Of course they wouldn't kill off Lavi as she is the main character. Still, it's scary how she got injuried and also has a target on her back now.

Also interesting to see some more of Lavi's past especially in regards with her connection to her grandfather.

This episode clearly solidified Lavi as a character. She found a answer of what being a hero means. I like how Talion refers Rean status as hero a curse(Next episodes for sure will show how powerful that curse is), Production team really knows to give little references like this. A nice little break, The calm before the storm. Next episodes will be what was shown in Cold steel 3 flashbacks and dialogues about the Northern war

The miracle of this episode was Lavi not getting an infection after falling in sewage.

Derek "I'm a healer, but"

Is kinda sad that Lavi didn't get a bright blue highlight at least.

Its good that Lavi ended up being found and treated. By her mother no less. Looks like Talion also wanted to know which path was the best one. While its rare its nice to see combat troops make small sacrifices to help the medics out. In the present it's nice to see the stuck up brats of Rogan's dogs get taught a little lesson from those who actively served on the field. Just as Rean, Lloyd and Estelle were one was not born as hero but become one thanks to the support of their friends, comrades and other halves. Lavi needs to accept this and stop acting by herself. Lavi's gramps though really prepared well though. Overall a fun ep that did well to allow Lavi to return to her roots and find her central motivation while also allowing her to make amends to her family as well. Given the pacing im curious whether this series has a sequel planned.

As I expected, a timeskip to get Lavi healed up.

Not much to really talk about other than that this episode felt like it came out of nowhere. I didn't get the idea that Lavi treasured her village or cared that much for the people in it. It felt more like she wanted to do her best for North Ambria as a whole. So this episode felt like they forgot to give her motivation and just came up with "She likes her village and the people in it". It would've been more impactful if we saw the villagers help her in various ways across the entire season, and then she realizes that she's fighting for them, rather than rushing everything in 1 episode.

Also, I knew they'd contrive a reason for her to stay alive, but it's still worth mentioning how lucky it is that she wasn't found by the Jaegers. I kinda wish they showed Lavi flowing down one path in the sewers before the jaegers see her, and have Talion tell them that she went down another direction to throw them off. Making it more believable rather than just sheer luck.

Finally, a half-decent episode. Lavi had a character moment. Pretty cool.

Showing how Lavi loves her village upfront kinda shortens her character arc though.
Especially since Lavi joined the Jaegers since she finds no purpose in staying in her boonies of a village and how she did not realize why her grandfather stayed there and what purpose would a grandchild of a hero would have purpose there so being with the Jaegers can at least put her skills to use instead.

Her realizing that love for her village have more impact later in the story and how it correlated to her finding the meaning hero works better in the way the anime did.
Though a briefer dialogue on how she ran away from home at the start would be plus. Since the images of her seemingly running away from the farm still is so vague that it is open to misinterpretation

I'm not saying she should realize her love for her village upfront and early in the story, but we should have something to connect her to them. like someone from her village helping her or her thinking about some memories of her time in the village, and have that contrast to her time in the jaegers to tell her how she's always relied on people and how they are what she cares about.

We can see how they screwed that up when her mother tells her that she's the one who's always been protected. She starts having flashbacks to the jaegers and the only thing from her village that flashes to her mind is the guy finding her collapsed. Had they set up something for her to remember, we'd have seen it then with all the other scenes. But everything about Lavi's village came about in this episode, so it felt rushed.

Huh, she actually got shot.  That's a little surprising.  I thought it was gonna be "I pretended to shoot you.  Now you're legally dead so get out of here." scenarios.

And finally on episode 11 out of 12 we finally get the titular Northern War.  What a mess of a show

They probably would have added something like that if they had more episodes to play with.
This is probably something they can show in the gacha game but good luck to us if the gacha game would even get a western release

Oh dude I dread whatever they’re planning with that. I don’t mind gacha games if they put a lot of effort into them. But I can’t see this going in a way other than the “Tales of” gacha games. Terrible, forgettable, having nothing of value narratively, and dead within a couple years.

nah Kiseki already has a gacha game(Akatsuki no kiseki) that was released on 2016. The Epilogue of that was released last year.

The akatsuki no kiseki lasted for years and can be considered a good gacha unlike the tales gacha which usually crashes and burns, so at least we have that as a context to expecting Northern War gacha can be good.
The problem is Akatsuki needed up being Japan only and no global version was ever made. So even if Northern War is actually good it might follow the trails gacha route and stay in Japan and Taiwan only
