The first movie would be better understood if watched in chronological order, but it basically tells the story of a woman who kept repeating her own death as a projection. A way of hers to feel some life and adrenaline, since she was in a bed for years.

The basic thing you need to understand about the first movie is that you are not supposed to understand it... yet XD It's a weird choice but KnK basically starts you off around the middle of the story, at a part which basically has no plot relevance. The main takeaway from this movie is that you know who the main characters are and their rough character dynamic.

If you still want a synopsis I'll give you the 10 second version. This movie is presenting the philosophical dillema of which is better, to "fly" or to "float". Flying can be seen as following your dreams to their conclusion, being free, whereas floating can be seen as taking the safe way, being mediocre. In the end the ghost girl wanted to "fly" but she could only "float". Mikiya has a slightly different interpration to "flying good, floating bad". Mikiya says, maybe there is some value in floating as well (This is referenced indirectly again in the final movie). Believe it or not that is roughly all there is to it. If you are confused about what happened in the movie in practical terms and not in terms of meaning, basically the girl at the hospital wants to be free, she had previously seen Mikiya at the hospital (more on that in the 4th movie) and she felt that he could give her that freedom, so she used her ability on him to try to "claim" him, but shiki doesn't like that cause she has dibs on our home boy so she went to put a stop to it.

The second movie is the actual starting point for the series.

@Yaaceen No problem :)

I am not entirely sure what you mean by "how was Mikiya". He was put into a deep sleep, which presumably would have escalated in some way if Shiki didn't intervene. It is possible that Mikiya's soul was being held by the girl somehow, to me it is not clear exactly if the girl wanted to kill Mikiya to make him a ghost like the other girls or if he was special. This is a very small spoiler for the last movie but later it is revealed that Mikiya is the kind of person that "floats", so perhaps that is the real reason why Mikiya wasn't coerced to jumping off a building, he never wished to fly in the first place.

The other ghosts are pretty clear, the girl had the ability to call out to them and coerce them to jump off a building in an attempt to "fly". After they died they became "ghosts", presumably controlled by the girl. The precise nature of the ability is left unclear. It appears to be some kind of mind control ability judging from when she was partially able to use it also on Shiki. As for the ghosts, I remember that Touko says that the girl was a person with "1 soul born with 2 bodies", the girls own ghost is this other body. The ghosts of the other girls seem to be some kind of extension of this ability of having control over 2 bodies.

The KnK series doesn't follow chronological order so the first movie will be very confusing for full comprehension because it technically isn't the beginning of the story. I suggest you follow this order: 2 - 4 - 3 - 1 - 5 - 6 - 7 - 8

Nah, there is no depth or philosophy there, just a poor little things dying because they have no purpose for living. For Shiki, however, that icecream was a turning point back to existence.
Very simple and poorly written story, but
exceptional art. This applies to the whole series though.
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
