Mitsuha sets up a date for Taki and Okudera because she knows that she is Taki's crush.

However she says, "I wanted to go on this date, but if you end up going you better enjoy it!".

If the goal was for Taki to end up with Okudera why would Mitsuha want to go on the date? I know we later see Mitsuha crying when she comes to realize she has feelings for Taki and is jealous that he is with Okudera, which explains why she goes to Tokyo, but it still doesn't explain why she wanted to be the one on the date. I dont know what I'm missing, or if there is some hidden meaning or ambiguous message, but an explanation would be grateful.

Literally! And Mitsuha grew pretty close with Okudera during her time in Taki’s body, so I always interpreted that line as her wishing to spend a full day in Tokyo with a new friend.

@kraphtuos It does, and I had this thought as well. I interpreted it as she caught feelings for him during their time switching places, so she likely set the date up for him against her subconscious feelings and the next day when she was at the mirror, she began to cry realizing her feelings for him and that she could lose him and this explains why she goes to Tokyo and has doubts about how he would feel seeing her.

Though it is nice to see what others interpret.

It’s been a while since I’ve watched it, but just guessing from all the times I’ve seen that maybe she’s saying she wanted to go because she was the one who put in the effort to set the whole thing up. Making it so Taki is the one that gets to enjoy it even though the whole thing, including their possible relationship, was her doing.

Another explanation could be that she doesn’t want Taki to go because she doesn’t realize it yet but she does have feelings for him and for him to go on the date means that he’s leaving her behind in a sense or moving further away from her. And then with her crying in the mirror she comes to that realization, which gives the viewer meaning to what she said. Looking back on it now I think the latter is more likely but I’d have to watch again to be sure.

@NickGrim The latter makes more sense. She likely said this subconsciously, I don't see how else it would make sense.

@BettrThanFlapjax Agreed. Not everything has to be spelled out. It’s what gives the characters complexity and makes them more compelling

Going out on dates is fun.
So, Mitsuha would like to experience that time with Okudera.
Much more since she was the one who worked to get that date.

I consider that Mitsuha arranged that date thinking she was helping him get a beautiful girlfriend.
You know, being a matchmaker, setting up couples and arranging marriages is quite fun.

From what I see, she got so much into the mood of arranging the date for "a friend" that she did not notice her feelings until the next morning.
Noticing her real feelings, she runs out to stop him from going out.

I think that she just wanted to go on the date because she was having so much fun with her. And also maybe to seal the deal for Taki.

@Wofivanhoe That makes sense, but the switch is random, which explains why she says in the notes "but if you end up going" and its implied she set this date up specifically for Taki as himself, but like you said, she probably wanted to go too because she has had fun with Okudera before.

@Puntosmx I can see that. I think the moment where she says "He's so lucky" is where she is jealous of what Taki has right now which is a date with a woman he has a crush on and this is when Mitsuha realizes this is what she wants as well, but with Taki and that's why she cries. She sounded so depressed when talking about how Taki was with Okudera.

I think Mitsuha also wanted to "date" Okudera since Taki - Okudera relationship was built by her, so she sure have a lot of fun moment with Okudera. She didn't mean "date" literally, she just wanted to hang out with Okudera. However, since her initial goal was to get Taki and Okudera to be closer, she told Taki to make the best out of the date and enjoy it

Sometimes you say stuff that's not reflective of how you feel with the aim of playing the social situation itself. "I didn't set this date up for you out of the kindness of my heart, I did it because I wanted to go. If you go, you're obligated to enjoy it for me" dismisses any sense of indebtedness that comes from receiving a favor, and encourages Taki to focus on having a good time without fretting over the context.

This sort of almost gamelike thinking ahead and steering of the social situation is common in real life too (e.g. "Oh I just happened to be in the area" or "No no, I'm so stuffed, please go ahead") but especially so in Japanese culture, which puts a significant emphasis on consideration for the feelings left unsaid by those around you. If you look for it in Japanese media, you'll find it quickly.

Basically what others are saying; Mitsu gets along with her and is simultaneously poking fun at Taki.

Just think of it as a girls night out as the "date" in this instance. Mitsu would not have helped Taki out rizzing her up if she didnt like the colleague to begin with, given Mitsu's strong personality.

Whoever ended up going on the date, Mitsu just wanted all parties involved to have fun.

Like she is jealous and doesn't want him to go, so she in his body can make it so that "he" doesn't go on the date. So it's more like "I don't want you to go" than "I want to go" at least I think that's what it means... watched many years ago so don't remember well...

@Daddi4900 You were able to articulate better than I ever could, this is makes it easier to understand. It makes even more sense with this being a thing in Japanese culture too.

I think it’s because mitsuha knows how to act around okudera in a way that will make her fall for taki and wants to help him out. Because when taki does go on the date, hes extremely nervous and doesnt really treat her as well as mitsuha does. And because mitsuha is a girl, she probably knows what to do when on a date with a girl.

This is just what I think, but I think you're really overthinking it. The way I've always read it is Mitsuha really liked hanging out with Okudera, so a date with her would probably just be a fun time out in Tokyo. As a country girl, she would definitely look forward to that.

It could also be the case that Mitsuha wanted to go on a date with Taki rather than Okudera. Subconsciously hoping to find out who Taki was by going on a date, even though it was not possible. (Just an assumption)

I viewed it as a way Mitsuha demonstrated both how she got fond of her and how she is jealous of Taki going out with her.

I think it’s both because Mitsuha got quite close to Okudera, so going on a date with her would be fun, but also I generally believe that she thought that if Taki was the one going on the date, him and Okudera would end up together. So it’s like “I wish I was the one to go that way you two wouldn’t fall in love” kind of thing. The funny thing is, Okudera was intrigued by Mitsuha’s version of Taki, so I don’t think they would’ve ended up together.
