It is assumed that this was a personal decision of the translator, since the author and publisher deny any involvement in this. Anyway, this caused a scandal, as there were quite a few gay guys among the fans of the manga, who considered such changes as erasing the homosexual representation and the sexist idea that a cis man cannot be androgynous.

Hate it when western translators do this kind of thing, it’s ‘boys love’.

They completely ruined the manga and the authors intent with this "localization". It's disappointing and a shame that the translator was so untalented that they couldn't write something of their own and felt they had to make fan fiction out of and in place of someone else's work.

They changed it a while back ago, just to let you know.

Honestly I’m glad I read this article.
Initially I had thought the character was a trans woman but if the author specifically has said they are a boy who cross dresses then ig the choice to change their character to a trans woman becomes all the more confusing.

The translator simply decided to turn it into a "deserved" trans representation without any agreement with the localizers or the author herself.

I love trans rep in manga but this was not the place for it, very disrespectful to the author.
But even putting that aside, I find it to be a strange decision. Because Hiura starts dressing femininely for his crush, with this new translation the implication is now "hiura became trans to impress their (male) crush" which is... problematic to say the least. and in my opinion it does much more harm than good and only fuels negative stereotypes. I don't know what was going through the translators head but I think they should maybe take a look at the bigger picture.

Shame to see that happen. Whether if it's intended to add trans representation or meant to censor the original homosexual intention of the manga, it's a weird choice. Hope we don't get more of that. I love crossdressing manga.

Judging by the interpreter's explanation, she simply planned to turn it into a representation, taking advantage of the moment. But she did this without the knowledge of the author and publisher, and she also didn't take into account that many gay manga fans will perceive this as erasing gay men due to the belief that feminine gays are no longer considered men.

I ended up reading and returning an original, non-revised version of volume 1 to Amazon (UK) to get started on this series with the intent to replace it eventually. That was about 2 months ago. Has anyone actually seen a revised copy in the UK?

@Mei-o_Scarlett You fall into a double trap here, since Rose of Versailles was never a transsexual work and the trans reading goes against Oscar's concept as a character. This is precisely the fantasy that a woman can play a full-fledged male role in society.

But one way or another. What do these black bars mean?

@Mei-o_Scarlett Eh, I just find it sad that actual trans works remain obscure mangas for certain audiences while people are busy looking for a trans narrative in works that simply explore gender or even just feature androgynous characters. Reminds me of the joke that many shipping folder franchises are more popular than most real BL and yuri.

@Mei-o_Scarlett In the end it just leaves a bad aftertaste. Because this is an actual queer manga and there is nothing wrong with actual trans content. But for some reason the localizer needed to make a mess with this.

Rich coming from the same people who are fine with erasing heterosexuals and consume BL that shows how a straight MC can be converted to gay by harassing and raping him.

@Maou_heika This is usually a combination of two popular fantasies. About the seduction of a straight character into a gay relationship and agnsty violations of homophobic taboos. There used to be quite a lot of this in BL and Yuri, especially of a sexual nature. I completely accept it as a fetish, but it confuses me when many people who like it start complaining about the same fetishes, but in straight fiction.
