I just watched the movie today cause I'm trying to watch a bunch of horror stuff that I haven't seen for October, and the fantastical setting in it, was the closest fantasy/sci-fi location I have seen to the abyss.

Hell it even had a creature, that it's quirk was a 1 to 1 to one of the creatures in made in abyss. (I'll be it not as well thought out or cool, but still)

The feeling of this completely dangerous, and nightmarish, yet absolutely beautiful world. The feeling of having to survive against things that you barely understand. The setting itself almost having a mind of it's own. A 1 way journey to the source....

Hell even incredible music, and thematic writing. It did feel like abyss more than anything else I have seen.

Now it's not as good made in abyss, like at all. The characters and their story is pretty meh, and the world building itself isn't nearly as strong. but if you've been craving something that feels like exploring the abyss, this is pretty close. and it's a pretty decent movie.

The second half and climax of the movie actually have some REALLY strong moments.

There does seem to be some overlap between works of cosmic horror.
You'll REALLY see some similarities if you read Lovecraft's "Color Out of Space" or "Roadside Picnic" by Arkady Strugatsky and Boris Strugatsky.
Even some of Junji Ito's work shares commonality.
A location plagued with the unimaginable is a simple premise with only 2 options. Either we go THERE or IT comes HERE.

There is a good chance some of the staff for "Annihilation" watched/read Abyss. Same premise of losing a loved one and seachering to the center/bottom of a hellscape. The only big difference is the tone. Abyss being more fantastical and adventurous, while Annihilation is focused on horror.

@ChilyCheezeFryz I should get into more cosmic horror media, Earlier this year I also replayed bloodborne and finally looked into it's lore, and that one was also absolutely fascinating.

I'm not the biggest reader, even though I'm trying to get into it. I should definitely check out those books. Do you know any games or movies or shows that also do this type of thing well? I have had a hard time finding stuff like this.

I don't know many in terms of games, but:
World of Horror (Junji Ito inspired Visual Novel)
Dead Space (Resident Evil gameplay on a spaceship infected with an alien hivemind)
Saya no Uta (VN about a guy diagnosed with a disease that warps his senses to make everything look like rotting meat, discovers the one person he can see normally...HUGE SUBJECT MATTER WARNING)
S.T.A.L.K.E.R. (pseudo adaptation of Roadside Picnic, so very much like Annihilation...chernobyl became a restricted area of reality warping bs and monsters, while you the player have to explore and scrounge for scraps. rumor has it, the center of the zone has a crystal that can grant wishes)
Silent Hill counts too, technically.

For movies:
Color Out of Space (2019 really good Nicolas Cage acting)
The Void (2016)
Slither (2006)
The Mist (2007)
Event Horizon (1997)

These should be enough to get the rabbit-hole going.

For forum posts you really should at least add a discussion question. Also, comparing Made in Abyss to Annihillation is an angle i havent seen before but is definitely apt.

@Killjoy_Kora The idea Was to compare and contrast, and just talk about abyss and Annihilation.

I'm not sure how to phrase that as a question. What would you suggest?

There isn't even enough material in the manga for a new season right now, and the manga releases like one chapter per 6 months or so, so we won't see it for a long time.

@Porcupunk how difficulty is the language? I have just recently started to get into reading, so I'm not quite ready to dive into heavier texts.

When I watched Annihilation a couple years ago with my little sister, I made the same comparison! She hadn’t watched Made in Abyss, so she didn’t understand and I got no validation lol—I’m happy to see someone else make the same comparison.

sharing ideas and thoughts is a perfectly fine way to start a conversation or discussion. thanks for posting this! I totally agree with your observation.

Annihilation is based on the first book of the Area X series by Jeff Vandermeer, which I really recommend reading--the audiobook of it is fantastic and the movie (which i enjoy) doesnt do it any justice.

theres definitely similarities in that theres a kind of ecological ruin--usually apocalypse or ruin means things indicative of society breaking down, like buildings, roads, etc. but in both area x and made in abyss, the ecological 'ruin' is not desolation, but the opposite--its mutation and proliferation in a way extremely inhospitable to humans, rather than destruction that is inhospitable to humans. like you said, nightmarish and beautiful, hard to understand. both have these has central themes... the unknown.... theres not many pieces of media i can think of off the top of my head that do this theme well and i was happy to see someone point out the connection. its a fave sort of theme for me.
