So after watching the movie I'm still unsure who she ends up with. Is it the beast or the childhood friend? It's not really clear at the end. To be honest I was hoping the beast. I felt like there was more of a connection between them than the othe other guy.

Don't think so, since the beast is younger than her, so I guess they'll have more of a big-sister-relationship.

Well, this is not a romance show. Realistically speaking, she may eventually end up with shinobu if romance was the topic. Beast was the just the guy whom she saved from parental abuse. Her connection with him was pretty platonic and based relating with each other due to their life problems.I hardly doubt they will meet again much in real life. Plus he is pretty young compared to her.

I was cheering for the beast, although the age difference. By the way, how old is she? I remember the beast being 14

This is not a romance show and what Belle did merely is saving the boy from his violent father. I don't get why there're still some people who have this silly question in mind.

Good question given that the movie is a beauty and the beast type story with a twist in the end

I think since the beast is so young and the way she saved him was kind ofa paralel to what her mother did, she woudnt fall for him, even though he likes her. They're bond will end up being a brother-sister kind of thing or something along those lines... She seemed to like the other guy though, the childhood friend.
I like that there is no big reveal of who ends up with her, but my guess would be the childhood friend, maybe, at some point

Well Suzu and the kid has more like a brother-sister relationship. He looks up to her and admire her but not in a romantic way. This movie is not a romance story to begin with but if it was then Suzu and Shinobu would be more plausible.

Suzu ends single and it is not a romance (and I think that's better, cause she needs a lot of healing, as well as Kei). However, she has a crush on her childhood friend, but it's not clear if he feels the same (looks like she is friendzoned by the end) and I think the main topic with this is how concepts as popularity can affect on teenager's minds.

If we go by the novel also written by Hosoda, Suzu feels something like love (and it's romantic LOVE = koi in japanese) for Shinobu and for the Beast at some point and she and Kei are described as lovers (koibito) when they touch their foreheads. But again, romantic love is not the main topic.

Kei is 14 and Suzu 17, by the way. Still a bit weird, but he is not a toddler (and she is still not an adult, even less by japanese standards). They have the same age difference as the main characters of Your Name.

EDIT: In the official Belle Guidebook Ryo Narita (Shinobu's seiyuu) says that Shinobu believes in Suzu, but he does not feel love for her yet. And Takeru Sato (Kei's seiyuu) comments that in his opinion Suzu and Kei don't share a romantic relationship, but a pure one (even if he as an interpreter likes Bell). So here you go.

no one, Belle isn't a romance story to begin with. But I wouldn't blame anyone who got confused by that, especially since the movie is inspired by beauty and the beast of all things. Heck, even I got confused before thinking deeply about the movie

I honestly didn't catch his age. He did seem young but I thought maybe a year younger at most. I watched it in sub and I can't always keep up with how quickly the dialogue happens at times.

It's an easy mistake if it's similar to the beauty and the beast.....

This movie kinda confused me in the romance aspect, like I thought it was a romantic movie but I don’t recall her ending up with anyone in the end. She didn’t have feelings for either of them I think.

Yep basically my stance as well. Shinobu did all the supporting for Suzu.

Should have just committed to the Shinobu confession since Suzu basically admits to the popular girl, Shinobu is the guy she likes. But then they just left it open ended as to like give hope for people to ship Kei and Suzu despite the age gap. I know this isn't a romance story but why do you even bother to add elements like Suzu admitting she likes Shinobu but don't follow through with it? Like it's obvious you're not expecting to write a sequel so why even tease it? Just don't write any romantic tones at all between Suzu and Shinobu then. Giving me a confession between two side characters who barely get any screen time at all is a strange choice to me. Like hooray Ruka and Kamishin? I saw you for maybe a total of 5 minutes in this movie. Congrats I guess?

This movie relatioships just felt weird and unfulfilling. I would much more prefer if the best was like the father still depressed from losing his wife and in a way would reconnect with the daugther. This random dude online made no sense.

At the very least, Suzu ends up with a dependable group of friends awaiting her return at Ino Station.

Invaluable for anyone dealing with the loss of their mother.

I think the beast ended up with belle because of the age difference. As you know there is a scene where suzu's friend named Hiroka (Hiro) had a wallpaper of their physic teacher that are 40 years old I think (old) so it's like an unrelated scene for us but it might want to show a hint of an age gap. Besides, the childhood friend is only treating suzu as a replacement mom, and Suzu is just confused with that treatment. Plus, I don't know if it translates wrong or just has a different meaning. The beast literally confesses face to face, forehead to forehead like bruhhh that closeee...... And they literally dance together in ( virtual )( i know but the U literally share with their real body right). I know suzu answer the confession with a thank you cause I think suzu wait for the beast to grow old ( he is 14) and Suzu is only 17 sooo 0nly 3 years. So yeah I'm on the beast side.

