Ah, another murder case.

I have to say though, this show really taps into the characters' intellect and their ability to discover the hidden truths. Takuboku in particular has a lot of potential in his character. I'm hoping we get some different type of cases in the future though. The murder stuff is kinda interesting but hope to see more variety in this show.

Well alright then... this certainly wasn't the usual run-of-the-mill detective case here. Especially with this dressing. Loved how many versions could have been the truth and then the little added details changed all of those into something completely different.

But Ishikawa... er. It's like he's got a couple loose screws.

Also: so many familiar seiyuu from so many other anime...

With the scapegoat Kyousuke arrested from the murder incident last episode, the cast adds more detectives: Sakutarou, Kodou and Isamu to help Ishikawa in solving this case...with the many theories that the murder could've gone down (according to their own speculations).

To add to the confusion (but better conclusion), school students and (like Ishikawa) novel writer Ryuunosuke and Tarou join for the ride, providing their own theories as well (with evidence to back up...mostly Tarou since he's involved for the most part).

Turns out, it was nothing more than a long-distance relationship between the suicidal prostitute and Kyousuke, and the series of unfortunate events sealing the fate for the woman who had veered love for Kyousuke.

The truth of the matter, is that the truth isn't a one-off, but many elements combined together to make a lethal stand.

"Love makes the heart grow fonder" is the quote for this episode, concluding this case. Quite an analytical one indeed, with casual remarks.

The speculations were certainly amusing, but damn, the sudden reveal of the truth was a nasty hit in the feels.

Right now, I kinda hate Ishikawa. He already know the truth about Otoki's cause of death from the beginning yet he accused Kyousuke as the murderer. Imagine, Kyousuke had to spend a night or so in the prison cell because of something he didn't actually do! After what Kyousuke did for Ishikawa (lending him money, selling his books, etc.), this is his way of paying him?! It's quite absurd. It appears that their friendship is kinda shallow. Plus, the fact that he saw Otoki preparing to commit suicide, he could have interfere or prevent Otoki from doing so. I thought Ishikawa will protect Kyousuke no matter what due to his kindness, but it appears I was wrong.

So Otoki basically committed suicide, but it still does not explain why Kyousuke had to spend the night in jail. Ishikawa seems like the type of person who takes his relationships for granted.

So, she commited suicide? Because she was happy about him lending her his jacket? Don't know if I'm stupid or what, but I don't get it.
Honestly, for me, this episode didn't make much sense. Maybe with another episode to elaborate the background a little bit more.
I still have hope for this one thou, let's see if it's going to be a good one or a waste of time

So the words "In a grove" kept on appearing in the dialogue. I believe this is a reference to the short story of the same name (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/In_a_Grove). This story served as inspiration to the movie Rashomon.

Is their friendship really that shallow? That you would go to the extent of letting your friend be imprisoned for something he did not do? I would instantly cut my relationship off with Ishikawa if I were Kindaichi.

Btw, I'd love to hear Ono Kensho voiced another Akutagawa Ryuunosuke character but shame, he was given a different role.

Fucking wow. Fucking Ishikawa, fuck him. If I was Kindaichi, I'd fucking punch him. He's laughing after he framed his own friend over the suicide of an ill woman?

Kindaichi has helped him so much by selling his own belongings to pay for his rent and he repays him by sending him to prison for false charges? Bullshit. There was nothing cute or funny about that scene, him laughing like a psychopath.

Are we seriously going to ignore all the stuff that happened in this episode and just return to the status quo?

How did Kindaichi forgave Ishikawa after what he did to him? After literally backstabbing him that bad? After everything Kindaichi did for him, like selling his books and lending him money so many times (in just two episodes).

I seriously thought that in the end both of them would've been involved in a bigger plan to take the real culprit. But nope, Ishikawa blamed his (supposedly) best friend for murder just because the latter didn't wanted to fuck some random whore.

Like, I don't know if I dislike more Ishikawa for doing something like that or Kindaichi for forgiving him so easily instead of getting him out of his life.

Wait what? That's unexpectedly dark, I feel so bad for Otaki. Ishikawa could do better in so many ways. First of all, he could actually TELL Kindaichi about her feelings (that way Kindaichi and Otaki could meet a long time ago btw), but no, he decided to wait until Kindaichi fucks up and blame it all on him being virgin. And yeah, like people said, he could take responsibilty and stop her from committing suicide (I believe it's fully his responsibility, because Otaki asked HIM to help her and Kindaichi to meet). I'm not even talking about him getting Kindaichi in a jail. Oh man, at least Ishikawa didn't tell him anything afterwards. As kind of a person as Kindaichi is, he would blame himself forever if he knew the truth.
Well, I guess, Ishikawa will be this kind of a character throughout the series. Egoistic and manipulative, but still very dear to Kindaichi until the end somehow. I feel bad for Kindaichi but I'm interested in their relationship so far.

P. S. Lol'd a bit at Akutagawa, love his books but his character here is more of a joke than anything else.

This episode was really sad :'( What a tragic story for Otaki. Didn't expected that was the meaning for all her actions and Kindaichi still being clueless. Damn!
P.S. Last episode, I hated Ishikawa for what he has done to Kindaichi but I knew there was a reason for. But I don't know who's right anymore. I pity Otaki. I understand what Ishikawa felt too, that he hated Kindaichi but..

