(note i havent watched the first episode)

Is this just an xxxHolic lookalike? I wouldn't be opposed to that, since I loved (and still do love) Holic as a kid, and if this is a good show with a similar premise, especially if it's similarly a weekly solving a person's issue format like Holic was, I might have to give it a watch.

So far it does give xxxHOLiC feeling. The premise and the vibe are very similar, as well as the format so far. A mysterious woman (technically a girl in this case) solving cases and doing jobs related to supernatural stuff for a price. Of course setting and characters are different.

I think magic wish granting shop isn't really exclusive to xxxHOLiC, but yeah it gives a lot of vibes. Shouxue even has a gap between her proper personality and her real one like Yuko does

This is absolutely nothing like Holic. It is beautiful but its historic, unlike Holic. There is a girl can help with things involving supernatural/magical but she’s employed by the emperor. She is not granting wishes. The art is also very different but still beautiful. It is good so far, I would give it a try if I were you.

It’s a similar story set up of going after little supernatural mysteries, but it feels set apart as it’s set within a Chinese temple, so the first episode features the royal family and politics a lot, and since she is a 16-year-old I would also compare it to Hell Girl. Doesn’t have the humour of holic, and it also has beautiful art though I wouldn’t describe its style as a cheap knock-off if holics

Can you enlighten me on what did Xxxholic invent?

a creepy episodic format with a mentor who is well versed in the mystical arts (maybe they grant wishes, maybe they're a witch, but they are a mystical sensei) who teaches a main character or guides a main character through each episodic mystery. Often has an atmosphere where the mentor is completely aware of every single thing happening while the audience (and the MC) are confused and left in the dark by this "magic" until it's (probably) explained at the end of the episode or series.

(please note I fucking love xxxholic, and if this was a show of the same genre, it would make me MORE rather than less interested. I think holic is super unique and I'd love to see more magic shop or episodic mystery solving shows with an overarching plot in the background. for me, the monkey paw episode was burned into my memory when I saw it out of context one time on Funimation. that was probably my first introduction into anime ever, which I would years later get into, but that monkey paw episode left a huge impact on me and in super glad I eventually found the series it came from and got to watch it. sorry, rant over, I just really like holic, I have ever since I was a kid.)

Don't know xxxHolic. (First time I heard of it.) The anime reminded me a bit of Saiunkoku Monogatari though - cause of the fantasy setting that is like medieval china + fantasy stuff mixed in. And a female main char ... with more than one other male. (And the main male it seems ... is the emperor.)

I do get some xxxholic vibes from this, especially the second episode. I don't think it's as good as xxxholic (mostly because pacing is a bit too fast), it's still worth watching. I think it scratches that certain itch.

It reminds me more of The Apothecary Diaries than xxxHolic but now that you mentioned it, the "get a wish for a price" thing does give that vibe.
That said, I like them both and I am enjoying this show too.

Funny thing how this thread appeared as I’m watching xxxHolic. It is similar, but Raven of the Inner Palace has its own identity, in fact I like this more than Holic.

Yes, me too. I like Saiunkoku so much!

Second ED is my favorite! I cry every time I see it. But, despite all, it shows us that you have to believe in the best! It is so life-asserting video clip!

Pretty sad that Shurei died during childbirth. She was so young, only 30 years old. It was shown in the last light novel volume.

This show has nothing similar with xxxHolic. Thankfully.

Abslolutely not. It is very similar to Fairies Albums, also series which help spirits release their sufferings and calmly leave the earth realm.

It also has the main heroine which helps different people to talk with spirits and relieve them of suffering, anxieties and fears connecting them to the people they love which they have.

I recommend to watch all 3 seasons of it to anyone who likes the spirits theme!

ED song is so amazing! I can listen to it forever!

The story is severely lacking though. It also lacks the "xxxHolic" atmosphere.
