Misaki is an interesting one. Might be someone to keep an eye on.

I think this episode brings together new bonds with different schools. This was also a great opportunity for Hana to build more experience and connections with others. Seems like a buildup episode so perhaps we can see bigger performances later this season. I'm cheernig for Hana here. She still has more to prove.

One of the best episodes yet. It wouldn’t be a sports anime without rival schools and cross-school friendships being made. Lot of good stuff in this episode and I’m happy for Hana reaching out and making new friends! But more importantly, I’m glad An and Misaki made up and can finally move forward! You can’t tell me Misaki isn’t gay af for An tho 😂 not one straight in this series idc what the author does with her Yuribait gimmick again.

As soon as Misaki opened her mouth and started to say Natsue I knew that was her childhood friend but man that picnic was so rough to watch. You can tell An was jealous of Misaki so every time Misaki put herself down to praise An and crediting An with her success, it made An feel even worse because it’s like Misaki doesn’t even appreciate her abilities. Was really worried she’d snap on Misaki and it hurt so much seeing her breakdown and cry like that. It’s funny how two Tuesday seasonals this week show people struggling to deal with their old friends growing up. An was just comparing Misaki’s current recitation to the middle school version. Of course it’ll be different because she doesn’t have her childhood friend!

Very sweet make up at the end and Misaki’s recitation is amazing, but man An has to learn how to be more direct with her feelings! Just tell them you wanna be called by your first name silly 😂

Also, Botanboko got overshadowed because of all the relationship drama this week but she’s insanely talented too. So many people Hana can learn from as she strives to improve her readings. Like the teacher said, she has a ton of natural talent but her technical abilities need refinement!

Really nice to see Hana made a new friend and it turns out it is Natsue's childhood friend and it was nice seeing them hanging out together.

Most of the drama in this show just seems to come from Natsume being a very dislikable person.

Hana making two new friends and both from different schools at that. Natsue's just a little to completive, pushing her friend away like that when Misaki's just a good girl.

I wasn't satisfied with how they went about the ending, could have done a little better.

Oh no! They keep telling the female MC "Haruyama, Hana" to change how she reads, but that is a very bad idea in my opinion.

A girl even said "it was tiring to hear her read", but that is not true at all.

They let the character "Botanboko, Pokoko" read the entire piece, although it sounded nice, as soon as Hana started reading, she immediately blew away the competition, but then the teacher interrupts her, telling her to not have any expression in her reading and to only read the words according to the stress, which is bad advice in my opinion.

The reason why the Japanese language sounds so pleasing to the ear, is not because people read it like an A.I., perfectly emotionless, but when their is passion in the voice of a speaker or reader.

When everyone else reads, even if they have a nice voice, it sounds so flat, straight, lifeless, colorless, staid, it is sad how much this takes away from the sound and meaning of the words being read.

From episode 1, when Hana recites, it is not just her pleasant voice, but how she reads, immersing herself into the character, making the words fly off the page, full of life color shine, painting in our minds the very meaning of the words, and making the Japanese language sound so beautiful.

That's why that section at the end of episode 1 sounds so incredible and why I have listened to that part multiples times since.

Telling her to not read as she does, is not improving her reading, it is hampering it by taking away the special quality that only she has.

If they make Hana start reading like that girl on stage and other people, then I will very upset.

I think everyone should learn from Hana's way of reading instead.
Note: I don’t lazily watch 3-5 episodes, biasedly compare to other anime, or unfairly judge by surface level similarities. With every anime I start, I watch the entire series, both Japanese Sub & English Dub, then judge each anime based on what they present, to give an honest and fair rating.

Am I the only one getting a feeling that this entire series feels like a collection of short stories that are tied by the characters going to the competition? Not saying that this is bad at all. It's rather unique, but it feels like the story is a bit over the place, with some characters taking up all of the space in one episode and then disappearing completely in the following.

Otherwise, this episode was super interesting in the background of the characters and to see how other students prepare for it.
I can't get over how fresh/neat every shot looks

(Did Natsue and Misaki's interactions not feel like Mizore and Nozomi's dynamic in Hibike? Albeit with an even more one-sided friendship)

Well said. For some reason, it feels as if Hana speaks in such a different way compared to others - her VA seems to have put in some fantastic work.
Or maybe the show intended for her to sound different.. She has many micro changes in her tone, it stands out

Go figure, an episode not set in that broadcast room ends up being not boring an actually decent. Also like that it was more or less centered around a side character and not our main.

Btw, good SB done by Shibuya this episode.

Aoi Koga as a chinese girl was not on my bingo.

Also, so many people hate Anne. I get why, but I still disagree as they are missing a lot of points.

Highlight of this episode was Kumori Misaki, An's childhood friend, and her relationship with An. An means the world to her, and Misaki is struggling in an environment without An being there for her. Albeit different circumstances and personalities they remind me a lot of Mizore and Nozomi in the Euphonium series, where Misaki is learning to fly on her own like the blue bird in Liz to Aoi Tori. Then we also have Botanboko Pokoko being introduced a memorable name who won the previous year's regional competition in Kyoto.

