I didn't understand anything either. Maybe reading the manga would make thinks more clear...but the only available scans of the manga are the flipped versions and I don't have the money to buy the new box set so I never checked that either.

From what I remember, Akira was the first child with super power and he was heavily experimented on and most likely he was the one who caused the explosion at the beginning of the movie.
Later it is revealed that Akira is no longer alive and only his organs have been preserved to study it further.

You could try to see if your local library has the manga.

In the manga the plot is greatly expanded as at the time of the movie only 4/6 volumes where out. Also because of limited run time they had to make many cuts like making Akira just parts of a body but in the manga he is actual character.

I’ve read the manga and watched the movie after reading and actually didn’t understand how anyone could understand the movie at all.
They cut so many main characters and changed the basis of the story.
Pretty much Akira in the manga was one of the children that was experimented on but exceeded his peers and became more than a child. In the manga he is seen as this all knowing being in child form with powers so much greater.
When Akira awakened he destroyed the whole city to what is known as the neo-tokyo that is seen in the movie.
In the manga Akira was locked underground and kept in very cold freezing temperatures so that he could not move or “awaken” again.
Although in the movie he isn’t even really mentioned till the end and he isn’t even alive just random dna samples which is weird.
Pretty much in the manga Tetsuo is experimented on and becomes similar to Akira and if not stronger, in the end the only one who could destroy someone like Tetsuo was Akira himself.
Akira is a key character in the manga, anyway Akira is still has his own conscience and has friends from the testing days and in the end they all die together to neutralise Tetsuo with Akira “awakening” again with a big explosion.

pretty much Akira is a main character but the movie doesn’t really mention it but he is the previous Tetsuo, there’s a lot of stuff that the movie doesn’t cover you should read the manga if you wanna see the beauty of Akira (the franchise)

Because it’s old and deemed a “Classic” for some reason. The story telling in the movie is horrible even for it’s time, the only thing that stood out and still stands out is the animation and sound quality.

If I remember correctly, the movie was produced and released before the ending of the manga. Katsuhiro made a lot of changes to the story’s ending after the movie but I can’t exactly remember any particular reason why.

It’s good animation for its time, but it’s one of the very few anime I rated a 3, because it makes no sense. It’s a shame people recommend it to anime newbies, because it’s the sort of thing that will turn people off from the world of anime imo

Ok so. The movie was made before the manga was even finished so it basically has the first half of vol1 and the second half of the last volume. You’re not gonna understand the story unless you read the manga or wait for the remake that’s gonna come at some point

Because it’s literally the reason you have anime today. Akira is what truly made anime popular back then with its insane animation that holds up great even today. It’s not really about the story

A movie about two troubled orphan boys in a motorcycle gang. One of those boys (Tetsuo) believes the other members in the bike gang see him as useless and weak. Therefore intentionally puts himself in trouble and even harms way in order to try and prove otherwise. This causes him to discover that he has super human abilities which makes him feel that he is now superior in every way. However, he isn't the only one to discover his unique abilities... the government then kidnaps him due to the potential danger he could cause.

After doing some digging Tetsuo comes to find out that he is in fact not the strongest being to live on earth; it is actually Akira... only Akira has been dead for years and his organs are in possession of the government. Tetsuo on the other hand still sees Akira as a rival and wants to bring him back only to destroy him again but by his own hands instead of the government. Meanwhile Tetsuo's best friend and fellow orphan Kaneda tries to find a way to rescue Tetsuo and talk some sense into him which unfortunately only causes Tetsuo to become more angry and more determined. In the end Tetsuo's physical self(along with Akira) is completely obliterated. The only remainder is his consciousness.

After that, in my opinion is up to you to decide what happens (cliffhanger) . For me I think he's in the same position as Akira where he's so powerful that his mind cannot be destroyed only his body is gone.

The movie didn't fully adapt the manga. It's basically the beginning of the first volume and the ending of the last volume. So if you don't understand, it's because a huge part of the manga, that would explain stuff, is missing.

I don’t expect a lot of people to understand this movie/manga since it seems a lot of newer anime watchers are used to being spoonfed information right off the bat or the information is easily found out through simplistic story telling. Personally, while the manga is absolutely much better, this movie is a phenomenal piece of animation and a very good representation of social issues that arise in common society. That is… sans the psychic children.

I got to the same interpretation. In the end, Akira/Tetsudo became a part of the universe. Instead of existing in his physical body, he became a part of the universe. I think this movie is highly inspired by 2001: A space of Odessey movie by Stanley Kubrick. At least, the movie game the same vibes.

That response typically comes from people who want a plain and simple plot with a lot of action. If you truly care and want to understand your movie, do your research or just simply read the manga for a further explanation. I bet there are reviews out there that explain the plot/movie in-depth (and in that way you don't need to read the manga). But I can respect people's opinions if they have good arguments to back it up, but to it is an overrated trash movie without doing any further investigation is an ignorant statement!

I am glad there is someone who likes the movie. I agree with your opinion (though I haven't read the manga yet). I felt the story building of the movie is similar to 2001: A space of Odessey where everything is not fed to you. You have to understand the movie by yourself and interpret the movie how you wish. Here, at least, there is a manga for further canon explanation, but with 2001 and Perfect Blue (another anime similar to this one) you have to interpret the ending yourself and come to a logical conclusion. Seems like the majority of users here on this thread like to be fed all the answers, which in my opinion, can be very boring sometimes.

@harikoa Thanks for the explanation. I think they should have called this movie as "Tetsuo" instead of "Akira", LOL.
