Off to a good start... jumping straight into the first battle with meaning.

I do love me some space ship explosions.

I wonder how much already having seen the old one will affect my enjoyment of this "new" one... (4/10 for the old one because it's so slow and long)

Reinhard realized what I already knew was going to happen. Priceless.

This version was hype, PV looked worse. Yeah the character design suck a bit however one of the things the old LotGH lacked was action and this one has plenty of it for now and gives more explanations on why the tactic works so hopefully they will patch some of the plot holes of the original.

Honestly, not as bad as I was expecting. Hell, it's not even bad.

Was dreading Mamoru Miyano as Reinhard considering that Miyano primarily deals in pure ham, but he actually kept it surprisingly understated and sounded the part. Most of the cast seemed quite well fit, the only exception being Kircheis who sounded perhaps a tad too broody for a character as generally earnest as him. But then, it wasn't so bad as to be distracting.

CG is better than might have expected, although the mere presence of CG animation is bad in of itself (at what point did we, as a community, start to consider the presence of any 3DCG in a 2D anime acceptable?), and the mechanical design is quite good (the Brunhilde especially looks spot-on). However, the battle scenes themselves seem cluttered and unfocused, like a mess of ships and lasers.

Only thing that's flat-out awful are the character designs, but that's been discussed to death already. Still, I can't help but find it analogous to having Tetsuya Nomura or someone equally unfitting design an anime adaptation of A Song of Ice and Fire. Additionally I feel a strength of the original was its character design, which made each character surprisingly distinct and instantly identifiable, which was important in a show with a mind-boggling number of characters. Meanwhile the current designs have a severe case of "Only Six Faces". This wasn't so bad this episode but I forsee this being a huge problem down the line.

They mostly got the tone right as well, so points there. Wasn't overly bombastic like I suspected it would be, kept things calm and methodical, much like both the original and the source material. My only concern is the lack of narration. Admittedly it was used to an excessive degree in the first adaptation, but the quality of the narration (both in writing and voice acting) was excellent enough to void any complaints about it, and it was tremendously important to lending the actions of characters the weight they did, as well as establishing the ripped-from-the-history-textbooks tone that was such an integral part of both the novel and OVA versions. Without it, I feel LotGH has lost a big part of its charm, and seems to be going down more of a generically anime writing style. Not that this is necessarily a bad thing, but I don't feel like it has much hope of living up to its legacy.

That said, judged in a vacuum with no context, this is pretty solid.

I decided to do a first (somewhat) watch of both and I guess honestly I will admit there is a slight more distinction in some of the characters but I think its a little overblown regarding complaints mainly directed that its fushoji bait when the original has that aspect as well just 80's bait. I will admit most of the older designs I think would be better than newer if upgraded in HD but honestly I like Reinhard's look and most of the Imperial characters in the new one better and I feel inversely about the Free Planets designs I think the old ones are better.

The action and CGI battles I like in the new version I get the commitment to drawn (I tend to prefer drawn myself and I usually am fearful of CGI) but honestly I think the new one has just flat out superior battle scenes though I liked that the original went back and forth between each side though I guess in the next episode they will cover Yang. Honestly after watching both I like them equally.

I actually tried watching LOTGH a long time ago seemed right up my alley especially being into military history as a hobby (Belisarius FTW) and liked the SW EU and 40K I never hated it but never continued on I have been meaning to get back into it but the overall episode count was intimidating. After seeing the first episode of the new one and the original honestly I am now really really confused why I didn't keep watching cause it was a lot better than I remembered though.

I think a lot of old fans just need to consider regardless if the adaptation isn't for the best at the very least I think it will bring new fans or people like me who didn't get into it initially back into the original and really truly appreciate it. I really don't buy that it is slaughtering the original. Plus its just a remake not a continuation you still will always have the original and maybe it will get more popularity as a result. At the very least this show coming out this season spurred me to finally attempt to watch all 110 episodes of the original and maybe find another new favourite. I have been enjoying both thus far.

Plus side of this I can just keep watching the original while I wait for the new episodes (once I finish exams here). Somewhat I hope we can more intergalactic space opera's in anime in the future that don't involve mecha (I don't hate mecha but it tends to control this setting a little too much).

Not bad for the first episode, but i think that their enemy was way too stupid and confident. It seemed like they weren't even shooting or had their shields operational, only if they jammed their communications 3 times.
I wonder what that other captain will do now.
Oh, and btw, the OP seems pretty good.

