One of the greatest sins of subbing is when you have a character named (as an example) Saotome Ranma and the voices say "Saotome-san" but the subs say "Ranma". This crap is ALL OVER this show. These subs are damn near unwatchable and we need a decent alternative that isn't butchering the dialog like this.

I don't see how simply subbing names differently makes them "unwatchable."

I know why they're doing it and it's distracting but I wouldn't call it unwatchable. I guess a better compromise would be using just the surname.

Translating something to accurately convey what's being said while also having it make sense in the language you're translating to and for the audience that will watch it in that language is difficult. Some people prefer more localized subtitles while others prefer subtitles that are more faithful to the original language and culture. In this case, they went the more localized route. I don't think that makes it unwatchable, but I can understand not liking the approach.

@RealNath There's a difference?

Also anyone who is defending this shit is an idiot. This is literally just garbage translation and is indefensible.

Dude calm down. It's not their fault you have a broken knowledge of japanese and don't want subs that capture the feeling of the orignal in a way that appeals to most Western audiences. If you can't watch it like this, just go learn japanese and watch without subtitles smh

I feel like most subs I watch these days do that with the names. Character says "family name"-san or nii-san and the subs replace it with their given name. It used to bug me but I just tell myself that at least I know what's actually being said.

maybe the official sub is actually a dubtitle - that is, the sub is taken straight from the English dub.
someone who watch the dub version can confirm or refute this.
You can buy lossless digital music from your favorite Japanese artists on https://ototoy.jp/.
The songs are all DRM-free and you can re-download your purchased albums as you wish.
Show your support to your favorite artist if you can!
ps. if you are looking for Japanese albums, you have to search it in Japanese (not romaji). Just copy and paste the name.

@DreamingBeats
Other Netflix anime use similar subs, sometimes containing embarrassing mistakes that their dubs do not make. Perhaps Netflix is allergic to the name "Saotome."

I recently watched the tennis episodes of Spy x Family and they had totally different names in the subs than in the story. It's really distracting to hear one name and read something completely different.

It's not a "small detail" it's very distracting.

I’ve been desensitized to the subs being different than what they’re actually referring to each other as, so it’s not as distracting to me. I understand that element, wouldn’t say that alone makes a show unwatchable even if that irritates you a bit more

Okay, it is a little annoying and occasionally it was throwing me off but not to the extent you've made it out to be. Honestly doesn't require a retranslation because of names being made more understandable for western audiences - it's literally on Netflix

There was a time where we had people who were really good at translating, they were doing it in their free time. Today, what we have is not translating. It's something that looks like it but it's not. If the VA says something in japanese, I want the text at the bottom to say the same thing in english. Even with the names. We don't have that anymore. And we have companies like Netflix, Sony and Disney to blame for hiring these "translators" and making the subs for the "Western Audience".

(And don't start with the dub, that shit shouldn't exist in the first place)

I think it is a yellow-class problem instead of a red-class. Frankly, I ignore names on the subtitles, relying on the names said by the characters.

I do not speak Japanese, but I hear names and understand them, huh?

@ChangeLeopardon Not everything needs to be Yakuza where they actually do that. Also in English we say people's first names as it is.
I haven't updated in years but now I have changed that. I'll be free soon.

It goes way deeper than names. Subtitles from neflix completely mischaracterizing characters, changing many lines without any valid reason. Sometimes these are small details (which, however, affect the perception of the characters significantly), sometimes whole sentences are simply mistranslated.

And yes, altering surname to name when characters are refereeing each other is actually a terrible idea. Especially for Japanese content.
Netflix subs are usually terrible, so it's not something new.

But one Twitter user is doing an experiment with AI translations.
He even did 2 extensive comparisons of the two translations.
AI wins in basically every case.

He also explained exactly how he does it, what prompt he used, and shows that AI can stick firmly to context with only Japanese subtitles as a source.
To be honest, I use these subtitles, because it is simply a much better option.

I would recommend reading these threads, because you can really see there that translations done by AI with proper promt and MTL google translate type are something completely and fundamentally different and unrelated.

Seriously though, its crazy how people lambast people who dont like this. Like, what an obvious incorrect subtitle does is plant doubt in your mind if there is anything else thats wrong about the translation. And you shouldnt be feeling like that when you are paying for entertainment lmfao...