I like the new characters and the fact that Hana has already made some friends. It was interesting to see more of An, but with so few episodes left, I feel like the way the story is pacing is going, it won't be as fast as it should be for the NHK Cup. While I would love to see another season, I doubt it will happen for this type of anime.

The episode was, I don't know. It wasn't bad but it just felt a little off for some reason, perhaps a pacing thing? It's hard to articulate why but it just didn't click with me like the previous two or three have.

While the episode in and of itself is fine I feel like the show hasn't gone anywhere. Natsue is still annoying in ways that aren't compelling flaws and we're clearly not going to have achieved anything by episode 12. I don't see myself sticking around for another season.

It's a relatively chill episode. Out girl Hana wasn't able to show her wares because she has some technical points to work on. Plus, it's a reconciliation of sorts between An and Misaki.

Speaking of which, with Misaki, we have the voice of Fern and with the Chinese girl, Kaguya. I would have loved to hear from them more, but it looks like they will have limited screentime.

@thewaflwizard I understand what you mean. The story gets cut in strange ways, just like in this episode with Misaki. They have been hinting at their strained relationship for some time and then it was somehow resolved within seconds. Misaki was struggling with recitation and after a short conversation that told us only things which we already heard before and did not expand on them much, she was completely fine. End of story, arc finished, now onto the next story...
Last episode explored Touga as a character, but some parts were resolved too quickly and now we will not see him until the training camp ends.
It feels like the only truly meaningful arcs were the first one with Hana and the one with Akiyama. There really was potential to do more with these characters.

Pokoko's name is hard to pronounce, but easy to remember. I won't be forgetting how strong her recitation was, which makes no surprise to how well she has done in previous competitions. She was one of many new characters introduced in this episode when Hana and her clubmates went to a workshop for recitation and announcing.

Hana was quick to make new friends with Xiangling and Misaki. The latter was more important since she was friends with An back during their middle school years, but it also opened up some drama-filled moment between the two. Misaki was able to make it to nationals because she followed An's advice faithfully, but I guessing for An, it did make it sound like Misaki wasn't crediting herself for her own efforts, which you can understand as to why An was disappointed.

Thankfully, the drama wasn't around for long as Misaki was able to replicate her recitation of the past with style and she also vowed to do her best to improve. Misaki was very quick to encourage Hana to call each other by their first names, which An was interested in that a bit before back-pedalling. It was a cute moment that made me smile. =)

With that settled, I look forward to seeing what Hana will learn from this workshop. Her teacher was spot on to praise her voice, but she was also correct to point out Hana's lack of refinement, which does hold her back from getting the most out of her voice. If she's does able to improve in that area, then her performances will only get better and better.

@deltahalo241 I felt the same. Something was off about this episode like it was missing charm of previous episodes.
I think it might be because before it was focused on close-knit group (and living on isolated island) and felt more personal. Now it opens up, the group of characters increases and competition plot develops so it stars feeling more similar to a bunch of other anime series.

So is this some of that GL-teasing/yuri-baiting that Ayano Takeda is known for (I never watched Sound Euphonium, but I know its reputation)? If so, it wasn’t as bad I thought it would be.

Thank goodness Anne is not as hostile a tsundere as we see in most anime. It would make this series have a totally different feel if she was just a regular antagonist.

@Myetx Having had some time to sit on it, I think I've nailed down what the issue is. It is indeed with the pacing, normally this whole conflict with the missing phone strap and the reconciliation between An and Misaki would be something spread out over an episode or two but in this episode it was all crammed in to about 15 minutes of screen time.

So we have the tension between An & Misaki, Misaki's bad performance, the missing phone charm, the reconciliation and Misaki's great performance and it's all just happening one after the other, there's not enough time to let the viewer soak in what's happening or to provide the characters with a sufficient amount of time to improve, in Misaki's case this means that she's bad at recitation, cries a bit and then is great at it again.

The issues aren't helped by the fact that we've only just met Misaki this episode, we have no emotional investment in the character barring what she adds to An's development, so her overcoming her recitation issue lacks impact. Additionally Hana felt extra passive, basically sitting on the sidelines and not doing much to facilitate An & Misaki's reconnection at the end. She was just sort of there.

Hana definitely has some stiff competition among her such as newly introduced blonde girl Botanboko that can do excellent recitations and likes getting attention. Also got to meet Natsue's childhood friend Misaki whom Natsue acted cold around but at the end it looks like they made up, high school drama I suppose.

Completely agree with this part. I wasn't interested in Misaki's character and she was a bit too much.
You are right about pace but it wasn't a big issue for me comparing to lack of enthusiasm about new characters.
And previous few episodes were very good so this one just couldn't match the level.