This is so exciting!! I'm a huge fan of the original, so even if they give us the short version of the story in this remake, I'm still so happy to see it return. Plus the animation is beautiful! Great first episode!

This episode that you remember, is very similar to the first episode of the past series of LOGH. As a beginning it is interesting, but not compelling because of the slow narrative rhythm, but already we see the political implications and military strategies in the narration. The graphic quality is really high, I like the design style and the soundtrack, despite the fact that they are affected by the past.

Having watched the OVA, i think it is pretty decent so far. The story is very big and detailed so it will take some time for folks to get used to it. As far as i remember, i got bored at the first couple of episodes of old series but then it was very interesting and i couldn't get enough. It is "War And Peace" of anime.

Wow, this was madly fun.

Tbh, I went and tried the OVA before but couldn't get into it.

This one is easy to follow. The battles are great. I don't understand why the character designs are unaccepted tho - they're also pretty to look at imo, just like the old ones.
Ah, and the choice of voice actors is perfect. Excellent voice acting.

I'm definitely sticking to this new LOGH.

Better than I expected for sure. xD

Would still sit through the original though, it has a certain charm that this modern version kind of lacks lol.

An intriguing premise.

I have to admit, battles of such magnitude blow me away, it is hard to fathom space battles of fleets over a thousand ships strong. A strategic overview of the situation is certainly appropriate.

I look forward to seeing intricate stratagems unfold.

Wow. I didn't have many expectations going in, but I loved it. It certainly changed a lot from the original OVA, but this is a re-adaptation of the NOVELS not a remake of the OVA, so I don't think it should be. Where the old series is beautiful, this is more epic. Not saying that there are not instances of vice versa however. Anyway, I don't comment on much but I will be keeping up with and commenting on this. It looks like it will be at least an 8 for me, perhaps because of how big of a fan of the series I am.

i liked the designs of the character so far... except for Farenheit who looked (and sounded) much cooler in the ova, Brunhilde looks more glorious than ever

Oh boy that sure was intense for a first episode! And well I do must say it's been a long time since I've seen the original and I surely was amazed they would compile a +100 episode anime into a 12 episode anime, but I do think I understand how they'll play it out!

So I definitely am looking forwards to see what this re-visitation of Ginga Eiyuu Densetsu will have to offer!

Not sure what to think of this one, it looks quite amusing and the sense of scale is ever present. Am I a fan of the audiovisuals? Yes, but the series does not have the same vibe or ethos. The music is rather good, but the classical feel is gone due to there not being any classical music here. Reinhard's design is not so great, even though I am fine with the series so far. The ending with Yang was anticlimatic and good though, so that is a plus. I dislike Kercheis' design in this series, I much prefer his old design from the original OVA. There really isn't much else I could say since we have barely seen any semblance of a plot or character interactions. The interactions between Reinhard and Kercheis feel more dynamic and natural in the old series as opposed to this one, which feels a bit like Koruko no Basket and less like Legend of the Galactic Heroes. So far it is fine, but I prefer the movie (My Conquest) as an introduction.

Finally giving this adaptation a chance. The first episode has a flare for the dramatic which immediately changes the tonality of the show. The interaction between characters feel more anime like than in the OVA. Instead of slow winding intrigue we have tension and then immediate payoff through the dialogue which is probably done on purpose to capture a wider audience.

Character designs are more attuned to this decades sensibilities of what anime is viewed as, hardly an issue. The music also suites the show even if it may not bring the heights of the classical music used in the OVA. I am also glad to see that CG in anime is slowly but surely improving as time passes. This series is a good example of more than tolerable CG.

This was better than I was expecting and I look forward to the rest of the episodes since this series only seems to be covering the first of the ten novels and the upcoming movies will be adapting further than that. If the quality is consistent throughout I could easily see myself recommending this first over the original OVA as an introduction to the franchise.

I came into this with an open mind. I really did. I hated the original. Now I know it's not just the slow pace. This episode sought to establish the genius of Reinhardt and Wengli. To me, all it did was cement both their incompetence.

1) The narrator first established that the Galactic Empire and Free Planets Alliance has been in perpetual war. One would imagine that in order for this to happen, both sides must be well aware of each other's technologies. It would then be unthinkable that one side would allow their "data links" to be jammed up, rendering the entire fleet ineffectual, including the shields of its own ships, while leaving the enemy's communications completely unharmed.

