wow this episode was quite strange, definitely had a way different vibe to all the others but it was still really nice nonetheless, lots of fanservice in this one and although i didnt get many of the references still found this pretty interesting.

Oh wow. I just bought a collection of Yoshiharu Tsuge’s gegika. But it contains none of the stories that influenced this episode.... Looks like I’m preordering “Red Flowers” for July!

The fanservice in this episode was great. The girls bathing scene and Bamba shirtless were great and Mai looked beautiful in Yukata.

3:00 Something for the Military Otaku (Type 16)

What a surreal episode (especially the surgery).

Even while bleeding to death she can't help but think that her blood is for Mai. True nature of a simp.

One Piece episode 914 & 915 & 1027 were a mistake and 957 brought the salvation - FMmatron

I think the episode title ("Bolt Style") is a play of words on "shaft and bolt" and the episode a nod to Studio Shaft's visual style (and notorious fan service), Sayonara Zetsubou-sensei in particular. And like that :D

ボルト - Bolt
式 - Formula, Style

EDIT: A friendly manga reading bird tweeted in my ear that theory is utter nonsense and the simple answer is this:

That was too dark and surreal an episode for me.

The whole episode was meant to be a homage to Tsuge Yoshihara's works. He was a comic writer who did dark sad surreal stories, so whether you're a fan of his works or not will impact on your enjoyment of this episode.

Jellyfish "bite" that does physical damage instead of poison?!
Is the translation correct, lol?

The translation is probably correct. The pierced artery and the episode as a whole is actually a reference to Screw Style, a manga written Yoshihara Tsuge, who is the person they mention this episode being an homage to.

I wondered if anyone would get the Yoshiharu Tsuge references here. I've never read any of its manga yet but I've been at an exposition dedicated to him at Angoulême festival last year so I wasn't that much lost. It really took me by surprise though, not the kind of reference you see everyday :D

Oshii revisiting the influences of his youth.

There's often a reason why obscure references remain obscure.

Damn I guess one of those people who's been familiar with Tsuge (both of them) before this episode so was a great thing to see an homage.

Bro what did I watch 😭
Schopenhauer was more pessimistic. He believed happiness was a fleeting illusion, dependent on desires that, once fulfilled, only lead to new ones. In The World as Will and Representation (1818), he writes:

“Life swings like a pendulum backward and forward between pain and boredom.”
