Ppl definitely recognize him out of the anime circle but most of them don't know the character's name or the show he's from. It's just because Gojo was literally everywhere on social media. It's just like you said, kind of like Goku and Naruto but on a way way smaller scale.

Personally I don’t think he’s really known by non-anime fans yet. It takes a lot to break out into the mainstream and for most people that’s really only characters like Goku, Naruto, and to a lesser extent Luffy.

I guess it depends on how you define mainstream/average person but to me it’s when the majority of average people can recognize it. I think a lot of older people would have no idea who Gojo is, but younger people might have at least seen him yeah.

Are you the most straightforward man or what? Hachiman Hikigaya is more interesting than Goujo. He is just a Overpowered side character man, charecter wise there are Light, Zoro, Killua, Gintoki, Hachiman, Eren ... and many others those have much deeper and iconic character build in story. Goujo has power and design and mappa animation nothing else.

I'd rather choose Eren Yeager. Gojo is extremely popular too but to be fair he gained a lot of popularity last year (amount of new fangirls), so he's the character of the 2023 for sure

yep his popularity increased like crazy in recent years . he's like Goku and Naruto but smaller scale .
Fan girls & k-pop stans played a major part in popularity of that character .
I personally don't like Gojo and most Gojo fans kinda cringe .
Tanjiro isn't that popular character Demon slayer is popular .

I knew about Gojo even before watching any anime or even having any interest in that matter (started somewhere in the middle of 2021), so I'd say he is somehow popular. I knew about Attack on Titan and Demon Slayer, but nothing about Eren or Tanjiro. But maybe that's just my case.

@Nats482 Of course but his character peaked in the 2020s and that's when he became the most popular/phenomenon he is. Most people (anime fans) overlooked Eren as a character before the 2020s but after only a few episodes into season 4, he was already regarded by many as not only one of the best characters in AOT, but all of anime. So that's why I'd list him as one of the most iconic characters of the 2020s.

@Isekai-Enjoyer yeah that’s my belief as well. I think a lot of people have heard of One Piece now both because of the successful live action, and the series length and success itself. but I don’t think they know luffy the character specifically

Denji and Makima from Chainsawman are around as popular as Gojo

Oshi no Ko also got big, but it's hard to tell if it's specifically popular in the way that people know the characters, specifically Ai Hoshino. I think she's more popular visually, though.

Hitori Goto, Bocchi, from Bocchi the Rock might also be in this realm of popularity since she overlaps into so many other memes but I wouldn't be surprised if tons of non-anime watchers didn't know her name.

Boruto might be the biggest recognizable newcomer though, just from legacy alone.

I thought he was the main character before I started watching it, from T-shirts at Hot Topic. I didn't know his name though. I'd wager the blindfold and hair are the biggest standout features that continue to that though. He's definitely got main character energy.

I also would submit Zerotwo as a challenger.
