ive just started the 2006 show, but i noticed there are a bunch of sequels, yet theyre not directly labeled as a new season. i know gou and sotsu are the newest ones, but are they linked to the original story? if i finish rei, do i need to watch anything past that? since nothing after that is labeled as like "season 4" or anything. and also the art style looks entirely different now ...

cant find anything specific about the watch order online so i figured id ask here..the rating is pretty low lol

You could watch them all in order of release or chronologically and still get the same experience unless you read the visual novel. Because they’re broken down into question arks and answer arks. Gou and Sotsu are continuing the cycle where the 2006 left off. The reason the animation is different is because the 2006 is Studio DEEN and the new one is Passione.

IMO Gou and Sotsu was fun and good watch. 👍 But that Dragon Ball fight at the end was just so out of place.

I'm not expecting realism in a story about time travel and shit

Of course, but that was still out of place.

The correct watch order is to not read the VNs and not watch the animes. Hope I've helped.

Just go with release order:

Higurashi
Nekogoroshi-hen
Kai
Rei

Then watch Kira and Outbreak if you're interested, they're just fan service and alternate stories respectively

And then you just forget Gou and Sotsu exist, trust me

release order for everything. Also, don't let other people tell you gou and sotsu are bad without trying it yourself. You'll know soon enough whether it is for you or not, and it's not like you'll hate life and everything about the series if you didn't like it.

- Higurashi - When They Cry (2006)
- Higurashi no Naku Koro ni: Nekogoroshi-hen OVA(2007)
- Higurashi - When They Cry: Kai (2007)
- Higurashi - When They Cry: Rei (2009)
- Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Kira OVA (2011)
- Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Kaku: Outbreak Movie (2013)
- Higurashi: When They Cry – Gou (2020)
- Higurashi: When They Cry – Sotsu (2021)

The OVA’s and Movie are optional, but I highly recommend not skipping them. In my opinion they are really good and make Higurashi a bit more “enjoyable”.

1st season then kai then rei then gou then sotsu. If you like the deen adaption I’d recommend the umineko manga(very long) but its one of the best VNs as a manga and then watch gou and sotsu after. Of course you dont have to at all and isn’t necessary but it better but if dont it should dimish the experience.

Well said. But i can’t tell if some people are seriously defending gou and sotsu to be this perfect conclusion to the story. Especially after the ending. I would highly advise people to stop at rei
Since that’s a perfect place for the story to end.
Compare to sotsu’s ending and it’s entire point feels completely pointless and has no meaning, as well as it being BS.

Main Series:
Higurashi no Naku Koro ni (Main Series Part 1/3)
Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Special: Nekogoroshi-hen (Season 1 OVA. Not cannon. I say skip.)
Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Kai (Main Series Part 2/3)
Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Kai Specials (2nd season specials that edit and redub scenes for comedic effect, but I don't recommend watching them at all because IMO they're painfully unfunny)
Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Rei (Main Series Part 3/3)
Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Kira (Specials meant to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the series. Not cannon. Watch if you liked episodes 1 and 5 of Rei. I really liked these, though)
Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Kaku: Outbreak (OVA mini-movie. Not cannon. I say skip.)

Sequel Series:
Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Gou (Sequel Series Part 1/2)
Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Sotsu (Sequel Series Part 2/2)

Sequel series is largely seen as undesirable. I say skip it unless you are really invested in the series. The manga counterpart is still publishing and is supposed to have a less disappointing ending. It's better so far but not by much IMO)

My recommendation is just to watch these three:
Higurashi no Naku Koro ni
Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Kai
Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Rei
And only consider the sequel series if you really, really want more.

You also have to be familiar with Umineko no Naku Koro Ni to fully understand what was going on in Gou Sotsu.

Main entries:

Higurashi no Naku Koro ni
Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Kai
Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Rei

Secondary entries (if you enjoyed the characters):

Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Special: Nekogoroshi-hen
Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Kira
Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Kaku: Outbreak

Sequels (watch at your own discretion):

Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Sotsu - Skip to Episodes 14-15 to get the bare minimum of what's important