Well I wouldn’t say that their age difference was that big. He is 14, she’s probably around 17 which is only 3-4 years of difference. If it was the guy who would have been older, I guess no one would have had any problems because of this stereotypical thinking, that the guy always has to be older, stronger etc. Their love is platonic but they deeply care about each other and made a connection that she never had with that other, childhood guy. In my opinion, if there was second part where they would be older, they would deffinetely fall for each other. A little reminder, that Julliet was 13 and Romeo 17.

As you can observe in the movie, Its clear that Suzu likes Shinobu. She blushed when he held her hand, and while she chat with Luka, Luka told she likes Kami forgot his name, and said that Luka knew Suzu liked Shinobu. Suzu showed platonic love for Kei.

She stared liking her best friend in the first part of the movie. In the complete end or middle she started liking the beast instead of her best friend. Her best friend found out that she was belle in the complete middle of the movie. So Idk who she was going to be with in the end of the movie tbh.

I feel like it made sense because she wanted to know why her mom would sacrifice her life to save a kid she didn't know on the cost of her relationship with suzu, and in the end she does the same, like she goes far away to save someone she barely knows so I feel like that was the main point

To be honest midway through the movie there is a scene where the group of ladies Suzu sings with comment that she is in love and one of them gives the ultimate hidden spoiler for this movie...

The lady tells the story of how she went to study abroad on her senior high-school year (where she would have been around Suzu's age, 17) and that she was really interested in a guy that was always alone and even wrote a love song for him as his birthday present, he was happy for the gift and smiled as he said goodbye to her...They didn't date because he was in 8th grade (usually people are around 13-14 in 8th grade in japan, which we later find is Kei's age).

Looking back to it now it was a major spoiler on their age difference, and probably on the outcome of their relationship...not only age wise, but since they live so far apart (just like the lady and the boy she met while abroad) they probably said farewell to each other to never meet again...

The choir lady story was actually baiting Tomo to be the dragon. He’s 13, the common age of an 8th grader, presented as the weird kid who was a big defender of the dragon and he was even singing Belle’s song later in the movie.

I think Belle's romantic interest is the Beast. Shinobu was just like a guardian and friend to her, and he admitted it. Belle has a little crush on Shinobu because of the things (like he'll protect her) he said when they were 6 years old. But do you remember when the aunties said that Belle looks like she's in love? And that one auntie who fell in love offered a love song to an eighth grader? I think it's like a 'shade' (sorry, I don't know the right term) that—that will be the same way with Belle and Beast (As Belle offered a love song to him). Also, Beast told her he loves her at the end (where they met irl), like a reply.

Also, if you're thinking of Belle's blushing face at the end with Shinobu, I think she's just happy with what Shinobu said. As far as I remember, Belle didn't blush when Luka accidentally mentioned Shinobu's name when they were talking about their crushes. Thus, another point that suggests Belle is in love with the Beast is her heavy blushing face when the aunties teased her that she's in love—it is similar to Luka's heavy blushing face when she confessed to Kamirin.

I watched this movie 3 times, I still want to ship Suzuki and Kei even though Kei is younger... I was blushing with Kei and Suzu... This anime really makes me happy, I wish they make a series... My screen name Kazuka is unpopular name, i'll just imagine myself being with Kei... In this movie, Suzu was just like an older sister to Kei... At first, I thought they would end up together, but it's not, I wish they release part two... Suzu has no romance part in this anime movie, she just like Shinobu...

When ladies were talking about Suzu being inlove, the other lady said that she gave a present to the boy he like (A song), and Suzu did the same thing to the beast... Which I personally think that Suzu is growing on him, like Suzu is liking him...

But in this anime, Suzu likes Shinobu, which represent that she has no interest in Kei, she just want to help... Still in this anime, it didn't even tell who's Suzu gonna end up with...

And the part that missing in this movie is the "Romance", the beast is younger and Suzu is older (14/17) Kei is still 14-15 and Suzu is 17... Suzu just saved Kei from his abusing father...

@Starzen517 AGREE, it's not a romantic movie but hey! Ruma and Kamishin... Hello... It shows some of a little bit romance but, Suzu... Suzu has an interest with Shinobu but the thing is we didn't know if Shinobu likes her back...

I don't but, I don't care about age limit or story, it's just beauty (Suzu) and the beast (Kei)... I don't know but this movie has no romance interest... I don't know about people who shipping Suzu and Kei (I'm included)...
