I realized that I'm getting a lot of flak about this from the lens of an anime-only.

But still, more power to you, and most likely I would follow Season 2 coming out in Fall next year.

But still, for the start of the adaptation of the best VN of all time, this is a massive disappointment and could never reach the levels of the VN.

Let's gooooo, I'm super hyped, this adaptation was actually really good for me, despite the criticism of others, i quite liked it. Can't wait for the 2nd season, when the infamous scene happends and the aftermath of it.

It's better for them to at least try and continue the story (and ignore the haters, I always respect that) than drop MLA after the 12/5 arc. To me that's on the level of the way the 2021-23 Dune films are split (walking out of the cinema my question was "when does the plot kick in?" and MLA isn't too dissimilar in that the plot's only kicking in now).

Told people that it was always going to be a double cour but people didn't think so

Anyways I'm glad. Doesn't hold up to the VN but it's still the best muv luv anime we've gotten and I enjoyed it as someone that's a fan of the VNs

Some are saying that the pace they're doing this there might well end up being 3 seasons, or alternatively they'll make a movie out of the remaining plot after Sadogashima. Another evidence of this is how the manga adaptation has 17 volumes, and the end of the coup arc is only the end of volume 6.

Whether I can recommend this to somebody who hasn't read the original VN will depend on the quality of season 2. Though what I really hate about this adaptation is how they apparently strictly stick to the manga, which is like supplementary material for people who have already read the original. Shows a lack of sincerity when they are unwilling to even take a look at the real source material for most of the scenes.

Anyways, animeonlys can rest assured about how the second season will likely be much better than the first. The story elements that made Alternative a life-changing "kamige" haven't kicked in yet at all :) Season 2 will be a emotional rollercoaster as long as they have basic competency in the adaptation. Still will be a huge downgrade compared with the experience of actually reading the highest-rated VN of all time though.

The thing is that they aren't really following the manga either. The manga had additional scenes from the VN that shows the girls interaction among themselves. There's none of that here. I mean in the VN, we see things mainly from Takeru's perspective, so when it's not a VN, they could do quite a lot with things with the character interactions, but i suppose with limited amount of time & budget, they chose to go with infodumps.

This was kinda bound to happen from the start, they already showed the BETA in episode 1. It'd be pointless to show the BETA and end without them facing the BETA.

I think it kind of works as a complment to the visual novel as well. Like, the battles were good at least. Now that were purely in Muv Luv Alternative territory, I think they'll slow things down a bit as well. the show was half way decent when it wasn't rushing through the early moments of Alternative.

It mostly adapts the manga which explains the quick pacing. But yeah it's def good for vn fans, not so much for anime onlys lol.

Fwiw, even though it does not have a stellar reception in Japan, it is much more better than in the western fandom. I feel like here it's quite tainted by fans of the original that have very specific ideas for how the adaptation should look.

Yeah, you are right, the japanese audience matters the most but i doubt it was received that well, i think they are just trying to get some cash using the anime as an "ad" for the recent games they have been releasing lately.

Apparently the response from the Japanese fans to the anime are quite good. Maybe it's because they wanted to see the next part animated.
