I wanted to watch Clannad for a long time now since this is supposed to be one of the best romances ever. The problem though is that people on the internet portray Clannad as a story that will destroy you ๐Ÿ’€ and I'm not quite sure if I really want to be emotionally devastated right now because I have a lot going on with University etc. So I guess my question is how sad Clannad was to you guys and if it also impacted your actual life? This might be a stupid question to some people, but I just wanted to ask before watching.

I watched Clannad a long time ago and I barely remember what it was about. I struggled with watching it but it's not because it was sad, but because it was slightly boring for me. I'd say, give it a try, but if you're easily impressed by anime emotions, then get your tissues ready 'cause you might cry. It depends on whether sad anime impact you in some way. For me, I'm more impacted by live action series and sometimes not even then. It depends.

Season 1 is pretty much just comedy and slice of life and the romance is built up overtime, but Season 2 (After Story) is extremely sad at times.

let me tell you something it is indeed heartbreaking but not traumatizing or something like that. you would cry not in sadness but also there would be happy tears coming out of your eyes and you would progress watching the series. for me it didn't really impact my real life that much I was really depressed at a point but after some episode I was crying in Happiness. the ending is something you would be happy with. and yeah maybe that crying would help you let it all out. if you're depressed and don't want depressing stuff maybe try watching barakamon.

The thing about emotionally destroying you is completely wrong. It's obviously sad (after story) but not traumatizing rather It's hopeful. When I cried watching Clannad AS, it was a good cry. So, don't worry and watch this.

First season can be a little bland but definitely worth it for after story.

Nah it’s normal bro but I watched it way back in 2017 or maybe 18? My concern wud be the quality of animation, as u might be accustomed to better quality anime by now , so watching it with an art style of mid 2000s might be a challenge if u recently started watching anime like in 2021( Clannad’s animation is extremely well for its tome though but doesn’t hold that well today for a lot of audience). I don’t find much of a difference in high quality anime of 2010s to what is being made now. A slightly improved animation but still the same level and still watchable.
Anyways I want a reboot of Clannad by ufotable like with fate stay ๐Ÿ˜‚

The first season is more of a slice-of-life with humor and romance, in the first season we have the entire construction of the romance.

From the second onwards it is a little more melancholic, focusing more on the protagonist's drama and some very dramatic events. My experience was very good, the end of the second season made me cry a lot.

I'd agree that the first Clannad is boring and so is the first half of the after stories. it doesn't really get good or sad until the end of the after stories. I do feel that it's worth the wait. I remember going to bed crying after watching it.

it's both sad and happy.

You will likely cry, and probably more than once.
After Story hits like a truck, but lots of the most emotional moments for me were actually happy ones. The sad moments sting for sure, but it's the moments of joy that get the tears rolling.

It's another level of sadness, I watched this after the first season and finished at the end of July 2024. all I can say that this anime traumatised me because I was crying like a bitch, it was the saddest anime I ever watched from key and anime, but this was definitely one of the best slice of life animes I have ever watched.

In the first season there is one or two sad things, but nothing too heavy, while the second season was made to destroy emotions from the beginning.

The Clannad series is an absolute work of art, just watch it. It gets sad, it gets depressing, but it will make you laugh, make you think, leave you in awe as well. You could never predict the place it will take you from the first few episodes... and you will never forget it.
At least that was the case for me.

Most important thing is to be in the right mindset while watching. Wouldn't wanna watch Clannad if you easily get bored or have a short attention span. Tbh Clannad is a great watch even if you've been feeling anxious lately, it's packed with valuable life lessons

It's the only anime that made me cry on rewatch, and twice at that, and one of only 2 anime that made me cry at all.

So, pretty sad, but if it has an impact on your real life, it's more likely to be the positive kind than the negative kind

clannad may have its tough moments, but its not purely tragic, it offers hope and healing. people in the replies are exaggerating its sadness, its more about the emotional journey rather than just being sad for the sake of it. it isnt a constant sad, its a mix of heartfelt, emotional highs and lows. if you handled violet evergarden, which is emotionally intense but also hopeful, then you should be able to appreciate the balance of emotional moments in clannad too. also theres a lot of moe and funny shit in it too. something a lot of sad anime dont have.

if youre still feeling unsure, then i might suggest watching some more sad/emotional/romance anime before clannad to ‘prepare’ yourself. such as: Anohana, Plastic Memories, WorldEnd, Orange, and Your Lie in April. im basing this according to your list. idk how accurate it is tho it doesn’t seem to show angel beats on the 'unique to notoshin' list. personally i wouldnt recommend angel beats anyway, since that hurt me more than clannad. but from what I see on your list, you've already watched some emotional anime, so I dont think you need to worry about clannad being any worse.

if youre worried that might this fuck you over even more on top university stress, then id suggest watching this during the holidays. i thinks thats what i done. probably the safest bet. you can also enjoy it more.

also how much an anime affects you really depends on the person. for me, anime with 'sad/emotional' endings hit harder than those that are sad throughout—its the difference between sadness and misery. that’s why angel beats fucked me up the most, even though the ending isnt exactly tragic. also, i don’t want to spoil anything, but clannad does NOT have a sad ending.

this is definitely a must watch anime btw.

(sorry for any mistakes, i dont usually write anything long here)

@Notoshin thanks for your thorough review for me ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿป. I think I'll take your advice and watch Clannad once I don't have to worry about Uni stress. I don't wanna end up in a depressed state for a week afterwards, like I did after watching Steins;Gate. Although Steins;Gate isn't really known for being sad and has a happy ending, it absolutely destroyed me (good thing I watched it during summer break), so Clannad might do the same to me.

It is not "sad". By this I don't mean that there are no tear jerking moments in it. But solely categorizing Clannad as a "sad" anime is incorrect. It offers a wide range of emotions and themes that all come together to create this very poignant and mystical atmosphere that is Clannad.

Tbh, the plot isn't very complicated but the story flows smoothly with suited pacing, acquiring that melancholic vibe bit by bit as the story progresses. So just consider it as a slice of life that deals with much deeper and realistic themes than your average high school romcom.

( and also The actual sadness doesn't kick in until the second season and even then, it's not until around epispdes 15/16)

@GagzxAizen I agree, dreams are dreams, you're free to wish for them to be fulfilled. You're entitled to your opinion, no matter how questionable they are. But given the context that your comment was on this forum post, your comments comes off as misleading. Clannad is already known for its beautiful animation. Kyoto Animation, the studio behind it, are also known for their consistently beautiful animation. Their ability to create emotionally rich visuals, that perfectly complement their stories.

But then you suggest Ufotable. The studio known for their unlimited budget works. The studio known for their high-budget action-packed anime. Yes, they should definitely divert their efforts to remaking a well-established classic that doesn’t even fit their style. They should definitely risk ruining the aesthetic of Clannad. They should definitely remake a masterpiece.

Ufotable isn't the only good studio bro.

Clannad's animation is timeless and made by the absolute goats at KyoAni, no need for a reboot when the style so perfectly fits both the VNs art and the story of clannad.
