According to mal it has just 94k members and among them only 34k has completed it. So it's safe to assume that it's hugely underrated. Not even most of the Monogatari fans are aware of this show from the same author.

Monthly OVA release successfully killed the hype.
I agree it is underappreciated, tho.
It was literally Monogatari series. The vibes are identical, so any fan should watch it as well.

as a shaft studio fan, it's sad that this Nisio Isin anime is very underrated

I feel ya, also kinda sad that the chances of the next volume, which I think is the best in the series, being adapted is nearly impossible.

i've seen many people pissed off about the fact that looks like monogatari, which is ironic, also bcs the series was released in 2017, so it's quite old compared with the newer series

because its part of a quite complicated light novel series, and it isn't isekai.

its actually already way more popular than it should be internationally for some reason, even before it got an anime, its just that the anime did not increase its popularity.

take something like baccano! for example, almost everyone who has watched it loved it, yet its still extremely obscure, i didn't even realize how obscure this was until I realized that majority of the people some how barely even know about stuff like hellsing, black lagoon, samurai champloo, tri gun, darker than black etc and other 2000-2012 action classics that I originally considered popular due to how much they are talked about online,

however going to an anime convention, and having had went to anime clubs in high school(and i dipped out almost instantly after seeing what they were into or was doing)
almost no one knew any of these series,
they literally only knew the big 3 and other shounen titles, like bleach naruto one piece, dragonball etc.
and the girls would know stuff like sailor moon etc, but literally nothing more, im surprised about how obscure even basic anime as a medium, even after so many years nad people thinking anime was becoming mainstream,

what they mean is, the top 10 most popular anime series, on shounen jump or some isekai, gets popular.

everything else is still unpopular as ever.

most people don't even realize medaka box was a long running manga also by nisin,
hell I didn't even know that at first ether, it actually blew my mind, the same person who wrote the monogatari series also wrote medaka box, and katanagatari which was COMPLETELY different in style and tone,
and man i strongly disliked monogatari when I first had a glimpse of it, so i kind dismissed the author,
little did I know that monogatari was only his most popular work.

It's genuinely really good, I don't understand why people didn't like it. Sure the first episode was boring but clearly not the rest as far as I am concerned.

Unlike Monogatari and Katanagatari and Zaregoto, Medaka Box has never been published in English. I'm surprised.

yeah it's pretty mind blowing to think he's done all those. But I think you can see a lot of the same phenomena with niche interests in general. For example the vast majority of people who watched steins gate are not aware that it is an adaptation of one entry in a larger visual novel franchise (science adventure), as the anime adaptations for the other entries are quite frankly terrible (apart from arguably occultic nine and robotics notes). It's so bizarre to me to think that such great pieces of art are not known by more people. I feel like they're missing out on some of the best stuff ever. If anime truly were to become mainstream I hope it would help perpetuate the memory of the truly great shows.

YEAH its insane, I didn't even know it was a thing ether, like occult 9 is apparently one of the sequels or something, and a few others.  but I actually really like that. Instead of having really obnoxious cross overs or large worlds marvel style, I really like the greater world thing, except not everything is explained to be connected, and protagonists rarely make cameos in other series and when they do its out of the blue and expected.

Like for example in tv tropes there is a thing called stealth sequel, and I really like something like that.

the best example in western movies would be split (2017) which is actually secretly a sequel to the previous work and its actually about super heros at the end. but the whole movie was psychological horror, the whole relation to the rest of the story was kept secret until the end, which i like.
