I watched movie some days ago and it is stuck in my mind probably the best standalone anime movie out there

But i didn't watched it for many years because it was recommended to me as a romance which i think is misguiding, sure romance is clearly visible but it is not the main theme of story but when i asked one of my friends he said it is clearly a romance so i want to know what most people think of it

Yes, because Shouko's crush on Shouya is important part of the movie.

I feel like there is romance in their but it’s not the movies primary focus. I think it would be more accurate to call it a coming of age movie.

Don’t think so, if you watch the beggining of it it may seem like it is, but as the story progresses you see that the main focus of the story is basically the main character trying to get his life together.

Romance only happens AFTER the confession. They're friends throughout the whole movie so at most I'd say it has a "romantic subtext".

Logically, the "romance" is different for different people. despite The movie was gently romantic type movie not hard-core i guess (7 times watched based opinion)

she tried to confess to him
i think when he was trying to save her
he was about to confess to her
j think roamance is an importatant element
but i also think the main focus is redemption
i think it is a romantic story about redemption

No, it's primarily a drama. It has a romance subplot, but it's not the genre of the movie.

Romantic subtext to be specific, but it would be misleading to say that it's not a romance.

Nope because romance wasn't the primary focus of this movie imo. It's not like Your Name. Romance existed more like a subplot here. You can even check the tags and you'll see what I mean.

It has romantic elements but that doesn't make it a romance time core of the movie is the characters issues the core drama is the main thing

It would have been the best stand alone anime movie to ever exist if "Kimi no suizo wo tabetai" didn't exist imo

About your question, it is a romantic subtext movie where the romance or feelings of a character actually had some impact on the plot but the romance isn't the main focus of the story shown in the movie

Its mostly about deppresion and self acceptance but the romance plays a huge part in all of that and makes the characters better

I think if they adapted more of the manga or made it into a series then it would be more romance cuz the romance doesnt get validated in the movie

I consider shows and movies like this to be in their own category that I named “bait romance” which is when a show lays the ground work for a romance but doesn’t follow through with the romance

I don’t think I would personally classify it as a romance anime due to romance not being the main themes from what I remember.

Not the anime himself, is not a romance, there is romance but the story goes much much deeper than just that so i think something more psychological?

There is a reason why there are different categories for romance versus romantic subtext. Here is the definition of romantic subtext from MAL with the distinction it has with romance itself:

"Romantic Subtext is a narrative which can at first appear to be Romance. These plots feature one or more main couples which seem to have romantic interest in each other, and whose relationship(s) will be central to the main story. However, while the story will set the couple up for heartwarming or embarrassing moments, these encounters will not lead to any significant romantic development, and the characters will not strive to deepen the relationship beyond a certain boundary.

Some early indicators of Romantic Subtext include a missing emotional throughline (lack of personal reflection which allows the characters to understand their feelings and share these with the audience) and a lack of any conflict which will deepen or drive the relationship apart. Almost always, Romantic Subtext is a theme under the Comedy genre and these stories have plots designed to uplift the audience with positive emotion or amusement.

Not to be confused with Romantic Sideplot, where a Romance narrative is side story to another main genre plot (e.g. Action or Adventure). Romance and Romantic Subtext are mutually exclusive by definition. Harem and Reverse Harem may fall into a similar pattern of absent romantic development, but will not be double-tagged."

In the case of the movie, it focuses more on the redemption story of Shouya. While Shouya and Shouko are mutually attracted to each other, their relationship doesn't progress beyond friendship, so it is tagged as romantic subtext. Hopefully that helps to clarify the difference for people.
