In this afterword, aside from describing his inspirations of what brought his ideas to the four chapters of this first volume,
he mentions how this is the first time he had full liberty of unlimited pages for being serialized on the Line Manga app, and that he's perhaps tired, and out of good ideas after drawing manga for 35 years since 1987 debuting with Tomie.

I've practically read all of his One-Shots and Manga except for No Longer Human in a span of a few months.
I really enjoyed reading his stories. None are perfect to my judgement,
but most of them are fascinating in how he uses his wide range of creative ideas for horror.
I also appreciate his characters who are well implemented with a realistic tone at times even though many critisize his characters for lacking complexity.
His trope of endings left mysterious with little to no rational or insightful meaning can be frustrating, but there is a charm to the bad ending route, especially when it's fitting to the tragedy of the story.

There are many stories and series that he's created that I love and are favorites.
It's sad to think that he'll eventually or sooner than later retire from being a Mangaka.
Although, after this, he drew Lighthouse, albeit just a promotion to the movie, and worked on the upcoming new anime of his collection.

Looking at dates, I think it does seem that he's drawn less over the last 5 years, but regardless he's created a lot of stories over the 35 years of drawing, which I think is great, or possibly extraordinary from what is common of Mangaka, but I'm not sure.

I don't think this will be his last manga- at least, I hope not, but if so, I appreciate his talent. And if he does continue... I'm always eager to read more.

I totally agree with you!

As a fan that is trying to complete his collection, his words shocked me: "Still, perhaps I'm tired after drawing manga for years on end. I'm out of good ideas."
But it's reasonable after all these years. I just hope he doesn't release new stories just for the sake of it.
In general, I really liked the stories in The Luminal Zone, especially Madonna. What was your favorite?

Update: Junji Ito Launches New Short Manga Series in February
(Source: https://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2022-12-13/junji-ito-launches-new-short-manga-series-in-february/.192900)

Awesome that Junji Itou will continue drawing manga, and every two months at that, for however long.
Seems that The Liminal Zone will remain on-hold, unless he eventually merges the two with this new series.

@Otaku_do_Bagaco
The first chapter is easily my favorite.
Imagining the sobbing of several women as a horror is freaky but entertaining to envision.
