing on. ^_^

I too think she died in the end (notice how the left arm was usually a bit wider and stronger, while in the last - dreamy - section is was perfectly symmetrical with the right one). Everything else has already said by qwan (two post above), so no need to repeat it ;-)

Ultimately, speculation could be made for both sides, but it seems that the author intends for it to be up to our interpretation. Ambiguity is one of the better ways to end a story, in particular tragedies. In these cases, the ending is up to what you believe, and I appreciate that the author gave us that agency.

However, like many others have said, the story itself was much too fast paced, and I think if the author invested in at least half the amount of chapters of Eifen Lied, this could have been a great manga. The premise, the complexity, and the characters were all there and hitting the right spots, but the execution was too fast paced.

I personally only came to this manga after reading another of the mangaka's works, Sugar Bullets, because I loved the mangaka's art style there. A glance at Variante's gorgeous cover will indisputably prove the mangaka's art style is one of the most unique in the entire medium. The same art style exists here, but aside from the cover art, it wasn't as detailed, although it does seem like it improved in the late chapters. The true tragedy is that the mangaka seemingly hasn't been active for years. While the story was rushed, the astonishingly amazing art was truly a treat.

So, we are left to interpret on what really happened to Aiko then? I believe that she survived from her severe wounds, but that could have been her hallucinating before she eventually died from said wounds. However, that doesn't explained about how we see Aiko in a city alove and well with her left arm and both legs back. Does anything have their own interpretation on this? Please let me know in a PM or in this discussion page. Also, there are some plot holes and the ending sure is rushed as hell. Like, where the hell is Aiko's body, is it dead or is she still alive as we see her at the end?

I like tragedies..
You can interpretation 2 ending from this ambiguity last chapter.
1. Aiko dead with no regret and the arms help her make hallucinations where she can smile with a joy and happiness.
2. Consider Oumi.kun lay in wait page 24/46 to save aiko and regeneration power from 'i didnt want to die', I can slightly believe aiko get happy end with stay alive
I more believe on number 1 route tough

@qwan because she is a monster and her arm gives her crazy regenerative abilities as seen by her surving all her injuries even self harm. Theres really no way to answer if she is alive or not given how the author left it which i hate when story writers do that. But while i think she may have not survived i want to believe she did and got a second chance after all the misery she endured. Also theres at least 3 survivors that know her that could be calling out to her or it could just be a new friend she made during her new peaceful life. People calling this managa average are hilarious cause its far from that. 8/10