2) The Galactic Empire seems devoid of any semblance of a chain of command. I know, like most other anime, it wants to establish those pesky "adults" as weak and incompetent, while the idealistic 16 year old high school students take over. One would imagine, though, that a competent commander would find competent subjects and fire incompetent ones. So there are several possible situations here (no spoilers). One: The Galactic Empire has uniformly incompetent officers. Two: The Galactic Empire doesn't value the opinions of their competent officers. Three: Reinhardt was promoted yesterday from being a nobody. The last one would explain why none of the lower ranks respected his opinion, but it wouldn't explain why he doesn't theirs. Most likely, the first one is true, which actually means he didn't manage his affairs correctly prior to showing off his supposed talent.

3) The silver-haired guy says "a win is a win". Anyone who has played any kind of game knows that a win is not a win, that there is something called "expected value" that takes into account the chance of winning and losing. If someone hits the lottery with an EV of 0.01, it means that if he had played the lottery a million times, on average, he should expect to win only a thousand dollars. That he wins on a fluke still makes it a very bad decision.

4) One should expect that even prior to Reinhardt's offense, a competent officer should still be able to monitor the conditions on the field. Certainly, Reinhardt has that fancy looking monitor. It would be reasonable to assume that the Free Planet Alliance also has that capability. So if Wengli really was all that competent, how did he allow the offense to take out 1.5 other units before he did anything? Was he just waiting to take command, twiddling his thumbs, so he could take credit for the win? If that's the case, even if he is a brilliant tactician, he would be an incompetent strategist and an uncommitted patriot. If not, it's unthinkable that both the other fleets would not listen to the opinion of their second in command.

Basically, the whole battle was contrived. At least Code Geass had some somewhat interesting high school drama. Here, we just get Lelouch's "chess" match -- something that makes no sense but gets presented to us as impressive.

4/10 for the CGI. The original was 3/10.

i'm surprised at the cgi. i know it's cg, but cg just is becoming so... seamless. i have no idea what or how i should feel about this. more and more animation studios are opting to use cg because of the big improvements and of course, costs. but it still doesn't sit right with me sometimes, due to how... how do you explain it. it's like i'm watching a mechanical robot move. and as you can probably tell from my tone, meh. i will say though. reinhardt and kircheis in modern animation is 👌👌 i prefer this part.

I WAS GOING TO SAY!!! well, not that i was gonna say *anything* about this but i was thinking the same thing. wow. i was shocked, i was like bro so kircheis is this the enemy's so-called "brilliant" other half of reinhardt you were jinxing? because he just let all those people and tens of thousands of ships get destroyed before he waltzed into the picture. surely he could have had much better results if he had just replaced that "i'm not a pansy" commander in the first place, who was by the way, enjoying a fine dinner * while he was letting his squadrons lose the fight.
*right?

I'm watching this because the original anime seemed far to long. I'm impressed I expected that an adaption of a cherished classic space opera would turn out well and I wasn't wrong.

Somehow the rivalry between the two opposing commanders may establish the tone of the show moving forward. I can't wait to seem how this turns out.

In plenty of ways this show reminds me of the epic scale of Battleship Yamato.

No, this isn't like some huge branched out franchise, this is just a remake. You can watch it independently.

Not sure why you'd want to watch this one instead of the original, but yeah, you can do that.

First thing I thought when I saw Staden: SUCCUMBS TO THEORY!!!

I couldn't stop grinning the entire time. Miyano Mamoru as Reinhard, the tear jerking OP. I wasn't sure how to feel about a remake of the greatest space opera to exist, but I'm all in for what I've seen so far.

Even though it's been five years since I watched the original, this series has remained timeless and forever memorable.

So I come straight from the Gaiden and... Man! I really liked this!
The animation just blew me away, really!

The downside... Well, I just wish they would have made the characters look closer to the OVA ones. The redesign for me is a bit off... a bit generic and ikemen-like to be LoGH.

I'm gonna have to get used to the new voices (although there are some pretty big names on here!). I like Mamo and I think he's good but I didn't feel the pride and authority that Horikawa made me feel when listening to Reinhard.
But then again, it's just the first episode, so I need to watch more.

I love the fact that the narrator has the same voice. I was hoping they would also keep Kei Ogura for the EDs but sadly they didn't (Although I liked the OP and ED, nevertheless).

Really excited!