Yeah, I think you're stupid. This episode was easy to understand though and I loved it but it was so tragic. And did you even heard what Tarou said? "Frustration, joy, despair, these emotions had their way with Otaki-san".. that's why she committed suicide. She was longing for Kindaichi, waiting for years for him to show up and when she finally decided to see him she must've misunderstood the relationship about Kindaichi and Ishikawa.. like maybe they're lovers? y'know the part when Tarou saw her at the door and runaway. Because she heard "Kindaichi's habit of speaking FEMININELY when agitated."

Okay, so you liked the episode hahaha that's fine. I understood everything, that was a retorical question, but thanks for answering it haha.
For me, it was to rushed. Maybe they could have shown a scene or two about Otaki's past, to relate a little bit more with her and her story. I don't know, for me, again, FOR ME, so you don't misunderstand me, it wasn't a good episode, but I have high hopes for this anime and I'll keep watching

Wait, Kindaichi wrote "My dream came through. Thank you." in Ishikawa's diary when he got out of prison. So does that mean that Kindaichi found love in that prison cell overnight?
...but then again, I unironically like Warau Salesman.

Hard agree. Good god, that was crap. But I suppose since Ishikawa's the protagonist he's gonna get away with all that, still keep Kindaichi's loyalty and everybody's respect as a "master detective" when he's really a manipulative ungrateful a-hole with no moral integrity whatsoever. Hell, there's no guarantee that he'd even have helped Kindaichi out if Tarou hadn't stepped in and exposed him. He would have sent his so-called best friend to prison for the "great crime" of being a virgin and not wanting to sleep with prostitutes!? If any character other than the protagonist had done that kind of thing they'd be in the doghouse for the entire rest of the show.

I'm still gonna keep watching since this is a pretty unique take on detective fiction, but nothing Ishikawa does or says from here on out will ever redeem him in my eyes. (Wonder if the real person had a reputation for being a selfish jerk, too. If not, I feel bad about the slandering of the author's name!)

It wasn't Kindaichi who wrote that. It was Otaki.

I don't understand how they could've shown more of Otaki's past when they barely knew her. Ishikawa and Tarou were the only ones who saw her intentions, and even they saw only glimpses of her so all they could do was guess. Also the most important things about her were already revealed, so what would a pointless backstory improve? She was a dying woman who did everything to meet with her loved one once. If that isn't enough for you to feel bad for her then the problem lies in you.

lol reading the comments in this thread made me realize most people watching this anime don't comprehend all of the subtleties

mmm, not that satisfied with how it ended, the conclusion was revealed really quick and i dont understand her thought process through things. she wanted him to fuck her and the only way was by becoming a prostitute? wow.

This show feels so... scattered?
It is so hard to follow the story. I hope next episode makes a bit more sense, because for now I can't tell what kind of show this is trying to be, what direction it's trying to go.
Is it a detective show or a slice of life thing? Does it matter?

What the hell was this episode? Why not tell Kindaichi in the first place? Poor girl killed herself because she was hopelessly in love with him. Needless death. For a master detective, Ishikawa sure is an idiot. And possibly someone who has no regard for human life. And so much for the main duo being friends lol.

Bad writing on many levels.

I'm supposed to feel bad that Ishikawa dies later? His actions were what triggered the series of events that led to the prostitute's death in the first place, and he has the nerve to blame his friend.

I can't find myself liking these characters, and I don't want to leave a negative review every episode since that is annoying for people who do enjoy this. So, I guess I am going to drop this now.

Quite a lot of detectives and novel writers we got there, and also quite a lot of possible theories of what could have happened leading up to Otaki's death
I changed my opinion on Ishikawa, it's pretty shitty to frame your innocent friend and I also wonder why he didn't stop Otaki when he witnessed her in her last moments or even bother to tell Kindachi that Otaki liked him in the first place.
I also find it kind of vague why she committed suicide but must be related to her misunderstanding Kindaichi's feelings for her

So let me see if i understood... Ishikawa actions began the whole chain of event that lead to Otaki suicide, he saw everything, got upset Kindaichi his (supposed) best friend didn't get laid with Otaki and decided to blame him....

Excuse me what?

Why not tell kindaichi in first place about Otaki lol
Why Otaki had to work as a prostitute?

wtf writers were thinking on this???

At least we got a literary reference this episode...though it was played for laughs. I feel they could have definitely done a better job reference In a Grove. (There was also the reference to I am a Cat, again played for laughs.)

Unless Ishikawa had an unrequited love for Otaki but she did not reciprocate him due to her love for Kindaichi is the only way I see this situation happened, otherwise this is just, to put simply backstabbing.
I cannot bring myself to rate anime that I have completed below 5. Well, it just because I have use up my precious time to watch it. so, the worse you will get from me is 5 (changes may apply)

Is Ishikawa going to redeem himself at some point or is he going to keep being a self-obsessed little sh**?? I can't stand his character and tbh I also can't stand Kyosuke for keep being friends with and tolerating this guy :/ I'm curious if the writers intended for us to like this character and think he's cool??? Cause I sure don't even going into ep4

Jesus, this episode really made Ishikawa look like a prick on another level! How could he do that to Kindaichi?! If anything, I’d say most of the blame for Otaki’s suicide rests on Ishikawa!

One thing I’m not clear on… when and how did Otaki fall in love with Kindaichi? I get that it was in Hokkaido but not much more than that
