Well I wasn't going to but since everyone is commenting about the cry amount, I didn't cry, but I don't really cry in general so...
I watched this wayyy before, like one of my first anime somehow? kind of wild, maybe not if I watched anime in 2012. But the thing is, for an anime I technically haven't watched in 10 years, I surely remember a lot of scenes, like not the content but the actual dialogue and the only thing I rewatched a lot was the ending, so it feels like this shit was on TV and I watched it all the time lol, cause it was amazing how I remembered most of the jokes. That being said, i actually didn't remember it, so it's like muscle memory, I must have rewatched it quite some times when I first saw it I guess, for some reason, but yeah at least 6 years without seeing it I'm guessing.
Obviously I came here and was like "ok let's see how stupid people are misunderstanding Kanade's intentions" and oh boy, she literally just attacked people that shot her lol, they were really stupid huh. Like I don't mind it, but yeah feels kind of silly, specially the part where (I will never forget this also thought it back then) THEY MADE A FUCKING GUN FACTORY to fight her, all these operations all these people, fighting cause Yurippe came up with this bullshit. But I can't blame her I guess, you are in the afterlife, and people start vanishing, obviously you have to start making hypothesis. I also didn't like back then and now the whole "making guns out of dirt" and using a program called Angel Player to change the world, like it was so fucking dumb Otonashi believed till the last episode that Kanade was an angel, "you mean she isn't special? she is a human that can change his body...with a computer program?"
Also in a way, the Brigade wasn't wrong though, like at the reveal with Otonashi recovering his memories and Kanade revealing that you can just move on after you complete what you wanted to do, I just thought "weren't they like, against being reborn, wasn't that also the problem? like they knew that you move on!" I guess the only reveal was that the Angel wasn't evil and you being obliterated just meant...your spirit gets to rest, surely you don't want to be a barnacle or any other sea creatures but, it felt pretty on the nose already what they described. I do like that they might have know but still struggled against God cause they didn't like that their lives felt unfair, that they suffered too much and that it was just too cruel so they want to keep living, in a way creating the paradise in the school was their goal, cause they wanted to keep living there forever. Personally I think I would be like Yui, I would take advantage of the infinite time to just do all sorts of things, and when I'm satisfied I would just move on, and see what's next.
Hinata, my goat, Yui's dream was to get married! You can't even fulfill that in a fucking school, but he straight up go there, and told her dead in the eye that he would marry her, I found his character so abnoxious at times but I really liked that scene. Same with Otonashi's dream of saving people, of course dude can't move on, there's no sick people LOL. Also damn the fact Kanade has his heart is so ironic and poetic at the same time, I really didn't remember that, must be the only thing I forgot completely.
Characters by order of how much I liked them (only the brigade, and from the band just the vocalists and guitarist, not the support girl tho):
Kanade(Kuuderes FTW) > Yuri > Naoi (I love him a lot, glad they used him a lot, sad to see him get bullied) > TK (I always think of TK not gonna lie, his randomness is something I value a lot) > Shiina (she's hilarious THE BROOM ON HER FINGER) > Otonashi (wild to see him as Araragi now lol) > Noda (I always loved him having a halberd, he's also like Shiina, hilarious, his voice is surprisingly fresh too) > Hisako (as cool as a support character can get, forgot how much dialogue she has) > Iwasawa(I love that the VA has 2 ROLES of a musician vocalist red head girl in Key adaptations lol) > Matsushita the 5th > Ooyama (I appreciate him not gonna lie) > Yui (annoying but I do like her, lovebirds must be next to each other) > Hinata > Takamatsu (flying buddies must be next to each other) > Christ > Fujimaki(most forgettable dude in the brigade, fishing dude or gun making dude has more personality, and is also dumber than Noda somehow?)
I honestly don't get why people don't like this anime that much, maybe it's just elitiest haters like always, personally I was surprised that there was not a single weak episode, they were all really entertaining, heck I watched it in 2 days. I will keep it at a 9 though, cause I feel like the story has some flaws for it to be 10 and some stuff was annoying but it still is one of my favorites, definitely my Key favorite, Charlotte a close second I guess (I hate Little Busters, will never watch the crybait that is Clannad and Kamisama one was fine but the ending i didn't like).
Alright now to go read some theories! I knew Otonashi and Kanade reflected the dude that originally made the program, but for a second when there were no NPCs, I was freaking out, I thought "OMG IS HEEEE THE CREATOR??? AND JUST RECOVERED HIS MEMORIES?? AND KANADE CAME BACK AND HE'S GONNA LOSE HER AGAIN" then I saw the NPCs and was like nope, he's just similar. I do remember some clips of him being like original Naoi, a cruel student president, really sad if he didn't get to move on, like all he wanted was to help people, why would his reason to stay changed after death and now be that he wants to meet his beloved, I didn't get the bug when Yuri talked about it with mysterious boy, like the bug is that because he had amnesia he didn't remember he was already fulfilled and could go whenever he wanted? But now he can't cause he met someone? Yeah kind of weird, but you can't really make rules when it comes to an afterlife, you have to make it vague af...ugh, I would love to see that one day
